View Mate Translation: Aramaic text in Hebrew Ketubah WERTHEIMER/CHERNIN #general

Erika Herzog <erika_herzog@...>

I am seeking help translating the handwritten Aramaic text in the Hebrew Ketubah
of my maternal grandfather Samuel WERTHEIMER and grandmother Isabelle "Belle"
CHERNIN.

The viewmate link is:
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=10259

not sure if this is okay to post -- my first post to the list -- but I also
have the image in magnified form on flickr:

I am most concerned with the bottom portion of the form, as it is very sloppy.

Please reply privately.

Grateful thanks in advance!

Simmons and Rubinstein families #southafrica

Jane Moulding

Dear South African genners

I think I have thanked everyone personally for their help in tracing the
above families. Just in case I have left anyone out I would like to take
this opportunity to thank you publicly and to update you on my quest.

Thanks to everyone's kindness in forwarding my request for help I am now in
touch with Simmons relations all over the world.

My Rubinstein relation search has been less successful but I suspect that
they are all somewhere in the USA. (Family lore has it that Max was the
only one to go to South Africa and that his brothers all went to the USA.)
However I have now firmly established that Max Rubinstein was born in
Neustadt, Germany, now Lithuania. My only question now is which Neustadt.
(Please see below.)

Several people have taken the time to photograph Rubinstein graves for me,
photograph houses my grandparents lived in, contact the Chevra Kadisha in
Johannesburg to try to locate Max Rubinstein's grave, trawl through their
databases and search the archives in Pretoria for any more information about
him. I am indebted to you all.

I think that the likely place of origin for Max Rubinstein is Zemaiciu
Naumiestis (Yiddish: Neishtot-Tavrig, previously Neishtot Sugint), formerly
known as Neustadt. This small town lies between Taurage (the county town)
and Silute in western Lithuania. Although Zemaiciu Naumiestis appears more
probable, it is still possible that Max came >from Kudirkos Naumiestis
(Yiddish: Naishtot or Neishtot), formerly known as Wladislawow, and also
formerly known as Neustadt. This town lies on the River Sesupe, the border
between Lithuania and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, not far >from
Vilkaviskis in south-western Lithuania. Was there a particularly strong
tradition of immigration >from one Neustadt as opposed to the other in the
1880s? If it helps, Max was a Russian speaker. The reason I ask this is
that I am hoping to go to Lithuania in September and would like to have a
clearer idea of where to centre my research.

I would be particularly grateful if anyone could recommend a researcher in
Lithuania who might be able to help as I think trying to do anything without
help would be nigh on impossible. If so, please respond to me privately.

Thank you all again for all your help.

Kindest regards

Overlapping passenger databases? #general

Ira.Leibowitz@...

Hello all,

Findmypast.com is a database of passengers sailing >from the UK between
1890 and 1929. The names of passengers in the database can be searched
at the site, but ship records pertaining to those passengers are
available only for a fee.

I have found the names of family members in this database who are also
listed in the Ellis Island database (ellisisland.org). My question is:
Are the records available >from these databases different, or are they
the same?

Searching: AGRANOWITZ/AGRAN: Mogilev gubernia to Baltimore, MD
BISKER: Ukraine to Washington, DC, Sao Paulo, and Israel
LEIBOWITZ: Novogrudok, Belarus, to New York City area
SHEVRIN: Starobin, Belarus, to New York City
STERNER: Khodorov, Ukraine, to New York City

Try the KARTA website I believe Steve Morse has a search engine for it.
It contains information on internment and release.

Re: looking for my late husband Jewish roots.. #general

Morty Rochman <mr72@...>

The name Hofer probably resulted >from the Germanic custom of adding
"er" after a town to indicate "comes from".

In this case, a Hofer came >from Hof which is located in the
Frankenwald area of Bavaria north of Bayreuth.

Hof is certainly not an area heavily populated by Jews at the
present and probably not too likely in past times either.

It sounds like your husband's family may well have come >from Hof
before moving to Austria.

If you do come up with anything more substantive, I've got friends
who live in close proximity to Hof who could do some research for you.

Morty

From: Maria Hofer <piruli_7@yahoo.com>

My late husband last name was Hofer-Kingsley. I am very interested
to find out if any of those names have any Jewish roots.

My family tree data also appears on the same file that belongs to Person
(Code 69697).
You mention that Person (Code 69697) knew the identity of the people who had
helped him in the past, but could not remember where he got his information
from, nor what his sources were. I am curious to know his identity as he has
never contacted me.

With regard to the source of STERN HANAU. This data was obtained when I
downloaded a file >from a commercial site. The common name being HANAU, which
is the name of my uncle.

I am happy to send you the name of the site and the file number.

Re: Bridgeport, CT - FARFEL, FODEMAN, KRAMER, D'ELIA, KLIVANSKY #general

backon@...

Steinsteve@aol.com writes
Thanks to a generous fellow researcher, I just discovered that a FARFEL
family member >from Nesvizh, Belarus (was Russia at the time they left), perhaps
as close as a great-great-uncle, settled in Bridgeport around 1900. Children
include the aforementioned surnames. I would appreciate any contacts in these
families, as I have thus far traced only as far forward as the 1930 census
plus the recently posted cemetery records for Fairfield, CT. I believe the
family has spread out throughout Fairfield County, Massachusetts, and the rest
of Connecticut. Thanks.

Here's a general tip: you may wish to access the newspaper News Archive on
http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search?hl=en&q=
typing in the family name and the city. Indeed (as someone who was
raised in Bridgeport) the name Fodeman was familiar and came up on
the news search.

As did an obituary notice >from 1951 for a Mrs. Annie Farfel Klivansky.
