1907 street address for Grodno, Russia #general

Jill Williams <jill_64@...>

Hi
I've posted part of a Hamburg ship manifest >from 1907 on ViewMate. It says that the
passengers (Schmul & Rochel Chaschkes) were >from Grodno, Russia, and that Schmul's
mom, Malka Chaskes, lived at a specific address. The address looks like Grodno,
Russia, Gzortkessz 15. Is this address in the city of Hrodna? Does this street
address still exist and how is it spelled today? (I want to look it up on a map.)
If this address is >from Hrodna then perhaps my relatives lived there before
emigrating.

It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=21173 Please respond via
the form provided in the ViewMate application.
Thank you very much.

Rabbi Boruch EISENMAN from Minsk #rabbinic

anna835@...

I am looking for information about my ancestor, Rabbi Boruch EISENMAN.
He lived in Babryusk, Minsk, in Belarus, circa 1840-1890. He then went
to Ekaterinoslav (now Dnepropetrovsk) in Ukraine. His last name has
also been spelled on various documents as EISMAN, AIZENMAN, AISENMAN.
Have been informed he was a well-known rabbi in both Russia and the U.S
(>from 1910-1931). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

R' Yisrael ben R yosef-of Ostraha #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Someone sent me a few years ago two pages >from the book "Mazkeret
ligdolei Ostraha"(by Menachem Biber) and on pp. 222 and 277 appear the
names of a R' Yisrael ben Harav Yosef derhabitscher , both having
served and lived in Ostraha some 200+ years ago. The author of the
book presumes that the two were the same individual.

Both individuals came to zfat (Eretz yisrael/Palestine during the 19th
centuries)

I've posted in the past my research on an ancestor with the name and
place and can only presume that whoever sent me the pages knew of my
research. The names and places where he/they lived are very similiar
to my ancestor.

Is anyone on this list related to this/these Ysrael ben Yosef who can
shed more light on them/him?

Could be either of the following:

1 Rabbi Gedalyo Aharon of Linits (5575 - 5638; 1815-1878) was a
rebbe who lived in Sokolivka >from 1852 to 1868
2 Rabbi Pinchos of Sokolivka (son of 1) (5602 - 5679) was rabbi of
Sokolivka for 40 years

In addition there is Rabbi Boruch (Frenkl-Teomim) of Sokolivka,
who lived late 1800s early 1900s.

Help deciphering Ketubah #sephardic

Michael Waas

Hi,

Happy New Year! I came across a Ketubah in the Jewish National
Library's online database. It appears that the second witness to the
marriage in 1717 in Reggio Emilia in Italy was a man named Avraham
Berachia Rabi, son of Yehuda. However, the image is not the best
quality and it's tough to tell. If someone can help decipher it, it
would be a big help. It would potentially be the first evidence of my
mother's family name in Northern Italy beyond the fragmentary
documentary record in Turkey.

Yizkor Book Project, December 2011 #ciechanow #poland

Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

Shalom,

With 2011 having flown past and 2012 on our doorstep, it's time to look back
at what we have achieved over the past year and look forward to even better
in the coming year. Apart >from the continued satisfaction I receive in
seeing the translations appear online, I am particularly moved by the teams
of people, literally >from all corners of the planet, who are behind these
translations and make these projects a reality. I would like to thank the
many, many volunteers who have made this all happen and hope to be in
contact with them in 2012 and see more or more people join our ranks.

During December, the last translations to be prepared for the Pinkas Lita
[Encyclopedia of Jewish communities, Lithuania] book went online and, once
again, I salute the amazing Shaul Yannai and Shimon Joffe for the mammoth
amount of work that went into all their hundreds of translations >from this
book. There are a number of articles of communities that weren't translated
and these will be added in the near future as expanded articles >from the
"Litvak Heritage" series that were kindly donated by Joel Alpert and Josef
Rosin.

I would like note the very generous contribution of Robin O'Neil, who in
addition to other research documents appearing in the Yizkor Book Project,
has submitted the entire, mind-provoking, "Rabka Four - Instruments of
Genocide and Grand Larceny" document, the first sections of which were added
online in December and will appear in its entirety within the next few
months.

This month the Zawiercie, Poland Yizkor Book was set up as a Translations
Fund and we're looking forward to seeing this project grow as funds come in.
Note that a very positive way of helping to see translations placed online
is by supporting this project or one of the many Translation Funds which
have been set up to bring about the professional translation of the Yizkor
books. If you feel able to support this effort, please go to the Yizkor
Book JewishGen-erosity page:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23
to learn about the Translation Funds currently underway.

The Yizkor-Books-In-Print Project continues to gain momentum and is now
looking to compile a list volunteers who have access to libraries with
Yizkor book collections and are willing borrow a specific Yizkor book and
scan images for inclusion in the printed translation of these books. If you
have access to a library with Yizkor books and are willing to help out here,
please contact Joel Alpert whose contact information can be found at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/ybip.html

As far as the November figures go, during this last month we have added
these 4 new projects:

- Dillingen and Nalbach, Germany (The History of the Former
Synagogue-Communities of Dillingen and Nalbach)

Yizkor Book Project, December 2011 #dna

DNA Research #DNA Yizkor Book Project, December 2011 #dna

Danzig/Gedansk SIG #Danzig #Gdansk #Germany #Poland Yizkor Book Project, December 2011 #poland #danzig #gdansk #germany

Synagogue-Communities of Dillingen and Nalbach)

Wiltz = Dvinsk #general

Marc&Carine Ryszfeld <marcrys@...>

Dear all,
After confronting multiple sources, I have reasons to believe that the city of
Wiltz (Vidz) that appear in French civil documents for my CHAYETTE/CHAIT family is
actually the city of Dvinsk. I had never come across this pronunciation/spelling
before. So 1st, would anyone have come across such spelling for Dvinsk? And 2nd
would it make sense to have it added to the various spellings of Dvinsk in
JewihsgGen' ShtetlSeeker for future researchers looking for Wiltz (although the
mere presence of this message in the SIG archive is enough for that matter)
Happy Healthy and fruitful New Year.
