JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Regarding information on Vilna area Jews and the Holocaust, one should not
forget the important work performed by the Russian Extraordinary Commission. I visited the Holocaust Museum a few weeks ago and came away with several items as follows: 1. Lists of Vilna Jews recorded by the commission in Fond RG-22 Film 19 2. Lists of primarily Lithuanian Jews sent to Estonia for extermination found in Fond RG-22 Film 22 or 23. 95% of the names in this list were >from Vilna. Film 19 contains lists for all of Lithuania and are categorized by uyezd [district]. Some entries are handwritten, others are typewritten but not good enough to scan [I tried with no luck]. There are other, smaller lists I came away with however, these are the primary sources I was able to acquire. Joel Ratner Coordinator, Vilna District Research Group

Scholar Searching for Sephardic/Canary Island Manuscripts
#latinamerica
Roger L. Martinez <roger.martinez@...>
Dear Latin American SIG:
I am contacting the listserve today to seek any kind assistance anyone may be able to provide in the location of several critical historical manuscripts relating to the Sephardic Diaspora >from Spain during the 15th through 18th centuries, specifically a small collection manuscripts >from Spanish Inquisition in the Canary Islands. My hope is that if I can locate and access these records, I will be able to make a small, but important contribution to the history of the lives of Sephardic Jews as they migrated to the Americas and England. Specifically, I am attempting to locate the current provenance of this fragmentary collection of Spanish Inquisition manuscripts >from the Canary Islands >from 1499 to 1700 that were previous held in the collection of the Scottish Marquess of Bute, but were sold at Sotheby's Auction House in London on 30 October 1950. These invaluable records, detailing a critical period of movement of Sephardic Jews from Spain to England and the Americas, were sold to a person or an organizationin the United States. After communicating with the archivist for the Marquess of Bute and Sotheby's about these manuscripts, I have only learned that these documents were sold to, Driscoll, America. For your information, my name is Roger L. Martinez (roger.martinez@mail.utexas.edu) and I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin that is currently conducting dissertation research on a Sephardic Jewish and converso family in Spain, Portugal, England and the Americas. Specifically, I am investigating the 500-year lineage of the Spanish Carvajal Family >from 1200 to 1700. As an academic historian that is entirely dependent on primary documents to reconstruct the history of this family, I have traveled extensively to archives in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and the United States to access critical historical manuscripts. Unfortunately, these travels have not yielded information on these vital Inquisition records >from the Canary Islands and they now appear to remain in the hands of a private collector or institution. Similarly, my own research searches of the Jewish history collections in libraries and archives in the United States have turned up no information on these manuscripts. Should anyone have any knowledge about the current location of these manuscripts, I would greatly appreciate an email note with that information. In closing, please know that I will carefully abide by any requests for privacy and anonymity >from those persons and organizations that provide me details relating to these manuscripts. My only purpose for locating these records is to restore to our modern view those precious lives that for now remain lost. Thank you for your kind attention to my inquiry. Respectfully, Roger L. Martinez roger.martinez@mail.utexas.edu

I have a copy of a leaflet promoting a performance at cafe "Nowoczesna" in
the Warsaw ghetto where my aunt Anna FISCHER performed on Sunday, February 9th, 1941. Also on this same leaflet is mention of Wladyslaw Szpilman appearing on February 6th. My friend sent me a copy of this leaflet and said he found it in Adama Czernikowa dziennik getta warszawkiego ( Adam Czernikowa Diary from Warsaw Ghetto), PWN Warszawa 1983, p. 244. Perhaps there is moreinformation on the Sztuka cafe in this book. I do not know the address of this cafe, but I do know my grandparents Herman FISCHER and Liza BARSKA FISCHER and their daughter Anna lived on Lezno Street. They were all active in the Yiddish Theatre in Warsaw. If researcher 196209 would like a copy of this leaflet, please respond directly to me. Talmud Torahs in Brownsville founded by R' Hirsch BORNFELD
#rabbinic
Logan J. Kleinwaks
A relative of mine, R' Hirsch BORNFELD (1828 or 1829-24 Oct 1924,
NYC) of Rohatyn, Galicia, son of David Moses BORNFELD and Anna TANNENBAUM, supposedly founded several Talmud Torahs in Brownsville after his immigration c. 1905. I would like to locate documentation supporting this claim or otherwise related to R' Hirsch BORNFELD, and would appreciate any suggestions. He was Chassidic, but I do not know whom he followed; possibly, Stratyner, owing to proximity to Rohatyn. He is buried in a plot of the Society Chaim Berlin at Mount Judah Cemetery in Queens. Thanks very much and best regards, Logan Kleinwaks kleinwaks@alumni.princeton.edu near Washington, D.C.

Washington DC marriages performed by M.A. Horwitz--Help, please!
#belarus
David Gordon
Over the past seven years or so, I have tried to publicize the stack
of original marriage licenses and certificates I inherited >from my great-grandfather, Moses Aaron Horwitz, so that I could return the originals to their families. He performed hundreds of marriages in Washington, DC, >from about 1912 to 1935. The project has been quite successful and I have returned hundreds of documents over the years. Unfortunately, when my hard disk was recently erased, one of the few unrecoverable files was my complete list of every document I returned and information about the person who requested it. This information has proved extremely valuable in putting families in touch with each other when, unbeknownst to each other, different people in the extended family requested the same items. I am writing now to ask the help of anyone who ever received a license or certificate >from me. In order to continue to help serve everyone, would you please take a moment to write me (private, of course) with the following bits of information: the names of the bride and groom, the approximate date I sent it it you (if known), and--most important of all--your contact information (address AND e-mail). I have never shared this information with anyone except others requesting the same exact documents and will never do so. I cannot emphasize how truly valuable having this information has been. If you are grateful for the small service I provided, I will in turn be most grateful to everyone who replies--privately--to me.=20 Thank you so much. New Yiddish Material on my Web Site
#yiddish
Steven Lasky <steve725@...>
Greetings all,
Months ago, I announced the creation of my first web site, a virtual (Internet only) museum of Jewish family history. I described what the site consisted of and asked if anyone had any material/family photographs relating to our Jewish families in the Yiddish theatre and vaudeville that I could use on my site, and got a minimal response. I am writing to you now to tell you that I have revamped my site and have now included some material that might be of interest to you. You can visit a small exhibition that honors the Fischer family, who once acted in Yiddish theatre in Warszawa, most of whom perished in the Shoah. I have written a review of the Molly Picon movie "Yidl mitn Fidl." I also have online a short story, "In the Polish School," originally written by Szoel Frydman (nom de plume Leib Rashkin) in Yiddish in the 1930s and published in the Yiddish newspaper "Shtern" in 1940. It is available for viewing on my site in both English and Hebrew. All can be accessed through the Site Map. Be sure to use the slightly altered URL shown below my signature to get to the newest version of my site. Enjoy! Steven Lasky www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/main.htm Moderator's Note: Be advised to carefully read the Image Use Policy when contributing material to this, or any, website.

That was about the time when Jews, entered this area with the Roman occupiers as merchants, camp followers, etc. The Alemanni were a European group, not Jews, Hebrews, Judeans, or Middle-Eastern. It is quite likely that some Jews who accompanied the Romans took local wives; some of these wives may have been Alemanni, and others Goths, Franconians etc. Levites are Jews descended >from Jacob's son Levi. Descent is exclusively in the direct male line. There is no way your female ancestors could have been Levites, even if they were of 100% Jewish descent. I would be interested to know the basis or evidence for your supposed Alemanni descent. Family memories? Birth certificates? Tombstones? DNA? In any event, there can be no Levite connections to Alemanni tribes, any more than to Incas or Esquimeaux. Michael Bernet, New York MBernet@aol.com [Private replies only]
