Etymology of the family Weiss names #galicia

Yaakov Weiss <gmw112252@...>

Years back I submitted a request to the Genealogy Department at the
Diaspora Museum (Beit Hatfutsot) in Israel for the Etymology of the
name "Weiss" area "Lemberg, Galicia" (Austro-Hungarian Empire). I
got back some research that I posted as a sharing document on
ViewMate.

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=14373

The short of it is that the idea of Jews lining up and being assigned
surnames is not urban or shtetl mythology. (Even though we might
think that scenario sounds a bit illogical today.) And perhaps like
chicken soup and colds, sometimes - even if at first we don't
understand why - a little bit of legend >from the Old Country sooner
or later rings as true as a bell. I think that maybe a part of doing
Jewish Genealogy is us trying to substantiate this theory.

Best,

Yaakov Weiss

INTRO and request for help #austria-czech

hnshani@...

Hello Austria-Czech Sigers,

This is my first posting to the group (but I have been watching it for
a while) in an attempt to crack a 'mystery'. It is a bit long, so
kindly bear with me.

Introduction: I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, speak Hebrew and
English fluently but my German is very limited. No Czech knowledge at
all.

I have been doing genealogy research for about 3 years, and consider
myself to be somewhat intermediate in doing genealogy research (not
only with German roots, but also Polish or wherever our families were
dispersed).

I am well versed with PCs (any PC: Mac - which is my preferred PC - or
Windows-based. No Linux experience). My experience in using the
Internet is extensive. If any of you have any questions regarding PCs
or the web, I'll be glad to try and answer.

Asking for help: my current research goal is to find new information
(beyond what I have outlined below) about Alois P. WACHSTATTER. I
suspect that Alois is the brother (or cousin) of my grandfather. The
Austria-Czech bit of information I have is related to his whereabouts
is interspersed, hence the request for help >from this group.

It would be great if I could find more information that would link
Alois to my immediate family. In addition, I would like to find more
details about Edita Katerina KANN (her origin is given as Slovak in
the boat manifest) and if they had any family.

Any ideas, assistance or information (a very long shot) will be appreciated.

Information known to-date: here is what I know about Alois P.
WACHSTATTER. most gleaned >from National Archive of Australia files
(they were kind enough to send me some copies) and ancestry.com:
- Born on 1906-May-02
- Birth place: Zator, Bielsko-BiaÅ?a/Galicia, Poland (in 1906 it was
part of the Austro-Hungarian empire)
- Spoke: Czech, German, Polish, and English
- Graduated as a medical professional (Dentist? Physician? Surgeon?
All 3 are given, but not together), probably >from a Prague institute
in the early 1930s
- Visited NYC (aboard the SS President Roosevelt, departed 1938-Aug-04
from Le Havre, France, arrived 1938-Aug-13), probably to receive his
Australian immigration papers
- Received a Permit to Immigrate to Australia in 1938-Aug-26 >from the
Australian consulate in NY
- Arrived in Sydney, Australia on 1939-May-16 aboard the SS
Strathmore, >from London, England, and was busy inventing ('lamps for
use in blackout' was one of them)
- Married(?) Edita Katerina KANN (b. 1922-Jan-09, arrived in Melbourne
on 1939-Feb-07), who followed him to California - this is somewhat
unclear, as Edita followed Alois to California as 'single' per ship
manifest. Marriage record number >from NSW is 7868/1940
- Alois arrived in California (aboard the SS Monterey departed
1940-Sep-20 >from Sidney, NSW, Australia, arrived 1940-Oct-08). From
the NAA records, it looks like he filmed a movie in Australia for
screening in the US. Title name given as 'Wounded Hearts' ('Srdce
Probodena' - is that Czech? Polish?)
- May have settled in Lassen County, California (based on 1940s voters
rolls - no confirmation received so far >from the county clerk)
- Applied for citizenship, based on NARA M1675 (Index to Declarations
of Intention of the US District Court for the Southern District of NY,
1917-1950). No idea if/what year this actually happened - sometime
between 1941 and 1950
- Hamburg, Germany: 1964-1965 phone directory has a listing of him.
The scan is not clear, so no specific address is known.

Thank you for any assistance you can lend me.

Naftali Shani

Lunch at the July Conference: Would you attend? #belarus

Sfingold

Hi, everyone. We are starting to plan the Belarus SIG activities at the
Jewish Genealogy conference in Los Angeles in July. We will have a SIG meeting.
We can also organize a SIG lunch as we have done in past years.

I would like to take a poll and find out how many people are interested in
attending a SIG lunch for about $30 (estimated cost--and this is really an
estimate might be less or slightly more) and do we have any volunteers who
would be interested in speaking at the lunch.

Please respond to me PRIVATELY (not to the SIG list) at sfingold@...
ONLY if you are thinking of attending the lunch.

If you are thinking of attending the lunch, does it make a difference to you
whether there is a speaker or not?

Do you have an idea for a speaker (yourself or someone else)? If so, please
provide name of person and topic.

Thank you!

Sharon Fingold
JewishGen Belarus SIG co-coordinator
