Joyce Field

The August and September 2005 reports for the Yizkor Book Project
have been combined. As you all know, our servers were down as a
result of Hurricane Rita, a situation which naturally affected our
ability to receive and work on new translations during the end of
September.

All translations can be accessed through the alphabetical listings at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/translations.html. New translations
are flagged for a month to make it easy for you to identify them.
However, we have flagged both August and September additions this
time.

We are looking for additional English translations of yizkor books to
put online. If you are interested in coordinating a translation
project, please contact me privately. You will join a distinguished
group of coordinators who have contributed to the Yizkor Book Project
and you will make these precious books available to researchers
worldwide who are not able to read these books in their original
languages.

Please also consider making a donation to the yizkor book translation
projects listed at
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23.
Your contribution will help pay for the translation of these books,
making their information available to all researchers.

Our sincere wishes to all for a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

Viewmate 6898 and 6899, Union Field Cemetery Queens, NY #general

RENEEP8546@...

Dear Genners,
About a month and a half ago, I went to the Union Field Cemetery to
look for my great-grandfather's grave. It was in the section of the
Congregation Sharis Adath Israel Menhag Sfard, row 3 grave 5. I got
turned around and ended up looking for it in row 5. I took pictures of
some graves but could not read them. I have put them on Viewmate for a
translation and for anyone who might be looking for these names.
Please go to: http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html , Viewmate
6898 and 6899 to see them. One picture, I realize, is lopsided.
Please respond privately.
Thanking you in advance,

Dear Genners,
I posted a jpg to the Viewmate site, the direct url is...

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=6902

It is a close-up of two columns >from a Hamburg departure.
The two words are in columns marked "Previous Residence" and "State or
Province".
I think the second column, "State or Province" means Russia.
Can anyone venture a guess what the city or "Previous Residence" could be?

Please reply directly to me, by email.

United Grodner Relief, 1960 (ViewMate photo) #general

Paul Gordon <flash@...>

I've posted a photo on ViewMate of my great-grandfather Sam SCHNEIDER
with an unidentified woman. The photo was taken in New York in 1960, at
a party given by United Grodner Relief in honor of his 80th birthday.

Sam SCHNEIDER was born in the city of Grodno. I'm curious who the woman
with him in the photograph is. Perhaps she was also >from Grodno.

If you have relatives >from Grodno who were in New York in the late 1950s
- early 1960s, could you please take a look at this photo? It is
ViewMate file # 6886. You can link to it directly at

You can access all the ViewMate files at

Please send any responses to me, and not to the entire group. As
always, thanks for your help.

JewishGen servers safe and back in business #latvia

Elsebeth Paikin

Dear all,

I am sure that we have all missed JewishGen while the server
was being brought to safety when hurricane Rita approaced
Houston and then - after Rita had passed - back to Houston.

This will just remind us all of what the world would be
without JewishGen. What an ansolutely dreadful thought!

I therefore first of all want to thank to all those behind the
scenes that took precautions and made sure that the server was
evacuated in time. I am quite sure that it must have meant a
lot of extra work for all involved.

Second I would suggest that we all donate an amount - small or
large - to JewishGen, in gratitude and to compensate for the
expenses of evacuation. I don't know - but I am sure that it must
have cost quite a lot. I myself have just send a donation via
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/

Last but not least I hope and pray that those JewishGenners whose
homes were in Rita's path are all well and that no or not much
damage was done to their homes.

Best wishes
