Kessinow, Russia - Kishinev, Moldava #general

Dream Builder <dreambuilder@...>

Although I have already thanked all who responded to my question about
"Kessinow, Russia" personally, I wanted to post a general thank you because
I have gotten so many responses.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that this is Kishinev, Moldava. I will now
concentrate my search there and hopefully prove the connection. I will
attempt to contact HIAS and the Balch Institute to find out what information
they can provide for me.

I am grateful to all of JewishGen.

Dear Genners

The other day a genner sent me a message that Abraham's grandson was named
Nocher, so it appears that my Uncle Irving may well have been Nocher as
despite the fancy writing of those days, it was very clear and not subject
to: what is that letter really? it definitely was spelled *Nocher*. Thank
you to all who had made varius suggestions and thanks to Arye Don.

Deportation of Polish Jews from Germany 1938. #general

Willie Glaser

This coming October 28, 2002 will be the 64th anniversaryof the deportation
of Polish Jews residing in Germany to Poland.
On October 28, 1938 some 17,000 Jews with Polish citizenship were suddenly
expelled >from Germany to Poland.
On October 29, the Polish authorities closed the border, the German
authorities had to turn around two trains full with men, women and children
and returning them to their home cities.
Most of the people pushed over the Polish border perished in the Holocaust.

I will be establishing a web site to commemorate this historical event.
If you are or know of survivors of these transports please contact me
privately.

Amer. Comm. of OSE & Child holocaust survivor #general

Barbara L. Kornblau

After much research and help >from JewishGen sources, I met a distant
relative (same name, nearby town in Poland) who survived the holocaust as a
child in hiding in France. His parents were on the list of Jews deported
from France.
Something he never got over was that no one came for him after the war. He
remembered that before the war his father wrote letters to a relative in
Brooklyn but he didn't know the name of that relative. I told him I would
help him try to locate this relative or his descendants.

Yesterday I found the Aufbau database on JewishGen and lo and behold there
is an advertisement >from the American Committee of OSE listing a Daniel
Kornblau, age 30 of Brooklyn, NY searching for Maurice and Adolphe Kornblau.
Unfortunately, the children were still in France and the ad was in a German
newspaper. Daniel never found the boys and they grew up in an orphanage in
France.

On the net I discovered that the American Committee of the OSE (World Union
for Preserving the Health of Jews) has its archives housed in the NY Public
Library's Inventory of the Emergency Committee In Aid of Displaced Foreign
Scholars Records, 1933-1945, Box 146.

Has anyone used these archives for this committee? Might the archives
contain a form that Maurice's cousin filled out to request the search for
the boys? If this archives has the information, I might find Maurice's
relatives after 57 years. Any help is much appreciated. Time is running out
for Maurice. Thanks in advance.

Barbara L. Kornblau
Maurice's father was born in Czarna, Poland near Lancut and Rzeszow and his
name was Chaskel Kornblau

Details on Newark Evening News name index? #general

Alex Bender <alemik@...>

Hello,
I've heard that there is a name index in book form of the Newark
Evening News. I went online and searched for more information on
this item, but wasn't very successful. I'd appreciate it if somebody
could tell me exactly what the book indexes - supposedly it's every
name that ever appeared in the newspaper. What range of years
does it index? Does it simply list names and the dates of papers in
which they appear?

I am in California. Is there any way for me to access the index
and/or the paper archives without traveling to New Jersey?

This would be quite valuable to me, as my grandfather was a
journalist at the paper, and many other ancestors either died or
were married in Newark. Thanks for any pointers.

Dear Genners,

I have gleaned the following information >from the BelarusSIG and
GaliciaSIG digests. Ordinarily we don't reprint material, but
this information is special so I took the liberty of extracting it.

Issie Fine, >from the Belarus SIG recently visited Halifax,
Nova Scotia's Pier 21. This is the site whre most of the immigrants
to Canada >from 1928 to 1971 arrived and is now a Museum. Mr. Fine
calls it "Canada's equivalent to Ellis Island."

They have a resource center where a member of the staff was able to
locate his father on a database and he was able to obtain a copy of the
original immigration manifest >from the microfilm.

Their website is pier21.ns.ca
For those of you who may be intrested in ordering tapes >from the
wonderful sessions at the Toronto Conference - the website is

http://www.jgstoronto2002.ca/Tapes.htm

Having been there, I can attest to the fact that the speakers were
all wonderful. The information was presented in a clear and concise
manner and the Q & A afterwards was quite thought provoking.
Enter Stephen Morse.......... who seems to be on a mission to
make life a whole lot easier for us 'computer potatoes'...........
and to whom we all owe a great big THANK YOU!
(This would be a good time to show our JewishGen-erosity
by making a donation in his honor).
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Contribute.ihtml

He and another computer genius >from Switzerland, Yves Goulnik
have incorporated the ability to sort the text version of a manifest by
line numbers. Their program intercepts the text manifest that the
Ellis Island site sends back and re-sorts it so that the passengers
are in the right order.

http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html

Keep in mind - - this only works if you access the text manifest
starting >from Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form.
This website <http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/index.jsp>
contains the complete contents of the 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia,
originally published between 1901-1906. The Jewish Encyclopedia,
recently became part of the public domain, contains over 15,000
articles and illustrations. However, there is still some very important
information to be found there.

My ancestor, Rivke KATZ KREMENETSKY, was born in
Worms/Vorms(now Vinogradnoye), a German speaking town
in the Odessa area. (Settled by Germans in the late
1700's at the invitation of Catherine the Great.) In
1906 there were 18 Jewish families in this town of
1000 people, according to a life story recorded by
Rivke's son. One of the residents was Sam
GALTER/GAULTER/GOLTER who, later in his life, was one
of the founders of "The City of Hope Cancer Hospital"
in Los Angeles, Ca. The recorded life history has much
information about the town, and first names of many
Jewish residents; unfortunately the surnames are
unintelligible. If any one has any knowledge of,
ancestors from, or interest in this town, please
contact me. Rivke KATZ KREMENESTSKY was related to
many of the Jewish families in this town. I'll be
happy to share my meager information.

families, selling the women and children into slavery to the Muslims. Most
of the 23 synagogues of Seville were either destroyed or converted to

their Jewishness less obvious and to give themselves a chance to survive.

Marcia,
To find out the dates the Utria or any other shipped arrived you
need to get a copy of the Morton Allen Passenger Directory.

Hope this helps.

I have had success in using Stephen Morse's wonderful site to get

information >from the Ellis Island database, but I still cannot find the
person I am hunting and I feel he will be an important key in getting
information on my family because he was the first of the siblings to join
his uncle. I do not know the town he travelled >from although the
naturalization papers say Vilkomir, because I am fairly sure these were
not city people. Also the ship listed, Etruria >from Hamburg also appears
inaccurate. I do not know if it is the ship name or the port, and
definitely the date is not accurate.

To make it worse, our family name
is Cohen which I am sure is not original but what it was is unknown. I
know this person was young, I found him in the 1905 census living with
his uncle in Glens Falls, NY. Is there a way I can see manifests for
1904,1905 to check on passenger destinations. Surely this Glens Falls
uncle will be listed there, as he is for family tht arrived two years
later..

ANY suggestion is welcome. How to find the dates the Etruria sailed and
from where; how to get destination names/addresses >from the manifests.
Also, this person's name was Eleazer, a name that rarely is shown on the
Ellis Island lists. Was there another name that was commonly used in its
place? Here this person became Sam Ellis. I have also looked up
Sam,.Smuel, Simon, etc, without success.

Thanks for any ideas.
