My family came >from seduve(shadova) in the 1880,s
and settled in Clocolon,Excelsior but mainly Winburg (Free State). there
were in all about 25 Jewish Families .Most of the services were held in my
Grandfathers House and at the Town Hall for High Holy days. In 1920 a
suitable stand was found given by the Municipal Council.. The Synagogue was
built with the financial help of the 25 families and some Afrikaner
Families. The last Jewish Family left in the 1980,s and the Shul fell into
disrepair and was finally demolished in 1998. I have visited South Africa
many times and searched for information but have never been able to
discover what happened to the Community or Shul Records although I have
found some snippets of information in the Zionist Record Journal. Families
with Winburg connections are.

GRAHAM LEWIS

Hi Everyone

My name is Graham Lewis emailing >from London, and I'm new to the SA
discussion group.

I wonder if anyone recognises or has any connection with the following
family (mine) >from Lithuania:

3 brothers, sons of Wolff and Sarah (surname perhaps LOURIE, LIURIA, LIURIE
or similar), left Lithuania possibly Shavl (Siauliai) in abt 1895:

1. Isaac LEWIS (Yitzchak Nissen b. Zev) (c.1863 - 1939) married
Shayna (Jane) nee Landsman (c.1865-1945)
Children: Solomon, Sarah, Max, Bertha, Esther, Rachel
Solomon (my gf) born 1887 in Shavl (Siauliai). Married Eva Goldberg.
Died 1973 London.
Family came to England c.1896 and settled in Manchester.
They used the name LEWIS on arrival. Original name unknown.

2. Abraham LAURIER (1869 - c.1936) born in Gordz (Gargzdai) married Berthe
nee Alstadter (born 1872 Ibaraz)
Children: Leon Galomz (born 1896 Paris); Isaac Jacob (1899 Hull); Sarah
Rebecca (1901 Manchester); Rachel (1903 Paris); Celine Lea (1906 Paris)
They came to Paris, France in 1895. Naturalised French in 1910.
They used the name LAURIER in France, but the children born in England had
spelling LURIE and LOURIE

3. Third brother, name unknown, understood went to South Africa.

I'm trying to pin down where the family came >from and the original name.
Finding info on the 3rd bro who went to SA may help.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Kind regds

Graham Lewis

Re: Meyer HASENFUS #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Since Meyer HASENFUS may have been murdered wouldn't there be references to
him in the newspapers of the time, both the Jewish and the Johannesburg
papers?

Also, wouldn't there be police records of the murder investigation and
subsequent court proceedings if the murderer were found? Police records
would usually have quite a bit of information regarding the deceased and his
family and the circumstances of his death. The court records would also be
probably quite voluminous and informative.

I know that in the United States police records are kept for long periods of
time, although I once looked for some that were 75 years old and found that
the police had just thrown them out. Actually, I thought that perhaps they
really hadn't thrown them out, but did not want to go and look for them in
storage.

Istanbul had an Ashkenazi community that grew with time and especially at

Crimean War Soldiers and Military Institutes #ukraine

Is there any database or listing of Jewish soldiers who fought in the
Crimean War (1854-56) or of soldiers who trained at military academies or
institutes in Ukraine (Russia at the time) during the latter part of the
19th century?

I'm looking for an ancestor, Joseph (last name unknown), who was a captain
in the army and his son Nathan YESOWITZ (which means son of Joseph) who
subsequently trained in a military academy. They were possibly >from Wolna
(now Belarus) or Kovel (now Ukraine).

I saw the list referred to and found a name of interest to me. Do
you know what additional information the records would
contain? Also, the link to re-sort the list or to order records did
not work for me.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: The list referred to is the Russian-Japanese War
of 1904-1905, sorted by town name.

If the links do not work for you, contact the owner of the list.
There is a link to sort by surnames as well.
