Length of service in Russian Army #ukraine

barry_helfand@...

What circumstance allowed my maternal grandfather, Yehuda Yankel Ziskrojt, to serve only three years and nine and one half months in the Russian Army?  His military papers indicate he was in the Army >from January 1, 1891 to October 17, 1894 when he was transferred to reserve status.  His reserve duty started December 17, 1894 and was scheduled to end December 31, 1909.  Yehuda Yankel was the eldest of five siblings and began his active duty shortly after his twentieth birthday.

According to Petrovsky-Shtern, in Jews in the Russian Empire, 1827-1917, a statute in 1874 created a legal obligation to serve six years of active duty and nine years in the reserves, except in Siberia where the time periods differed.  There were three types of exemptions for a son who had to support his family but Petrovsky-Shtern does not indicate a length of service, if any.  However, the length of service would be >from six months to eighteen months for university, high school, and grammar school graduates.

Thank you for your help.

News about Odessa #ukraine

Ariel Parkansky

Hi everybody,

You haven't heard about me recently but it doesn't mean that the Odessa projects are in stand by.

On the contrary, the different translation projects advance at a good pace and more translated vital records are added every week to our database.

We have also received new vital records. Some are already published and others will be published soon.

The great news is that a whole new book has been added to our collection:

The Commemorative Book of Schools in Odessa District for Academic year 1913-1914.

It contain two parts:
Part I for Schools depending of the Odessa District
Part II for National Schools
The book  (in Cyrillic) has 586 pages, statistics and names of the students per school.
There's an alphabetical index at the end.

The book is in Cyrillic and I expect in the near future to translate the index as done for the All Odessa Directory of 1902-3.

The project of restructuring the Ukraine SIG website is advancing very well and I expect you'll hear more about it by mid-January.

I'd like to thank all the volunteers that have or are collaborating with the different projects, to all the comments I've received >from you and to those who have donated for the acquisition of new fonds.

Please continue like this, this project cannot be done without your help.

Thanks to all of you.

Pages of Testimony #ukraine

Stephen Katz

On 9 December, Marilyn Levinson wrote about a problem she had experienced in trying to enlarge the image of a Page of Testimony in the Yad VaShem Shoah Victims' Database.  This happened to me once. However, as suggested by the Moderator of this Discussion Group, it was quickly fixed. Nevertheless, if someone experiences the same problem and it persists, the following could be done: right-click on the image, choose "save image as ..." and save it to the drive and/or folder of choice. Once it's been saved, it can be opened, enlarged as necessary, etc.
