Menachem-Mendel Zak (Chief Rabbi of Riga?) #rabbinic

lydgateaction <lydgateaction@...>

I am trying to get any information at all about the wife of
Menachem-Mendel Zak (I believe Chief Rabbi in Riga at the time of
WW2) and her family and siblings.

I believe her name was Sheine (?1871--), and that her two youngest
siblings *may* have been Isaac Veger and Bentzion Veger (my Great
Grandfather), and that their father was Gershon Veger.

Looking for a photograph of a Lower East Side building, 1910s #general

Bruce Drake <bruce.drake@...>

This is a shot in the dark, but for years I have been trying to find a
photograph that shows in whole or part the storefront of 10 Delancey Street
on the Lower East Side during the period of 1910-1920. If anyone here has
such a photo that may have been handed down by parents and grandparents,
please respond to me privately.

This address was where my grandfather Samuel Drach had a restaurant listed
in the city directories as "Subway Lunch Room," probably because at one
time, one of the subway lines >from Brooklyn ended there. (Coincidentally --
or not -- I encountered another JewishGen researcher who told me her
grandparents had met each other there). I have tried all the obvious (and
not-so-obvious) places: the NYPL archives, the Municipal Archives, social
media groups organized around old New York photos, the museums, etc. The
closest I've come is an early 20th century photo that shows as far as #8 and
a NYC tax photo >from 1940, long after the restaurant had closed. (In 1940,
it was a bird store).

The building, which dates to 1890 or 1900, is still there (as is #8). It
underwent its ugly periods at street level during the 70s, 80s and 90s, but
now that the whole area is gentrifying, it is now occupied by,
unsurprisingly, a craft beer bar.

Thanks.

Re: Migration patterns from Lithuania to Latvia #latvia

Jon Seligman

Migration between Lithuania and Latvia cannot really be defined as migration
until the 1920s. Neither existed as a national or internal national
division, but were split up into Gubernia (Governates) within the Russian
Empire. Lithuania and Latvia were covered by the Gubernia of Livonia,
Courland, Kovno, Vilna, Vitebsk, Grodno and Minsk. Movement >from one to the
other was constant and was internal movement (much like moving >from state to
state in the US) rather than a national migration that indicated a pattern.

Re: Berko vs Berkir and Holdenberg vs Goldenberg #ukraine

Martha Forsyth

Berkiv looks like a normally-formed patronymic, Marilyn: you take the
father's first name and add -ov (-iv is I believe a Ukraine variant).

G/Holdenberg is also normal for Slavic-languages countries. Russian has
no "H" sound and substitutes "G"; as you move west >from Russia through
Ukraine and to Poland, what in Russian is written with "g" becomes "h".
(So, for example, "Harvard" becomes "Garvard" in Russia, but would be
pronounced "Harvard" in Poland and Ukraine).

Best, Martha

I have obtained some records >from Teofipol. I knew that my ancester's name
was Berko Soifer in Teofipol I found an Ioinya Soifer
with the patronymic Berkiv. .He would be the right age to be the son
of Berko
Is it right to guess that Berkiv is just a variation of Berko?
Also I found a number of Holdenbergs in Teofipol. I looked in Beiders
dictionary of surnames in the Russian empire and found that there was no
"h" used in the Russian alphabet, and instead was directed to look
for the name under the letter "g".

I had many relatives in Teofipol who were named Goldenberg.
Would it be safe
to assume that the Holdenbergs might be Goldenbergs? Thank you for
your help.

what can I do with grave photo #ukraine

dchavis@...

Hi

In May 2015 I traveled to central Ukraine to follow my families trail. I
took pictures of as many gravestones I could in Sokolovka,
Holoskove, Konetspol, Talnoye, and Pervomaysk. Would these be of any value
to people in this SIG? Many are hard to read. Very depressing. Many are
vandalized. If it can be of use, please let me know.

Members of this SIG were very helpful. Thank you.
