Seeking Information about Rohatyner Sokolovar Krauken Untershtging Verein #general

Dear Fellow Geners

My great great grandparents, Issak and Mary YORISH (JORRISCH) donated
a Sefer Torah in the late 1900s to the Rohatyner Sokolovar Krauken
Untershtging Verein located in NY.

I have a copy of the actual contract and this is the name (as cloes
as I can tell).
Anyone know anything about this specific Verein or how I can learn about it?

Thank you
Michael Salzbank

Re Berlin Death certificates prior to WWII #general

Sally Goodman <sbgoody@...>

In response to Michael Salzbank:

I am looking for a death certificate for Alexander FRIMMERMAN, a chazan who
lived and died in Berlin prior to the onset of WWII.
If you do not know where Alexander FRIMMERMAN is buried, write first to The
Jewish Cemetery Berlin-Weissensee and ask them if he is buried there. If he
is, they will send you a packet of information - all that they have for him.
Weissensee is the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. You might also ask for
the names of other cemeteries in Berlin where A. FRIMMERMAN might likely be
buried. The staff at Weissensee is very cooperative. Listed below are some
addresses you might find helpful

NY Records #general

Gloria Bailey <GAB123@...>

In response to the email below, I would suggest that you write again and ask
for the exact citation of the law. Sometimes when people are unsure if they
can do something, they just say no. I have seen the same issue lately
regarding the new "HIPAA" privacy law. Misunderstanding of the law can
cause workers to say no rather than to spend time finding out what they
actually can do.

If it is this privacy law they are referring to, cite your relationship to
the individual in question if it is direct. State law determines who has
rights to an individual's information after they are incapacitated (or
dead). In most states it is the spouse first, then children, etc. You can
look this up most likely on the state legislative web site to see if you
would be in line to have this right.

Alternatively, you might try to find her in a nearby cemetery or in death
records (presuming she never married). Also, I don't know when the 1935 NY
census will be released, but probably soon, and you could look in that to
see if she was there in 1935.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get around NY State rules and get
some information an a former resident at the Rome State School? I tried
the front door ? i.e. writing to the Central New York Developmental
Services Office ? and they are refusing me any information.
I know that one of the family members ? Gussie Cohen ? was born in the
1890s and she was sent away in the 1920s to a home because she was
developmentally disabled. When I searched the 1930 Census I found a Gussie
Cohen about the right age listed as being at Rome State School.
Over a year ago I wrote to them asking if they could confirm if the Gussie
Cohen at the school in 1930 was the daughter of Goodman and Jennie Cohen
and if so could they tell me if she had died at the school or if left the
school at some point after 1930. It took them a year to write me back and
ask for more information. I replied with copies of her birth certificate,
explaining her relationship and the interest in knowing what happened to
her. It took months and they wrote back and said NY State law forbid them
from releasing medical information. I wrote back and said I did not want
medical information and they came right back to me saying no because of NY
law.
So am I totally out of luck? Any other way to get information if the State
refuses me everything?

Pardubitzer Herrschaft - Jewish landownership in 1793, Part 3 #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

In the last posting I wrote: Low Jacob MAUTNER sounds
even more exalted - for he lives in the Schloss
[castle] itself! He has the distilling concession and
owns "188 Metzen Ackern" of Wiesen [meadows].

I have rarely, if ever, come across quantified land-
ownership in the Bohemian Jewish census of 1793 and
must now scour it for more entries.

I did however come across these interesting reference
about Bisenz and Goding [Moravia]: In the time of the
Margraves .... [ca 15th century] the Bisenz Jews must
have enjoyed great privileges.... for they were
permitted to own vineyards, it as it was very
important to the Margraves to market their wine
through the agency of Jewish traders. Similarly,
between 1648 and 1661 large vineyards and cellars in
the villages in the vicinity of Goding were owned by
wealthy Jews. - see Jewish Encyclopedia under
*Bisenz* [Bzenec] and *Goding* [Hodonin]:

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/index.jsp.

The only other entry for the Pardubitzer Herrschaft is
Raachel [sic] BAUMANNIN, a widow living in Semin.
She was without Schutz [protection] and owned a
distillery. Her sons, all single, in birth order were
David, Joseph and Moyses, she had two daughters: Sara
and Rebecca and the luxury of a maid, Suhanna [sic].
As well as her distillery Raachel owned a meadow of
"30 Metzen in Area" - the actual words in the census.
This meadow, it is stated, was used for cattle
grazing.

This was indeed a surprising piece of information to
me as I thought that Jews in Bohemia, and Moravia, of
that era, were generally not allowed to own land.

In these days of unified euro measure: liters,
kilograms, hectares etc - where the imperial measures
such as our UK/US gills, pints, quarts, gallons,
ounces, pounds etc are now antediluvian, it was an
eye-opener to see listings of old measures used in the
Habsburg Empire. Not only were there dozens of
different areas, lengths, weights and measures, but
they varied by district - eg Bohemia, Moravia, Tyrol,
Silesia, Trieste, Venice, Lombardy and Hungary all had
different standards. I particularly like the Hungarian
measures in the first listed URL - what a nightmare
and source for confusion [see references below].

How much land was involved? This is a bit of a puzzle:
*Area* is obviously area in English. *Ackern* means
"area" in archaic German and it can also mean fields/
meadowland. *Metzen* appears to be a measure of volume
- perhaps how much grain is produced on that area of
land. But in the third URL there is another clue:
1 osterr. Metzen Aussaat = 1/3 Joch = 0.191821 ha
(Metze = Czech: merice)

We read in reference 3: Joch, also Morgen, is an old
field measure [Jugerum in Latin] where one Joch was
the area of field that could be ploughed by a pair of
harnessed oxen (= Joch) in one day (>from 6 a.m to 6
p.m., this period was originally one morning = Morgen
= Czech: jitro).

So apparently MAUTNER's 188 Metzen is equivalent to ca
37 hectares [ca 92 acres] and BAUMANNIN's 16 Metzen
for grazing is equivalent to just over 3 hectare [ca 8
acres]. This seems a substantial amount of land, when
I compare it with the minute back-gardens of my own
KOHN family in Grossbock, Koniggratzer Kreis, Bohemia
in the 1700s. They were surrounded by acres of fields,
but I presume were not allowed to own any land.

Has anyone any further details of landownership in
late 1700s Bohemia and Moravia in their family, to add
to this discussion?

research progress on REICH and LAUFER #austria-czech

Cnydorf@...

Dear Austriaczechsiggers
As I mentioned in my re-introduction, I am researching my gggf Jakob
LAUFER (d. 1887) and his son-in-law Wilhelm REICH (ca 1823-1903).
To this effect, I have started studying some very small photographs, each
a little more than 2X3 inches, that were sent to my ggm by a first cousin
in the 1930's.

One shows the house of Jakob LAUFER and his family in Potworow
(I don't know the current name of this village). It looks like a typical
village family house but perhaps someone can suggest how I might get more
out of looking at it.

The other photos are of family graves in Rabenstein (Rabstejn) which
is near Potworow and Dereisen (Zderaz) which is near Koleschewitz
(Kolesivice) where the REICH family lived.

The most legible photo shows the grave of Wilhelm REICH in Dereisen
and reveals that he was the son of Henokh Eliyohu. I was able to read it
fairly easily with an ordinary magnifying glass.

A much harder problem is posed by a photo that squeezes in both
the graves of Jakob LAUFER and his wife Susanna. Both have very long
inscriptions. I tried having the photo enlarged photographically and made
little progress. But I have had something of a breakthrough by using a
binocular microscope (the Nikon Naturescope) which gives a sharp magnification
of 20X. So far I have found that Jakob LAUFER is the son of Harov Binyomin
Yehuda Ha-cohen. Unfortunately the stone of Susanna is proving even harder
to read but I have not given up.

The lesson >from this is that these little photos can contain a
tremendous amount of detail! If anyone knows how I can find out anything about
Henokh Eliyohu REICH (probably born between about 1760 and 1800) or
Rabbi Benyomin Juda Ha-cohen LAUFER (probably born between 1740 and 1780)
please let me know.
