JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Skola - a thank you- !

Thank you so much for all of the emails and responses to my questions for "Skola."
Indeed it has helped! It seems I do need to search in the Ukraine and it is in fact "Skole" and some additional research showed that it was Skola in Yiddish (which would explain whey my grandmother wrote it that way)! After searching the appropriate database, I did find my grandmother Lea Grunberg (Greenberg) and and many of her siblings listed. Her birth date was earlier than we thought... not too much of a surprise since it was believed that she really didn't know her birth date. And, indeed I will join that SIG in hopes to find out even more. Again, i am extremely grateful for all the help. Stuart Ungar

GENI family tree accuracy
#general
Evelyn Filippi
I started a tree on Geni. A cousin not knowing asked me to merge with her and I
lost complete control of my info. Other people that she asked to add info were able to add and not lose control. She offered to take me off and then put me back on so I would have more control but I figure to many cooks spoil the broth, so I just left it the way it is. I started another tree and I will use it just as a back up only. Any mistakes I have are mine and I can deal with it 3 of my PCs crashed within a month. If I didn't have backups on dvds I would of lost everything so I am glad I have another place for my tree Evelyn Filippi New York.

Barbara Jepson
Thank you to all who replied to my request for information re: my
grandparents, Sam (Solman) Belinkie and Fannie Ginsberg. I should have been more specific. I still don't know in which Molgilev Sam was born. My grandmother was born in Konotop. They both told me it was near Kiev. I knew both of them well and stayed with them often. My father, their youngest son, was KIA during WW ll, he was 26, I was 3. I was told not to ask questions because they would have been too sad. I didn't, and, now I realize that it was a mistake. I'm trying to find out "Which Molgilev". Again, many thanks. I will stay in touch. Barbara Belinkie Jepson

Russian Translation Needed - 1868 Suwalki Marriage Supplement Record
#general
ewolfson
Genners:
I have posted on my website a marriage document >from Suwalki in the Russian language >from 1868. My knowledge of Russian is basically non-existant, but I went through all the unindexed marriage supplement records >from this era which exist, looking for a marriage record of a SMORGONSKI relative hoping that something would pop out at me (and hoping there would be a corresponding vital record in Polish, but no such luck). Can someone tell me if I was lucky enough to find the document for which I was searching? I believe there is a surname that would start SMO__ (with the Russian cyrillic CMO) I have a link to the document at my website: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/o/l/Evan-Wolfson/PHOTO/0031photo.html Apologies in advance for the large image. I am only interested in a translation if there is a surname SMORGONSKY. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Evan Wm. Wolfson Pittsburgh, PA

Tdashkin name
#general
Victoria Reed <researchtoldot@...>
Has anyone come across the name "TDASHKIN"? This name was remembered as "VDASHKIN"
but in the 1930 that is how it is spelled. I've tried searching the EIDB for variants of Dashkin - to no avail. Joseph and Julie "Tdashkin" state in that census that they arrived in 1930. Joseph was the brother of a Helen Rubinstein, who was married to a Louis Rubinstein; they both emigrated much earlier. At this point I have no clues as to where this family came >from in Russia. Thanks! I have been able to find on Ancestry (english) regarding SOUCHOT
descendants. However I am unable to find it anywhere else. Help. Dina Souchot Klayman JKLAYMAN@... MODERATOR NOTE: If you have not done so already, you should also search the JewishGen Family Finder at http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ to find if others are researching the same surnames and places. If you create your own entry as well, using the "enter/modify" option, you will make your information available to the hundreds of researchers who search this site each day and will then be able to find you. And please do NOT use your Reply key to respond to messages received in the Digest Mode! Thank you, Moderator on Duty.

Hi all,
I live in the US. I have requested naturalization records for my relative in SA >from the archives and the following was sent to me: "Copies of the relevant documents will be supplied on receipt of an International Bank Draft to the value of R25-00 (R0-80 per page), including postage, drawn on a local South African commercial bank in favour of the PAWC: Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. Payment should be sent to the Head, Western Cape Archives and Records Service......" I would greatly appreciate it if someone would let me know how I can do this.
