JewishGen Website Technical Difficulties #unitedkingdom

Louise Messik <louise@...>

Lorna Kay very kindly drew our attention to the fact that the JewishGen
website, together with its satellite pages, is experiencing technical
difficulties.

The problem is reported together with updates on the JewishGen blog at
http://jewishgen.blogspot.com. Apparently the difficulty has now been
resolved as you will see >from their latest report.

I'm sorry I made a mistake in the street name for CHAZONOWSKY on Hope
Street. It's 30, not 10. Someone was kind enough to send me the Census image for
Hope Street, so it does exist, in ED 295. I've asked for the rest of the
street, so I don't think I need any more responses about it unless anyone has
CHATZANSKY, CHECANSKY, or CHAZONOWSKY relatives >from Kiev.

Website down? #unitedkingdom

Lorna Kay <lorna.kay@...>

The JewishGen website has been down on a couple of occasions lately, which
also means there is no access to JCR-UK. Is there a problem with the
website? At our workshop this afternoon, four or five members
complained about this and have asked for clarification.

If anyone has any answers, a response would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: query regarding names: same person? #general

<< do you think these two names are the same person? They are
the fathers of two men, written on separate gravestones in
different cemeteries -
Wolf: died 23 July 1959 - son of Rabbi Shiya Aziel
Jacob: died 1929 age 79- son of Yeshaya Ezial

==It's taken me a little while to straighten things out. I guess your
question is "could Rabbi Shiya Aziel and Yeshaya Ezial be one
and the same?"

Yes, they could, Depends on the Hebrew spelling. Yeshaya, also
Yeshayahu, is a Hebrew name >from the Bible (the prophet Isaiah).
It is frequently shortened into Shaye by Yiddish speakers. Caution:
the name Sheya is a shortening of the Hebrew name Yehoshua
(Joshua), an entirely different name.

There is a Hebrew Name Azri-el which could also be Ezri-el. Both
mean "God is my help." The first letter in each is an `ayin.
There is a name Uzi-el, which means "God is my strength" also
with an initial `ayin; it could possibly be Ozi-el, which has the same
meaning and also starts with an `ayin..

Ezial does not look to me like a Hebrew name; I assume it's a misspelling
for Uziel or Azriel. The problem boils down to whether Shiya and Yeshaya
are the same person (definitely could be), and whether Aziel and Ezial
are the same, to which the answer is that they are both misspellings.
(Are Aflerd and Adrelf the same person?) What you will need to do is to
check the Hebrew spellings of those two names. They are probably in
Hebrew on their respective tombstones.

Are Wolf and Jacob brothers? Jacob was born 1850: Wolf died
1959, 109 years later. Not much chance that they are brothers. There
is a high possibility that the father of one was named after his father
and the father of the other was named after the same person who was
his grandfather.

Don't let the Rabbi title put you on the wrong track. It was probably an.
honorific "Reb"--the equivalent of "Mr."

STEINBERGS, STERNBERGS #unitedkingdom

Hilary Osofsky

After getting nowhere fast with my Manchester, England / Russian Jacob
Steinberg family, I just discovered that the family name had originally been
Sternberg, and that the name of this branch was probably changed somewhere in the
English census-taking process. Perhaps this new information might strike a
chord with someone.

Jacob had a brother, Judite (aka Juda), whose son, Shmuel Sternberg, lived
with his uncle, Jacob, and married Fanny Cohen in 1913. Louis Sax served as
the groom's witness. There might also have been a brother, Joseph Sternberg.

As a quick refresher, Jacob and Betsy Steinberg/Sternberg had children
Amelia, Simon, Solomon, Morris, Isaac and Nathan. The family lived in the Red Bank
and Cheetham areas of Manchester. They were related to Joseph and Hannah
Stein, children Jane, Jacob, Israel, Isaac, Harry, Louis, Abraham. Their
daughter Yetta (Ettie) married Caspar Edelson. Their other cousins were Joseph
Samuel and Lena Sax Harrison, son David, Solomon Harrison, daughter Dora, and
Pauline and Ellis Taylor.

We would love to find the Sternbergs, >from whom we have been cut off for
nearly a century. We would appreciate any help the genners could provide.

With reference to item 2.

Dear Yohanan Loeffler

My mother's family named RIEGLER lived in Lackenbach until 1938. My
mother's sister is still alive and living in Detroit. If you can E-mail
me copies of the photographs I can send them to her to see if she can
identify anybody for you.

In addition, I would be very interested to see if I can identify any
members of my family. This year, in July, I visited Lackenbach and met
neighbours of my mother >from the same street. I also visited the site of
the synagogue which was destroyed by the Nazi's. There is a small
inscribed stone monument to commemorate the building. In addition there
is a large Jewish cemetery in the town.
