Re: Ukraine Genealogy Researcher #ukraine

It will be three years this coming summer since I engaged a Ukrainian national, living in Ukraine, to conduct research into my family's history at the Kamenets Podolsk Archives facility. I have yet to see anything >from this fellow, though he did email me about 6 months ago to tell me that he had spoken to his assistant at the Archives and was told by that assistant that the research I had engaged him to do had been completed and was being mailed to him by his assistant (the fellow I hired lives in another city in Ukraine, Czernovtsi I believe).

In any event, I still have nothing >from this fellow. I cannot say for certain that he has done any research, himself or by an assistant. I may have been simply ripped off. I know that names of researchers cannot be disclosed on this site, but I would appreciate exchanging private emails with any other family historians who have used private researchers to access records at Kamenets Podolsk Archives, merely to exchange information on the results, or lack or results, obtained >from these entrepreneurs.

LILIENTHAL, HERZOG, NAKONIECZNY - Poland #general

DAGAG123@...

The Pro Archivo has uncovered some additional information regarding my
husband's family.

Maurycy LILIENTHAL, son of Jakob and Jetta/Itta(RINGER) LILIENTHAL married
Flora HERZOG in 1937 in Krakow. They lived in Krakow after WWII. They
changed their name to Antoni and Olga NAKONIECZNY in 1947.

Am I correct in assuming that they were either hiding/changing their
Jewish identity?

Do the names Herzog or Nakonieczny appear in anybody's family?

Re: Jewish Naming Permission #germany

Surnames were assigned using different procedures in
different locations, so whatever happened in that
small area could be very different than what happened
somewhere else.

Either the officials recording the names or the
families themselves chose the names. Sometimes there
were rules (like a 'German' sounding name in Germany)
set down by the government. That is my theory for the
origin of 'Bruckheimer' as I think it came >from the
name Baruch which was common in the family.

Having said all that, the story sounds fishy to me.
Why would a Jewish family want to name itself after a
Catholic family 10 miles away? 10 miles was a long
way for the family to go if there wasn't a
relationship. And the family did not need anyone's
permission to use a name-except the recording
officials. I would guess that there is a relationship
with the Catholic family (they admit knowing about
'giving permission' over 100 years later).
