Re: "Gnesha" #general

Don Solomon

My grandmother's name in Ukraine was Genessa, presumably the same as your Gnesha.
It sounds to me like a version of Jeannette. When she came to the US she was known
as Nettie. In Yiddish her name was rendered as Nessie.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if some with that name chose an English name
starting with G or J.

Restoration of the Jewish Cemetery in Raducaneni, Romania #romania

marcelg@...

Restoration of the Jewish Cemetery in Raducaneni, Romania
Marcel Glaskie marcelg@netvision.net.il

In May 2011 Marcel Glaskie >from Ra'anana Israel, initiated the restoration
of the neglected Jewish cemetery in Raducaneni.
This can be seen on the cemetery page of the Raducaneni website, see link:
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/raducaneni/cemetery.html
Six local workers were engaged, the trees and vegetation were cut down and a
large number of grave stones were brushed down to remove the moss that had
grown over the years.
To clarify the fading inscription, white shaving cream was applied to the
lettering, and several hundred photos were taken of the monuments.
A multi lingual sign board made in Israel was fixed to the gates of the
cemetery.
To continue with this project in September 2011, further local workers will
be needed to clear more vegetation and to lift and expose the fallen
monuments, volunteers can then continue with recording the inscriptions.
Multi lingual sign boards will be made in Israel for the Synagogue and the
Jewish school.
If you are interested in this project, please contact Marcel Glaskie
marcelg@netvision.net.il

Rinkovsky Family Migration #general

Pnina and Mike Rothenberg

Hello,
I have been trying to locate information about my grandmother and her six Rinkovsky
sisters migrationg to England in the late 1800's, >from what is now Lithuania, or
possibly >from areas of Russia near Moscow.

Family information is that they ranged in age >from toddlers to nearly 20.
Descendants do not seem to have any information about this. I do not know >from
what port they left mainland Europe for England. Therefore, I am wondering if there
are archives with English immigration, census or other records that could provide
some information about their migration. If so, I'd be interested in learning what
organizations would have this information and how to contact them. Also,
specifically what records to ask for. The parents of the sisters were named Isaac
and Rose, and they never left Europe.Another child, the youngest, was a brother who
stayed behind. Eventually, he joined most of his sisters who had migrated >from
England to South Africa. My grandmother (then married with four sons) eventually
came to the U.S. >from England.

Thanks in advance.Mike Rothenberg

Chuna / Charles ZIMMER Zloczow > Newark NJ #general

Barbara Zimmer

Chuna ?? (later Charles but also noted as Karl or Carl) ZIMMER was born about
1873 to Wolf and Basia Freide Zimmer, probably near Zloczow / Zlochev now in
Ukraine. (4948 2454). He is recorded in Newark NJ city directories before 1900.
Various censuses give his date of immigration as about 1890. I have been unable to
find any record of his entry into the US, but I know he did not swim to the US!
Charles married Rose KAZOFSKY about 1898. The 1900 census shows that he has
already received his naturalization papers.

Various other ZIMMERS arrived in later years including my grandfather, Jacob
Zimmer, who gave Charles' address as his destination on one of his trips to the US.
(Jacob made at least two trips.) Chuna and Jacob were among the six known sons
of Wolf and Basia Freide. (The Jacob Zimmer living with Charles and Rose in the
1900 census is Charles' cousin, not his brother.)

If anyone can find a record of Chuna's entry into the US, please contact me
offlist. I have already tried the various options including other ports along the
Eastern Seaboard of the US and Canada, with no luck so far.

Kovno Gymnasium Yizkor Book Volunteer Translators Sought #general

Susan Goldsmith

Dear Chaverim,

I have come into possession of the Kovno Gymnasium Yizkor Book,(Kaunas, Lithuania),
which I believe is written in Hebrew, although like other Yizkor Books, it could be
a combination of Hebrew and Yiddish. Individuals mentioned in the book came to
teach and study at the Gymnasium >from all over Lithuania.

Are there volunteers who would be willing to help translate the book into English?
It is about 340 pages with many photos. I am already heading up the translation of
the Jonava Yizkor Book and know how difficult it is to raise funds to pay a
translator. That is why I am seeking volunteers for this project.

I am hoping that some talented landsleyt will step forward to translate the Kovno
Gymnasium Yizkor Book. Your efforts will be recognized when we submit the
translation to the JewishGen Yizkor Project. Your families, colleagues and other
researchers will know of your contribution and be forever grateful.

I am hoping that >from the translation, we may be in a position to submit Pages of
Testimony to Yad Vashem for individuals not yet entered into their database of
remembrance.

Please contact me privately if you can help in this effort and indicate whether you
know both Hebrew and Yiddish or one or the other.

Best Regards,
Susan Goldsmith

Skole #galicia

Stuart Ungar

Hi all,

I will be putting a ShtetLinks site together for the town of Skole
soon. This is where my maternal grandmother was born and
lived with her family. Her maiden name was Greenberg (or
Grunberg).

I haven't visited (yet) and would love to hear >from others who
are familiar with the area or have ancestors >from there as well.
I would love to see photos if at all possible.

Thank you,

Hi,

Could someone kindly let me know what information is contained in

I'd really appreciate it as the closest copy of the books to me is over
150 miles away.

This is cross-posted on Gesher Galicia, RavSIG, and JewishGen
