Waldeck Index Unlocked #germany

Roger Lustig

Dear all:
I just discovered that Google Spreadsheets shared at the "view" level
cannot be sorted or filtered, which drastically limits the value of the
prototype I shared with you yesterday.

I have now changed that--anyone can have full access. That said, please
don't make changes. Sort and filter all you want, but leave things as
they are. I have added a Comments column at the right.

Again, this is just a prototype. The final product will either be part
of JewishGen's databases or have similar search capabilities.

As before, I ask for your comments, wishes and recommendations, so that
the "real thing" is as useful as possible.

I'm interested in searching the 1897 census for my Uman and Talne relatives. #ukraine

mrl@...

Hi - I contacted a researcher, to ask them what it would cost to search
for my relatives, in the 1897 census, who lived in Uman and Talne.
Supposedly, unlike other cities, many census books for Uman and Talne
have survived. The problem is, the high cost for researching them.
This is especially true of Uman, which has many census books, so the
cost if quite high to search through all them. In order to reduce the
cost, if can find other people who are interested in paying to research
relatives in those cities, then the cost would be greatly reduced.
I.e., the cost for looking for additional surnames, is very minimal. If
anybody has an interest in looking for relatives in those 2 cities, and
helping out with the cost, I would very much appreciate knowing.
Thanks! And I would also be interested in knowing if anybody has
recently paid someone to search the census for those cities, and whether
the search was successful, and what exactly was found (or wasn't
found). Thanks.

Further to Jan Meisels Allen's post in the Digest for July 13, those
visiting Vienna might wish to know that the cemetery is located in
Seegasse, in Vienna's Ninth District. For German readers, an article,

Viewmate Translation Request - Yiddish to English #general

Michael Shade

Dear Genners,

I have posted on Viewmate a letter written in Yiddish in Hebrew script, for
which I would appreciate a full translation into English:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=28107

The letter has been found by a cousin in Israel, amongst the effects of her
father, and was written to him by his sister in Poland in 1936. The
document I have been given covers two smallish pages of about 20 lines per
page, 8 to 10 words per line. I believe it may be only the middle part of
the letter, pages 2 and 3, with pages 1 and 4 on the reverse side currently
missing. If this turns out to be the case I'll post the missing part as
soon as I receive it.

As a bonus - but not essential - I would also appreciate a transcription of
the original Yiddish into Latin script, as I cannot read Hebrew, but may be
able to understand some of the Yiddish.

Many thanks in advance,

Michael

Looking for old New York street photo #general

Bruce Drake <bruce.drake@...>

This is a longshot, but I am looking for a photo that would include the
block of 10 Delancey St, on the Lower East Side, circa 1913-1917, where my
grandfather had a restaurant. I've scoured the internet, the photo archive
that the city of New York maintains, and other sources without success. If
you have such a photo or a lead to where one might be found, please respond
privately.

Dear Group.=2C=0A=
My father is originally >from Pavlovce in Slovakia and he has always told us=
the story that before he "enlisted" in the Russian partisans he worked in =

He claims that they were able to have kosher food (apparently they pooled =
their pay) and there was a designated person that always went out and broug=

I have tried locating information about this Labor group/camp unsuccessfull=
