Leopold VON VOLLENHOVEN #general

Barbara Zimmer

Jim Patrick inquired about Leopold VON VOLLENHOVEN who entered the US aboard the
ship Pennland on 29 March 1927.

By using other sources, you can find more information about Leopold von
Vollenhoven.

First, you need to read the **second page of the manifest for Leopold's entry
into the US, There we find that his father Abraham is living in Cologne and
that Leopold is headed to the "Hebrew Shelter."

At ItalianGen.org we find his marriage in Brooklyn (Kings County) on Feb 6 1932
to Ann PHRWASHEL (probably a bad transcription)

By using Steve Morse's web site we can see that the 1930 census for 34 Hillside
Avenue is enumerated in Enum District 1140. Reading the actual census, we find
that number 34 is a very large apartment building which covers over 4 pages in
the enumeration. But I found no one named Leopold in any of the apartments.

Need help in Russian Jewish community in Brooklyn #general

DAGAG123@...

After years of research I have finally found a POT at Yad Vashem for my
Mother's second cousin - filed in 2000 in Brooklyn, NY. Unfortunately, it
appears that this person has moved or passed away. The phone is disconnected
and I've searched to no avail.

Is there anyone on this list with a connection to the Russian Jewish
Community in Brooklyn who would be willing to help. I can provide the exact
address and info privately.

Thank you,
Desiree Gil

TZIPERSHTEYN/ZIPERSTEIN/SIPERSTEIN/SAPIRSTEIN #ukraine

Hello, it seems that Jeff Knisbacher, >from Baltimore, US, posted here
sometime ago. I tried the e-mail >from one of his posts but It seems it
changed. I'm looking after him because he seems to have connections to
Tzipershteyns/Sipersteins >from Khotin or nearby cities, in Ukraine.
Did anyone talk to him lately ?

Follows the information on my line:

I'm looking for any of the following variant spellings for families
living in USA who might recognize any of the following data:
Tsipershteyn/Ziperstein/Siperstein/Sapirstein

- Origin: Bessarabia, either Moldova, Romania or Ukraine. Cities I am
aware one of them lived (my great-grandmother): Secureni, todays
Sokiryany.

- Names of the ones I am aware did immigrate to US:

Yakov Tsipershteyn z"l married Brani z"l, they are probably >from 1850.
Their offspring:

- Pinye Tsipershteyn z"l
- one of Pinye's children, DAVID, emigrated to US,
married there, and had 2 children, as far as 1982.
- Itzik Tsipershteyn z"l
- Rivka Tsipershteyn z"l (my gg-mother)
- Moishe Tsipershteyn z"l
- Moishe may have married in US, and his child, an
american, got married also in US.
- Iossif Tsipershteyn z"l
- Had 3 children, all of them born in US and 2 of them
married in US, again, as far as 1982.

When I don't mention any name is simply because I don't have them.

Please, I noticed there are several Zipersteins in the white pages,
just to mention, so if this rings a bell to anyone don't hesitate to
reply back.

If a person is crossed off the manifest it means they
did not make the trip. Sometimes those people were
marked NOB. If they were a stowaway or died on board
that is also noted on the manifest. If they were
detained they will be on a list of detainees --
ususally on the last page.

2011 Conference Announcement #belarus

Marlene Bishow

The IAJGS is very pleased to announce that the 31st IAJGS International
Conference on Jewish Genealogy will be held in Washington, DC during the
summer of 2011. This conference will be hosted by the Jewish Genealogy
Society of Greater Washington (JGSGW).

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington draws it membership
primarily >from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. The organizational
meeting was held in November, 1980 and in January, 1981, the first speaker
was Rabbi Malcolm H. Stern, the "Dean of Jewish Genealogy." During the past
28 years, JGSGW has hosted four conferences: 1984, 1988, 1995 and 2003. The
overwhelming success of these conferences bears witness to the society's
ability to put together the best speakers on subjects of great interest to
the Jewish genealogical community and combine it with the fabulous resources
of the Washington, DC area. The IAJGS Conference in 2011 will meet the same
high standards and will surely be worthwhile attending.

See you in DC in 2011!

Most sincerely,

Shipping lists 1870s-1880s #southafrica

Merv & Naomi Barnett

I've long been a member of this group in the vague hope I might find
some of my husband's BARNETT family in South Africa.

The family came >from Alytus/Olita in Kovno with my husband's
ggrandfather and one sister emigrating to Leeds, England in the late
1870s. The name changed >from BERZYNSKI to BARNETT. So far I haven't
been able to find any other BERZYNSKI family in England. I am not
certain of the correct spelling as no doubt it was up to the person
writing what they heard as to how the name was spelled.

Because so many people >from this part of the world (Kovno) emigrated to
South Africa I thought it might be possible that some of this family
settled there too.

My message is really a long shot to see if there are any shipping lists
available for the 1870-1880 period and what information I need to search
them.
