Deadline for German Jewish History Awards: September 20, 2007 #germany

Arthur Obermayer <obermayer@...>

The German-Jewish Community History Council, GerSIG and the Berlin
Parliament would like to remind you that the deadline for submission of
nominations for the the annual Obermayer German Jewish History Awards is
September 20, 2007. These awards are to be given to non-Jewish Germans
who have made extraordinary contributions to preserving the Jewish
history, culture, cemeteries and synagogues in their local communities.

Thousands of Germans have carried out such activities as volunteers
because they feel it is the right thing to do - the preservation of
Jewish material is one of the few ways in which they can respond
constructively to their country's horrible past. We, as Jewish
genealogists, have been the recipients of their good work. This award
provides Jews throughout the world with the opportunity to recognize and
honor German individuals who, in many cases, have devoted their
lifetimes to such important endeavors.

Many of you previously submitted worthy nominations. Those nominees who
have already received Certificates of Commendation are prime candidates
for this year's awards, and will only require updating of the submissions.

This will be the eighth year for such awards, which will be given on
January 24, 2008. Each awardee and their spouse will be invited on an
all expenses paid trip to Berlin to receive the award at the Plenary
Chamber of the Abgeordnetenhaus, the home of the Berlin Parliament. The
honorees will receive a framed certificate and an honorarium to be used
for the furtherance of their work. Awardees' contributions will be described
to attendees and to the local, national and international news media.

These awards have in the past received extensive coverage in American
newspapers, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Miami
Herald, and the Boston Globe. They have also received coverage by the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the Associated Press, and a great many German
daily and weekly newspapers. Articles in American Jewish weeklies, as
well as numerous overseas newspapers, such as Ha'aretz and the Jerusalem
Post have covered many of the individual awardees. This year's keynote
speaker will be Sara Bloomfield, director of the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

If you know someone who may be appropriate for nomination, further
information -- including the Call for Nominations and profiles of
previous award winners and the jury -- can be obtained at:

http://www.obermayer.us/award.

Cemetery near KRAISK #lithuania

Hello all,

I am aware that there is an old cemetery outside of the shtetl,
KRAISK/KRAYSK. It is not in very good condition, and all of the headstones
are on the ground. Is there any researcher who knows someone who might be
able to visit this cemetery? I am looking for the headstones of my
grandfather, Itzchack Ruderman, his wife, Rachel, and any other family who
might be buried there.

Many thanks, in advance.

Sincerely,

Liz Ruderman Miller

Re: Special request for photographs in TEL AVIV -- re Radomsk, Poland #poland

Merle Kastner asked:

Would there be anyone living in the Tel Aviv area who
would be kind enough to take several photographs of
the building at 9 HULDA STREET in TEL AVIV?
You can find photos of many buildings in Israel at http://zoomap.co.il/
but you need to be able to enter the address in Hebrew characters.

I sent the specific photo to Merle, but this site may be useful for
others.

The Horodok west of Minsk ( less then 30 miles away) was in Poland
between the wars. It is the same Horodok which had a movie taken by
David Shapiro in 1932. I just created a page for the town for
shtetlink;

Chayim Friedman requested a researcher for the archives and for the Jewish
Cemetery in Warsaw. However, you do not need to hire a researcher for the
Jewish Cemetery in Warsaw. The Manager of the Jewish Cemetery can be
contacted directly and he will rapidly send you digital copies of the
Matzevah. Information on the Cemetery can be found at either:

http://www.jri-poland.org/cemetery/warsaw_beisolam.htm
