Galician research in Warsaw USC #galicia

Renee Steinig

My husband's paternal grandfather, Isidore (Israel Isser) STEINIG,
son of Asher Selig STEINIG and Chaya Zippe WACHSTEIN, was born
c. 1888 in Tluste (4851 2544; now Tovste, Ukraine). U.S. records
(naturalizations, passenger manifests, etc.) indicate that
members of his immediate STEINIG family lived in Tluste until at
least 1908. WACHSTEIN cousins lived in Tluste until the Shoah.

According to the Routes to Roots Foundation's (i.e. Miriam
Weiner's) online database at
<http://www.rtrfoundation.org/archdta.shtml>, the following
Jewish records for Tluste survive at the USC (Urzad Stanu
Cywilnego) in Warsaw:

birth 1868-1920, 1922-1939
marriage 1890-1939
death 1924-1934

I am considering hiring a researcher to explore them for the
names STEINIG, WACHSTEIN and SCHACHNER / SCHAECHNER / SCHECHNER
(maiden name of both Selig's and Chaya Zippe's mothers). Has
anyone done or had someone do a similar search at the Warsaw USC
-- i.e. a search for several specified surnames in a similarly
sized town? (About 2,200 Jews lived in Tluste in 1880 and about
1,200 in 1921.) I'd appreciate any advice you can give me about
the process -- approximate cost, strategies for collaborating
with other genealogists, etc.

Please respond privately. I'll send out a summary of the m
essages I receive.

Thank you. Hag sameyach!

Krenzburg #latvia

I am researching a friend's grandfather who is supposed to have come
from Riga. However the Ellis Island manifest entry for him shows his
place of origin as Krenzburg, which I can not locate.

Is Krenzburg an old German or Prussian name for a current town in or
around Riga?

Thanks to all

I want to thank Joel for making the Grodno directories available.

I downloaded the one for 1872, hoping that I could spot the name of my
grandparents' town and then the related surnames, using a Cyrillic
alphabet cheat sheet, but find it impossible. I can't figure out
whether the headings are the names of towns, uyezds, or what.

Is it possible that someone who reads Russian could tell me/ us that
much? (I'm looking for Wisoke-Litovsk in Brest uyezd).

I am trying to find two pieces of information about Lomza. One is the
address of the Lomza Yeshiva. >from my own research, it seems to have been
located on Projektna street (now known as Jana Kolna street), near the Great
Synagogue on Senatorska street. I am also trying to figure
out the boundaries of the Jewish Ghetto in Lomza. Although they were
not in Lomza at the time, their former residence probably was near the
Yeshiva and within the area that became the Ghetto.

All input would be appreciated.

Panevezys District Research Group #lithuania

Dorfleiv@...

The Panevezys District Research Group of LitvakSIG provides the funds which
make it possible to obtain records for all of the shtetls (towns) in the
Panevezys Uyezd (district) of Kaunas Gubernia (region) of Lithuania.

This District includes the town of Birzai, Geleziai, Joniskelis, Krekenava,
Linkuva, Mazgiai,Naujamiestis,Nemunelio Radviliskis, Pakruojis, Pumpenai,
Pamusis, Panevezys, Pasvalys, Pusalotas, Ramygala, Rozalimas, Salociai,
Truskava, Vabalninkas, Vaskai, and Zeimelis

The focus is primarily on translating revision and family lists. These
were registers for each family officially registered in a given shtetl
Qualified donors for the district are sent excel files of all records
translated for that district and new translations soon after they are
completed. This is usually one year or so before they are published on
the All Lithuania Database ("ALD"). The donation level to qualify to
receive these is $100 US.

All the $100 qualified donors to the Panevezys Research District Group
should have received an invitation to join our new Group website. That
invitation is not spam. It was sent out to all those who appear on the
donation list for the District. A number of the invitations have bounced
so if you have not received one, please write me privately and let me
know. Similarly, in case my records contain errors, do let me know
if you think you should have received an invitation and did not.

Over the years, this group has translated in excess of 50,000 lines of
data. It is now very short of money. I hope that existing contributors
will make an additional contribution so that work can continue. And of
course, I would like to encourage anyone with an interest in the Panevezys
District to join the group.

Without your financial contributions, we cannot translate the many files
that we know are still waiting to be done!
