Dear One and All:

I have learned of a possibility that my great grandfather, Herman
GELB, might have come >from a town / village called Laskow /
Lashkov.

I have tried JewishGen as well as other resources to try to learn
more about this place. But haven't found too much.

Does anyone else have any information regarding Jewish life in
the place?

Thank you,

Jay Lenefsky - Israel

Dear Cousins,

I received an amazing wealth of information >from so many people.
I offer a debt of gratitude especially to Renee, Paul, Debbie, James,
Jesse, and Phyllis. You have all given me plenty of material to
search through. I am very grateful for the additional search
methods and expertise that were so kindly provided. The common
consensus is that Szerov may be any of the following towns:
Dzhurov, Ukraine; Zhuriv, Ukraine; Khyriv, Ukraine; or Szarow,
Poland. I will have many hours of happy hunting ahead.

Warmest regards,

Shari Kantrow

Shalom,

The "Yizkor Books In Print Project" is looking for about 5 volunteers to
help process images for new books to be published. The volunteers should
have Photoshop or similar software to be able to open PDF files with images,
copy and crop the images of photographs, illustrations, maps and create JPEG
files of the individual images, so that they can be inserted into the text
files by our layout volunteers. If you can devote a minimum of an hour or
two a week to help with this project, please contact Joel Alpert,
Coordinator of the Yizkor Books in Print Project whose address can be found
at http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/ybip.html

Background: We are fortunate to have just reached an agreement with the
National Yiddish Book Center in Holyoke, MA and the New York Public Library,
for use of their PDF files of high resolution scanned images of photos and
maps and illustrations of their huge collection of Yizkor Books. This will
insure high quality reproduction of the images >from the original Yizkor
Books.

Re: let's introduce ourselves #bessarabia

Alison Shein <alisonshein@...>

Hello all,

My name is Alison Shein. I am researching several families >from Bessarabia.
My g-g-m, TILA BONARER, was born in KISHINEV in 1865, the youngest of 10
(possibly more) children. She married Volko RESNICK in 1887 and immigrated
to Wichita, Kansas with their children in 1908.

Tila's father was named Duvid Karpil BONARER b. 1820 d. 1890 -- in various
documents on jewishgen, I have discovered that in addition to Kishinev, he
also lived in Faleshty and Romankova. Duvid KARPIL'S father was named Itsko.
Duvid also had at least two brothers - Shimon b. 1797 and Aron b. 1814 and
d. 1853. The BONARER family was very large -- in addition to my gg-gm, Tila,
her brother, Levi AKERMAN and his wife Elka GRINSHPUN and their children
immigrated to the United States and eventually settled near Seattle,
Washington. (one of Levi's grandsons was a movie producer - David L.
LEWIS(1903-1987).

A sister, Rachel BONE (husband Abe), also came to the United States with
their family. Though I haven't yet been able to link him to my family tree
-- I have been told that the yiddish writer Samuel DAIZEL and his son, a
ballet dancer named William VALENTINE, are also related.

My gg-gf, William RESNICK, is more of a mystery. I have been told that
his parents are Asher and Malka GERSHKOVICH but I have not been
successful with my research on them thus far. I also know that when
William immigrated to Wichita, Kansas, he went there with his uncle (who
was actually younger than him), Joe MILLER b. Kishinev.

I have found the Kishinev vital records databases and the revision lists
to be extremely helpful with my BONARER family research. I am currently
volunteering on the SIG's city directory project and I have also done
work on the World Memory Project.
