Many thanks for this info!!

There seems to be a large gap in deaths between 1847 and 1885. Does
anyone know where the intervening data may be held?

lists of orphans in the care of the Orphans Commission of the Jewish
Congregation. A database exists that contains part of the data.

Dear Genners
does anyone know how to get records of marriages >from synagogues in
Johannesburg south africa?
the synagogues where our parents and grandparents were married are
most likely closed by now as the Jews have migrated.
I am thinking in particular of Fordsburg Jeppe and Kensington Synagogues.
I would appreciate suggestions.

answer to my question about dates stamped on a manifest #general

sgootman@...

I have received an answer to my question regarding the stamped
dates on a ship manifest >from 1921. I thought others might be
interested in the information I received. The date stamped on
the manifest was placed there when a person applied for citizenship
to verify the information of when they came to America. The date
stamped was the date that the information was verified by the
government agent. This was only done in the 1920's.

Thanks again to the people who were kind enough to e-mail me.

Philadelphia Marriage Indexes #general

Hello Friends,
I've located some probable relatives on the Philadelphia Marriage
Indexes, now online. However, obtaining copies >from that city entails
sending two checks totalling $35.00. Part of the cost is for research,
the other I suppose is time. At any rate is there a more economical
way of doing this?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Cemetery Help for Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn #general

Marlena Esterson

Shalom All,

I know that there is a family plot at Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn.
I know my great-grandmother, Ida Laber Steuer and great-grandfather,
William Steuer are interred in Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn,
Cemetery II. They are side by side. I have photos of their
footstones and the headstone for Ida Steuer. I would very much like a
photo of my great-grandfather's headstone, if there is one and for the
others there in the family plot, his sister and brother-in-law and
Ida's brother and sister-in-law and her sister and brother-in-law.
There are a couple others there and I am trying to figure out who they
are with minimal information. I am hoping the headstones and/or
footstones will shed some light as to who they are and give me missing
information on my relatives. If possible, it would be great to also
have a picture of the entire plot.

I live in Israel, and getting to New York for research is an
impossibility right now. I do have details on their 'locations' from
the cemetery that I'd be happy to provide to anyone who can go by.
I have been trying to find out by snailmail if other family members
are also buried at Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn, but still haven't
heard anything >from them.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Michal Esterson

Where are the list of persons arriving in the USA between 1917 - 1920? #romania

Harriet Weidenbaum

I feel I've searched every port I know of including Canadian ports
and have yet to locate my great grandfather Israel Leventhal's entry
to the USA >from Moldova (Russia) between 1917 - 1920.

I've also searched the census reports and have not located someone
in that age bracket.

I have yet to locate his departure for Palestine, I assume within
the year he arrived. We know that he died in Palestine on 3/3/1930.

I am guessing that he was born between 1840 and 1850 as the first of
his children that I know of was born about 1871 and the last that I
know of 3/28/1892.

If in searching you come upon any info regarding an Israel Leventhal
(Lowenthal or Laventhal) born about that time and entering or
departing the USA as per my notations I would appreciate hearing from
you.

Appreciatively,
