Rieke NASH: Sydney #general

Miriam Margolyes <yarrawa@...>

Dear Genners,

We have lost of the great genealogists: Rieke was a meticulous
researcher, a powerful speaker, a tireless organiser and one
of the most delightful people you could meet. She and her beloved
husband, Peter, were a focus throughout Australia for genealogy.
Immensely knowledgeable and immensely generous, Rieke provided
hospitality and information whenever she could.

The world genealogical community is very much the poorer for
her passing. She will be remembered affectionately as one of
the icons of our strange community. I mourn her passing and
will always feel privileged that I knew her and had the benefit
of her warmth and wisdom. May her dear soul rest in peace.

Sept. 27 JGSGB presents Phyllis Kramer - "Passenger Manifests and the Immigrant Voyage" #general

Ellie Goldberg

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston (JGSGB) presents
Phyllis Kramer - "Passenger Manifests and the Immigrant Voyage",
September 27 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm, at Gann Academy 333 Forest Street,
Waltham MA.

Many of us have found our immigrant ancestors on the passenger
manifests of the ships that brought them to the U.S. Others among us
are still searching. But even when we find the manifest, it does not
tell the whole story of the immigrant voyage.

Phyllis Kramer will show us how our ancestors got their tickets and
traveled to the ports of embarkation, what documents came with them,
and how U.S. immigration laws affected their lives. She'll also
provide tips on searching for manifests, understanding their notations
and deciphering handwriting.

As JewishGen's Vice-President of Education, Phyllis Kramer created
JewishGen's online learning program and teaches many of its courses.
She is a worldwide lecturer and practicing genealogist who specializes
in Eastern European research. In 2011, she received the award for
Outstanding Contribution to Jewish Genealogy via the Internet >from the
International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. She comes
to us >from Florida where she is a board member of the Palm Beach
Jewish Genealogical Society.

Admission is free for JGSGB members, $5 for non-members. Members are
invited to bring their friends for free to this program. The usual
admission fee for visitors will be waived for members' guests.
Refreshments will be served. More info: www.jgsgb.org

Re: Where is/how to find records for TESTENBERG Germany? #general

Roger Lustig

That may be a capital F, not a T. Festenberg is a town in Silesia that
had a Jewish community in the 18th to early 20thC. It's now in Poland
and called Twardogora.

There were 4 UNGERs in the 1812-1815 naturalization lists for Silesia:
two in Zuelz (Biala Prudnicka) in Upper Silesia, one in Bernstadt
(Bierutow) and one in Oels (Olesnica). Bierutow is about 40 km (25
miles) south of Twardogora; Olesnica is more or less between them. Biala
is well to the south, so I'd start with Moses UNGER of Oels and Salomon
UNGER of Bernstadt.

Twardogora's Jewish vital records 1812-1874 are on an LDS film; the
universal civil records for 1874-1888 are also filmed.
