finding a burial site #general

Rafael Gordon <rafail@...>

Is there an easier way to find a burial site of a person except calling
every cemetery in New York and New Jersey? I am searching Louis
Weinstein who died in 1979.

Help needed--Alabama 1855 state Census index #general

Rachel Unkefer <runkefer@...>

I just found my husband's great-grandfather in the 1860 census in
Mobile, Alabama, but not his brother, who I think must have been
there with him. Alabama took a state census in 1855, which I can get
on microfilm >from the LDS, but I can't get the index, which was
published in a book: Jackson, Ronald Vern. Alabama 1855 Census Index
. Bountiful, Utah: Accelerated Indexing Systems, 1984 . If somebody
lives in Alabama or near a library which holds this reference book, I
would greatly appreciate knowing if the ancestor appears in the index
before I order the microfilm of the census. The names I am searching
are DOERNBERG/DORNBERG/DORNBURG or any other alternate spellings that
somebody might have come up with or NEWBERGER/NEUBERGER, who I
suspect was related to Joseph Doernberg's brother-in-law.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. I am happy to reciprocate in
any way I can.

The Tartak #general

Judith Romney Wegner

Dear JGenners,

Heartfelt thanks to the three or four language experts who kindly
informed me that Tartak is Polish for a sawmill, thus Baal
ha-Tartak meant the owner/operator of the sawmill rather than a
maker of idols like the one in the Second Book of Kings!

So now I'm wondering if he carved a few Tartaks -- or even Baals! --
on the side, to move the lumber when business was slack .....

Looking for Levitt, Todias, #ukraine

Mortrumberg1@...

Hi Genners,

I'm looking for any information on my mother's and grandfather's siblings.
Here's the story: My mother, Marion LEVITT Rumberg had several brothers and
sisters. The family was separated by divorce in 1921 and the children sent to
live in orphanages and foster homes. According to the Jewish Child Care
Association of NY, the children's names were:

Aaron LEVITT
Samuel LEVITT
Annie or Amy LEVITT TOBIAS
Marion LEVITT RUMBERG
Sadie LEVITT
Esther LEVITT
Tillie LEVITT
Francis LEVITT
Louis LEVITT

I believe Amy LEVITT married a TOBIAS (no other known name).

I expect that all of them are now deceased (my mother passed away in 2002 at
age 93), so I am trying to locate any surviving children.

My mother's father was Harris or Hannis LEVITT. His wife (my gm) was Yetta
KUTLOW. Both Yetta KUTLOW and Harris LEVITT came >from Kiev, Russia. To the
best of my knowledge, everyone resided in the New York City area.

If any Genners know of these people or their children, or have suggestions
how I can locate them, please notify me privately.

Many thanks,
Mort Rumberg

Re: KATZENELLENSON-NELSON, Bobruisk #general

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz

When I was planning to make aliya in 1995, I started selling my books. One
purchaser of paperbacks was in a small town in northern Kentucky. After we
had completed our transactions, the young man behind the counter said that
he noticed that many of my books were of Jewish interest. He leaned over and
whispered, "I'm Jewish, too." His surname was Nelson. Of course, I
immediately asked about his name and where his family originated. He told me
that the name had originally been Katznelson but his grandfather dropped the
Katz. I told him that there was a famous Zionist named Berl Katzenelson. He
exclaimed, "That's my name, Berl!"
He promised to ask his uncles for more family information and get back to
me. He never did.

Hello to You,
while researching the INTRATOR and/or INTRATER familiy I found in the
Yizkorbook of Stryj (Turka) name:Interator first name:(Baal Ha

expliciting the meaning of these words does not gfive me any insight to

Charles,

Tartak in Polish means sawmill. Thus Intrater was the sawmill owner.
There is the village Iskon near town Dubiecko (west of Przemysl) in Poland
where S. Intrater was a sawmill owner during the Austrian rule and during
the interwar period.

D. Intrater had a sawmill and lumber business in town Strzylki (near Turka),
district Stary Sambor (currently in Ukraine) , and P. Intrator was in the
forestry business (owner) in Kotow, Dobromil region (currently north of town
Sanok, Poland).

You should check your inherited ownership rights to those properies.
