JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

New Kherson town and gubernia KheilaLinks website is requesting information.
#ukraine
Charles WALOWITZ
We are in the process of creating a JewishGen KehilaLinks website for the town and gubernia of Kherson, Ukraine.
We would like people who have roots there to submit material for the website. You can submit photos of the town, photos of people born in the town, postcards, and family histories. Also very helpful would be a descriptive narrative mentioning all the generations, who married whom, what they did for a living, where they lived, their migration, documents you may have received >from Kherson, etc. We would be grateful if you will help us "populate" our new website with materials about our ancestral town. If you can help with this, or if you have any other ideas, please write to us directly at ruthw95@.... Charles and Sylvia Walowitz. Brooklyn, New York, USA. Re: Early London Insurance Policies
#unitedkingdom
louisemessik@...
The insurance companies were London-based, but the assets insured could be
anywhere in the UK. We have learned that Sun Insurance policies on provincial properties have the prefix CD ('country districts'), we can filter the policy numbers column to get a fix on them. 2673 out of 25670 entries, ie well over 10 per cent, relate to provincial policies. (And that's not even looking to see if any of the other insurers covered 'country districts' - they probably did.) Ref arsonists: many of the policies contained a Jews Clause. Please see George Rigal's explanation below. from 1813 some policies taken out by Jews had a special Jews clause, whichappeared more frequently as time went on. It appears as the words 'Jews Clause' at the end of the policy or it is given in full, being some variation of 'No goods paid for which are stolen or lost by removal at or in consequence of a fire or alarm of fire'. I do hope that this information is helpful. With thanks to Petra Laidlaw for providing the answers to Jill's posting. Louise Messik, London -----Original Message----- Subject: Early London Insurance Policies From: jill.whitehead@... Could the compilers of the George Rigal data indicate if this information literally only relates to families living in London? As London was the capital city, is it possible that families who lived in other UK cities could have taken out an insurance policy via a company based in London? If this is only London based, are there other sources of information for provincial insurance policies? In my case, I am interested in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Southport, Hull, Grimsby, Sheffield, Middlesbrough, and Harrogate. I have a contact in Chicago who has discovered that his turn- of- the- 20th century ancestor was a Jewish arsonist in Boston who tried to make money from insurance policies. He had an article published in Avoytanu in 2013 onthis topic. This sounds more of an American than UK thing but I am informed that his family's research showed that some Jewish arsonists did operate in London at the time. Jill Whitehead, Sutton, Surrey

Middle name Baraf?
#general
Snillop47@...
I am interested in the possible meaning of a Jewish middle name. The story
starts with a man born in a town in the Ottoman Empire in the 1860s whose middle name was Baraf. He came to England and his first son was born in 1892 and his middle name was also Baraf but none of his other children were given that name. Newspaper reports of the family sometimes print it as B'Araf and Be'Haraf. I can't find anything like it in my Hebrew-English Dictionary, nor in my Yiddish-English Dictionary. Any help? Trying to locate Robert W. Marlin
#general
Natalie & Ernie Hartz
I have been unable to locate the author of "My Sixteen-a self help guide to
finding your 16 great grandparents", Robert W. Marlin. He is related to me through our grandmothers and we had been in contact in the 1990's. He was a professional genealogist who was kind enough to send me his book, in which he shows documents related to my paternal grandparents. He also sent me a copy of a photograph of his grandmother and her niece, Rose Resnick (my grandmother). I have recently come across 9in my now deceased uncle's possessions), a dozen studio portraits of many unnamed individuals (which are >from my paternal side of the family) and one of them matches the copy of the photo Robert sent me. They appear to be >from the approximate time frame of the 1900's. I had hoped that Robert might have similar photos that would help identify the people. have searched Switchboard and White Pages for him and have found someone whose previous addresses match to the ones I knew, but when I call the number, the phone has been disconnected, so I fear he may be deceased. His bio on the book states that he had served at one time on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Orlando. If anyone has any knowledge of Robert (or any of his immediate family members) please contact me off list. If you can offer general information on locating people that would benefit the group, and/or how to identify people from these old studio portraits, please feel free to post to the group aswell. [US] Department of Defense to Preserve Historic Images
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
The Department of Defense's central repository for imagery, the Defense
Imagery Management Operations Center [DIMOC] recently signed a $5 million agreement to digitize, store and provide access to hundreds of thousands of historical images. In addition to its digital archive, the agency has a massive backlog of images on physical, analog media that ranges from photographic negatives and slides to films and VHS tapes which are deteriorating faster than they can offer it to the National Archives. They also have the problem that their climate-controlled facility in Riverside California is running out of space. Regardless of condition, images sent to Riverside are never simply destroyed, because they're federal records. Everything is assessed, barcoded and stored for later digitization. Originally, it was determined that it would take 25 years and $50 million to digitize the current analog holdings with available government resources. Instead they are taking a different approach that will take only 5 years. In exchange for digitizing the images, the contractor, T3Media, will be granted a limited period of exclusivity during which they will be able to charge non-DOD users a fair-market fee to use the images. This is similar to agreements that the National Archives has made with genealogical organizations to digitize some of their holdings. To read the article go to: http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=121516 To access a sampling of the holdings go to http://www.defenseimagery.mil/imagery.html Thank you to Martin Kaminer for sharing the information.
