Michael asked:

Has anyone found other (free or for pay) services...

www.familysearch.org
LDS' free site

www.fultonhistory.ocm
Free site to search and read old NY digitized newspapers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_online_newspaper_archives
Wiki list of on-line digitzed newspapers - worldwide - broken down by
geographic region.

http://www.donslist.net/PGHLookups/DirM.htm
Free site - some old U.S. city directories

And, don't forget Google Books. They have some old city directories,
Jewish Communal Register, and millions of other books. Search your
ancestors names, or the towns they came from, and you may be surprised.

Both my pgf and pgm emigrated >from Tuchin to NYC at the turn of the
20th century. I have obtained a good deal of information about their
respective siblings who also emigrated, and I am now at the point
where I am beginning to research back into Europe, in particular to
ascertain the family makeup >from whence they came. In particular, I
know that each had a number of siblings who didn't remained back in
Russia and never made it out. I have identified >from jri-poland and
other sources several promising archives, a number of which are "part"
of the ukraine <http://www.archives.gov.ua/Eng/>. Two of these are the
State Archives of Rivne Oblast and of Zhytomir Oblast. Before going
off and emailing or otherwise contacting these sources, I wanted to
check with other members as to advices, experiences, etc that they
have had with either the specific archives mentioned or just obtaining
records >from the Ukraine in general (ie contact them in english or no,
alternate non-governmental sources for Tuchin, level of assistance or
lack thereof that I might expect, etc.). Thank you.

Beth Hamedrash Hagodol (Norfolk Street Shul) on the Lower East Side endangered #poland

Rabbi Ben-Zion Saydman

Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, the first Eastern European
synagogue in the Americas, is in danger of being destroyed. BHH,
built in 1850, is located at 60 Norfolk Street on Manhattan's Lower
East Side. Throughout its 163 years, Beth Hamedrash Hagodol has stood
at the center of American Jewish life. To illustrate, the only Chief
Rabbi in New York history, Rabbi Jacob Joseph, held his office at BHH.
Beth Hamedrash Hagodol served as *the* central address of the immigrant
Jewish community during the latter part of the 19th century and the
early part of the 20th century. The history of BHH is the history
shared by most of us. Though granted landmark status in 1967,
financial and structural problems threaten this major piece of
American Jewish history. Some are trying to tear down this holy
structure to build condominiums. On a personal note, my great
grandfather, Ben-Zion MELTSNER, ztz"l, was President of BHH in1900.
For his sake, I personally wish to raise the level of awareness in our
genealogical community. Spread the word!

If you have family ties to Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagodol and /
or if you would like more information, please contact me privately.
Thank you!
