There was a wonderful movie some decades ago, "I love you Rosa" based on a
true story in the Sefardic commumity of Jerusalem at the turn of the
century.

The custom of marrying the widow of your brother who had
not produced a child was alive and well in Nezhin Ukraine (a town
under significant Lubovicher influence) through World War I. These
marriages do not appear specifically noted in the marriage records,
but they are specified in the divorce records when the parties part.

"Black Bread Disease" #general

CharlesPottins

Regarding the query about "Black Bread Disease", I could not find this term
on the internet, but I would hazard a guess that it might have been referring
to a form of ergot, a fungal infection which particularly affects rye flour,
and hence black bread, under some conditions.
The chemicals it produces cause intoxication, illness, a burning sensation
in the limbs(St.Anthony's Fire) and often convulsions (hence St.Vitus Dance)
among humans who unwittingly consume the contaminated bread.
In the past there were major outbreaks in places in Europe, the most recent
known being at Pont St.Esprit in southern France, in August 1951, when 300
people were effected who had all eaten bread >from the same batch.
If the convulsions were severe enough that could be the cause of death.
