Dear Genners,
My grandmother emigrated to New York in 1921 >from Dubno, where my
mother and her sisters were born. In many years of searching, I have
been unable to find any records whatsoever for the family, even under
alternate spellings of the family name, BUNIS. I have discovered other
Bunises, but none of the given names or dates match. I know that the
Jewish population was destroyed in the Holocaust, but I don't understand
how there can be no trace at all of the family, given that Dubno is a
well-known and well-researched city. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you.

ViewMate request for photo identification #galicia

Richard Gross <richardgross@...>

I have posted on ViewMate a photograph of an unidentified soldier that
has been in my family album for decades. It is on ViewMate at the
following address...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM46457

I would be most appreciative to hear >from anyone who recognizes the
uniform -- the country, rank and approximate year the photo might have
been taken. The photo is on the opposite side of a postcard on which
the only printing is "Neptun 4646."

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much.

ViewMate translation request of two vital records - German #poland

Rick Luftglass

This is a resubmission of two of the three items in a post
I submitted yesterday. I had identified all three documents
as in Polish, but was subsequently informed that only one was
in Polish, while the other two are in German. Therefore, this
submission includes only the two German ones.

I've posted two vital records in German for which I need
word-for-word translations.

They are birth, marriage and death metrical records concerning
children of Seinwel/Zeinwel TREIBER, who I believe is my
great, great, great grandfather.

He was in Swirz and/or Sztreliska Nowe. They are on ViewMate at
the following addresses:.

Re: Why was French used by Turkish Jews? #sephardic

The French based Alliance Israelite Universelle had schools throughout the
Sephardic world. The teaching was in French.

French became the language of the educated and judo-espagnol was considered
less so. French words even became interspersed in ladino to demonstrate
more sophistication.

Look up Alliance Israelite Universelle and its schools.

Hi Sandy,

Your grandmother may have been educated in an Alliance Israel School
in Turkey, I believe even today, schools in Istanbul, Turkey teach in
2 languages, an example would be Turkish / French, Turkish / German
and so on.

A deceased friend of mine in the Jewish community in Istanbul spoke
many languages, she was educated in a French Speaking Catholic Convent
in Istanbul, but was later a teacher in the Jewish High School.

Hello Sandy,
In Turkey, people spoke French because L'Alliance Israélite Universelle
(Universal Jewish Alliance) created schools in 1873 in Salonica and students
learned French there. Only the very poor people didn't go to these schools
and spoke only ladino. I suppose it was the same in Istanbul and Canetti is
a name >from Istanbul rather than Salonica.

Philip & Laurence Abensur <laurphil@...>

Turkish Jews used to read and write in French because they attended the
Alliance Israelite Universelle's schools. They also used Judeo-Spanish in
the same time.
As you probably know, AIU has been founded in Paris in 1860 and the shools
have been opened in the 1870's in Turkey, as in Izmir for instance.

Best regards,

My mother passed away recently and in going through things in my
parent's house, I came across my paternal grandparents' wedding
invitation. It was written in French, not Ladino as I would expect. My
grandmother spoke five languages, but the books she read were in
French. I vaguely remember being told French was the language of
choice in the school she went to, which makes me wonder. In Turkey,
why French? Where would Turkish Jews typically go to school?
