Odessa school for violin and photography #general

Paul Gordon <flash@...>

My partner's grandfather >from Ariogala (near Kovno) studied photography
and violin in Odessa around 1903, give or take a year. He was probably
a late teenager at this point. I don't know anything about where he
studied or how long he was there.

My questions:

(1) How can I determine the name of the school he attended? Was there
a school in Odessa that specialized in areas like the ones he studied?

(2) How common was it for someone >from the Kovno area to study things
like violin and photography in a place as far away as Odessa? Was this
an option available only to the relatively wealthy?

Thanks for your help.

STEINER / SPITZER Families #general

Hello To All researchers:

I have just recieved a death record on my great-great grandmother on
my fathers side. Her name was Celia/Cecelia STEINER. Her maiden name
was spitzer. She was married to Samuel Steiner. They were both born in
hungary about 1864 and came to new york about 1892-93. According to
the death record her parents were Joseph SPITZER & Theresa Klein.
Celia died in 4/29/1935 in the Bronx, New York. I have been unable to
track down the date of death of the husband Samuel. He was still
living at the time of the wife's passing. They had two kids, theresa
(Steiner)Harris (Died 1974) and Erwin (Died 1956). If anyone has any
information on these families please contact me, for I would love to
know more.

Gaon Moses Samuel Zwi #rabbinic

Denis Levy <d.ms.levy@...>

Dear all,

One of my ancestors was Rabbi Jehuda LOEB (or Levi Samuel). He died
in 1696. His grave in Herford (Nordrhein-Westfalen) says: "Sohn des
Gaon, des Gelehrten Moses Samuel Zwi sel. And."

I know nothing else about this gaon, nor does Bernhard Brilling in
his article about Herford graveyard.

I am interested in any information related to Gaon Moses Samuel Zwi.

Thanks.

Rabbi Jacob Z. LAUTERBACH #rabbinic

Menachem Butler <menachembutler@...>

Dear Rav-SIGers:

Is anyone aware of genealogical and/or historical records about
Rabbi Jacob Z. LAUTERBACH (1873-1942)? Rabbi LAUTERBACH received his
rabbinic ordination >from the Orthodox Berlin Rabbinical Seminary
(though it was later revoked) and was later a professor at Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati, and also the chairman of the Responsa
Committee for the CCAR (Reform) for nearly two decades.

I have checked the basic books [in English] relevant to Berlin
Orthodoxy of the late 19th and early 20th century and I have been
unable to find any substantial relevant information about him.

Any thoughts?

Chag Kasher ve-Sameach,

Thank you very much,

Need Help Finding Ship Manifest #general

Bridget Wynne <rabbiwynne@...>

Hello:

I've found a relative of mine's ship passenger record on the Ellis Island
Database, but I cannot find the scanned manifest for him, using the EIDB or
the Morse One-Step web pages. Can anyone else help me find the manifest?

He is listed as Mc Turket, immigrating to the U.S. on the New York, sailing
from Southampton to New York, arriving April 19, 1897, 27 years old, with
his last residence being Russia. His Ellis Island Passenger ID number is
103034170532.

Now I want to see the manifest itself and get the rest of the story on him!

Thanks and Chag Sameach/Happy Passover,
