Alex offered to try to identify locations and I have been looking for
this one apparently listed on emigration form >from where my gf Benjamin
Singer came in 1880 on the SS Weiland >from Hamburg. It is Schinane.

Re: Town Location #hungary

Peg and Al Rosenfield <alanpeg@...>

I looked up Kamensky in Wikipedia. They list six districts named Kamensky.
My gr-grandfather FINESTONE reported on the 1900 census that he came form
Volhynia, which is a region, and I had to look deeper to find which town -
it turned out to be Zhitomir.

I recently learned that my ggf came >from KAMENSKY, but I don't seem to be
able to locate it. Does anyone have a knowledge of that town. My ggf's
name was BYALILOVSKY.

Thank you,

Norm Solat

Re: Help request for Pittsburgh cemetery #germany

My cousins and I believe that our GG parents are buried in Beth Hamedrash
Hagodol-Beth Jacob Congregation's cemetery in Pittsburgh. Our requests
(multiple) of Rabbi Savage, his staff and cemetery caretaker to obtain some
photos of the tombstones, with offers to pay for service, have not been
forthcoming.
A year has passed, with more excuses yesterday, and so we hope that someone
living in this area might help us.

Contact information for the synagogue (I believe it is Orthodox) is:
Beth Hamedrash Hagodol-Beth Jacob Congregation
Rabbi Savage
1230 Colwell Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15219

The following are the cemetery locations for:
Rose Chernoff: Death Date, 4/20/1929 (80 years old)
Plot: Section E, Row 4, Lot 48
Isaac Chernoff: Death Date: 7/26/1910 (57 years old)
Plot: Section E, Row 4, Lot 47
Esther E. Chernoff: Death Date, 1/21/1906 (6 years old)

New search request FISCHER arrival in USA in 1879 #general

Jenni Hymoff Koeppel

Hello again fellow genners:

A recently found "half fourth cousin" just told me that she was told by her
grandmother that "The story was that the Kadetsky name wasn't really their
name, and it was Fischer and they were Litvaks, meaning (to her), variously,
that they were >from Lithuania or Belorus. But who knows!"
I've searched on Castle Garden without any hits and do not have access to
any other online sites >from Spain.

The details as I know them are that Abraham and his wife Scillia or Celia
arrived in the US in 1879 with his sister Adeline and possibly (maybe their
mother) Rose and Pauline (information based on census data obtained). They
settled in the Boston area and have been known since then as Kadetsky and
are all accounted for.

We've been looking for Kadetsky and several generous Genners checked that
surname all over the Internet, so please don't devote any time to doing that
again, let's just see if FISCHER produces any luck for arrivals of that
family group around that date.

Suggestions are welcome: I'm trying to find out where in Poland (or
wherever) they came >from to go back at least one more generation in Europe,
and exactly when they came over.

Thanks again for all your help!

Cheers,

Jenni Hymoff

To Eilat Gordin Levitan,

I visited your site and found a striking resemblance between the women
on the Bronstein picture and that of the mother of my friend, also nee
Bronstein.

We have absolutely no information on her family. We think she was born
in Poland in the 20s or 30s, her first name is Sosha. Please get in touch
to let me know if I am on the right path.

Thank you so much
Kind Regards,
Helene.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Although this is clearly a private messae to Eilat,
and should probably have been sent to her directly, we are posting it
here as an example of the potential for connection that exists when
we share our family and community information as Eilat has done.
