Comparison of DNA testing services #dna

Arnold Samlan

I am interested in breaking through my proverbial "brick wall" that I've
reached in researching my father's genealogy. I know a little about Family
Tree DNA. At the same time, I've learned that ancestry.com has DNA testing
going on for what appears to be a much lower price. Can anyone help me to
understand the difference between the companies, and why one would be more
helpful to me than another?

Greetings to the Sapirstein Family.

The only record of a Caro rabbi descendant of Nikolsburg (and not
necessarily a descendant of Rabbi J.CARO of Sh.Aruh) is not called
Shmuel, Shmelke, nor KLEIN.

"What is the connection to Russia> What am I missing?"

Hooray for politics. You need to take a course in Polish historical geography to
figure things out. And you need to know where the person was actually born and
actually lived as well. And you have to know when the person was born and when he
moved.

Also, you have to know exactly what the question was - I was born in Buffalo, NY
but live in Princeton, NJ - and actually I live in West Windsor, a suburb of
Princeton. So it depends what the question asked for - and how much anybody cared
about the answer.

Posen was a province as well as a city; they probably weren't talking about the
city of Posen. My ggrandparents lived in Augustow, as I was told. Augustow was a
city but also a district which included the later Suwalki and Lomza gubernias.
They actually lived in a little town named Raczki, Poland at least at one time.
Other relatives lived in Sztabin and other towns in the area.

This area, however, was Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, German, and even French at
some time. And they probably were born in another area which was non-Polish
Russia, probably today's Belarus. Then there is the added complication with
immigrants. The census-taker, for example or clerk probably wasn't a linguist.
The immigrant spoke Yiddish (probably) and maybe a little English. Somebody may
have answered for the person; and that person may have been aware of the truth.

And that is why primary sources are needed. A birth record made at the time of a
person's birth would have most likely have the right location of the birth. An
informant on a death certificate might have been a neighbor or cousin who didn't
know where the person was born but said whatever. The census-taker might have put
Russia as the place of birth because he couldn't understand what the person said
and thought 'everybody in this building is >from Russia' or something, when
everybody was Jewish, some >from one side of the border and this person >from the
other.

This is why genealogy is such fun!

Good hunting,

The ports that Sergio mentioned are all located in Brazil. I suggest you to search

1st - There is an indexed database in the home page of the Memorial do Imigrante,
where you can search the arrival records for the Port of Santos, filling in only
the surname in the "sobrenome" box: http://www.memorialdoimigrante.org.br

2nd - The Arquivo Nacional (National Archives), which is located in the city of Rio

ports. You can write to them an e-mail or a letter in English asking for the
information you need, at no cost. e-mail: consultas@arquivonacional.gov.br

# 4 South American Questions - 5/23/09 #general

A few months ago I tracked down a relative in Quito, Ecuador by e-mailing the
Jewish Community of Quito - Email: aiq@cje-ec.com. All I had was a name >from a POT
on Yad Vashem. A very nice lady called Sara Kuperman (the executive director)
immediately responded saying she would send out some e-mails to the community.
Within a month I had the connection I was looking for - the grandson!

I write and speak fluent Spanish and would be happy to assist anyone needing
Spanish/English translation.

Abraham HORN & his 2 children #general

Judith Elam

I am trying to find Abraham HORN and his 2 children, a girl born 1923 and a boy
born 1924. Abraham was married to Sara MENDIZGURSKY. I don't know when or where
Abraham was born, but Sara was born 1889, Oswiecim. Abraham & Sara HORN lived in
Leipzig. Sara died in 1926. Abraham remarried and moved to Poland by 1935,
presumably with his new wife and his 2 children. I found a record on Ancestry.com
for an Abraham HORN living at Blucherstrasse 21 in the year 1932. There are a few
HORN records on Yad Vashem that could be him, but with so little information, it is
hard to match him up to a specific record.

If anyone can help to find this HORN family, please contact me at
