Thus far, I know my Great-Grandmother was Anna Eberle and was >from either Germany
or Austria (even possibly Switzerland). Her mother was Lucia Pogetta or Pogetto
Eberle, and Anna's father died when she was little, I don't have a first name on
him. I know Lucia then married a man named Charles Manea (sp?). I know Anna's
father had several sisters and came >from a very wealthy and affluent family. I
would love to find out more info on the Eberle side, or if anyone knows anything
about the Pogettas that would be great as well.

Also, a shot in the dark here, but my mother's family is >from Southern Italy and
their name is Tomasello. I have discovered that Tomasello was at one point a very
common Jewish Italian name in southern Italy, so if anyone knows anything about
that name that would be great also!

I write today because I've just been fortunate enough to find more archival documents for the family I'm writing about, the SPIWAKS of Orgeyev, Bessarabia, who intermarried with the SHAPOSHNIKS (also of Orgeyev) and the SCHOCHETMANS of Odessa.

I need help of two kinds: translation and interpretation.
First: Travel Documents for the SHAPOSHNIKS.
I need help translating and interpreting two travel documents issued in 1923 for the SHAPOSHNIK family, Velvel, Gitel [maiden name SPIWAK], and Perel (7 years old), who had moved >from Orgeyev to Kishinev, and were living in Elizavetgrad when they made plans to emigrate to New York. Their name is spelled SHAPOTCHNIK on their passport. The "Passeport" was issued by the Russian consulate in Bucharest. It is printed in French with Russian seals. I've scanned it in two sections, top and bottom. If people could translate both the contents of the form and the seals, that would be a great help.
Also, on the top left of the passport someone has written the letters "Belg," which I think might be a reference to the fact that they were scheduled to travel >from Antwerp, Belgium. Is there another way to interpret these letters? And can anyone make out the handwriting on the top right of the passport? What might it mean?
At this point, the US had strict annual and monthly quotas, so I am wondering: How hard was it to get a passport to leave in this period? How much would it have cost and how long would this family have had to wait to receive their passport? How common was knowledge of the US quotas in Eastern Europe?

Next: Philadelphia Immigrant Bank Records for the SCHOCHETMAN family of Odessa.
I have just received copies of the ledger sheets for pre-paid steamship tickets purchased for members of the SCHOCHETMAN family of Odessa. I have never been able to find a street address for the family, and hope someone can make out the writing in the far right column on these two records for the same family. The first record is Sam SCHOICHETMAN / SCHOCHETMAN, an older brother living in Philadelphia buying tickets for his younger sister, Sore, and their youngest brother, an infant. The second is Mike Belinsky, Sam's first cousin, with whom Sam is living, buying tickets for two more of Sam's younger sisters, Sossie [Sophie, later SPIWAK] and Udel [Ida].
It looks as if all the tickets were paid for in May of 1905, and ticket numbers, the name of the ship, and planned date of departure are listed on these ledgers pages, but the family did not leave then. I know >from their ship manifest that David and Molly SCHOCHETMAN left with six of their eight children (Sam and a younger brother Louis were already here), departing Hamburg in January 1906 and arriving in New York in February 1906. On the second page of Mike Belinsky's account (not shown here), buying tickets for Sophie and Ida, someone has written "Cancelled," with the date 4/12/05. But the ledger pages were for May 28, 1905. Am I reading the month and day wrong? Was it April 12 or December 4th that the tickets were cancelled? And why would a family who'd lost everything in a pogrom, eager to leave, not have used their tickets? Might it have been because they couldn't get the necessary travel documents in time? Was it common to cancel prepaid tickets for people with as little money as this family? If these tickets were canceled, was the money refunded to the account for later use?

Simcha (Sophie) married Benjamin Woolf in 1902 and they had 4 children as of 1911: Benjamin, Katherine, Jacob and Jack.
Alice Rebecca b. 1877 and Abraham Alfred b.1878 were living with their widowed mother in 1911.
Joseph married his cousin Rachel Abraham Samson Messias in 1906 and as of 1911 had a son Benjamin b. abt 1907 and a daughter born in 1909.
Debora also known as Dora married Barend Barnett (Barney)Sarfaty in 1906 and had 4 children that I know of: Jane who was born and died in 1907, Along with Doug who died in 1940, Mordecai b. 1909 and Esther (Ettie or Hettie)b. 1910 and died in 1996. I maybe be wrong about the husband of Debora.
