Re: English equivalents of Roumanian given names #general

Stan Goodman <SPAM_FOILER@...>

On Wed, 12 Jul 2006, rochelle@wifunds.com (Rochelle Kaplan) asked:

I just learned that a cousin married a Roumanian and found her family on
EIDB, arriving 1903.

Names were: Hermann, Hence, Perl, Sise, Perko and Tuli Wolf. They were
going to see son and brother, Moritz Wolff. The family was >from Bacau.

I can't find family in A****.com, or Moritz on EIDB. Perl became Pauline.
What would be English equivalents of these names?

Any suggestions appreciated.
You may be able to realize the futility of seeking "equivalents" to these
names if you notice that the woman originally called "Perl" became "Pauline"
after her emigration. The name "Perl" has an obvious English equivalent,
namely "Pearl", yet she preferred for her own good reasons to elect
"Pauline", which has nothing to do with "Perl". There is no reason that each
(or any) of these Romanian names should have a translation, familiar or
otherwise, to English. The lexical meaning of many, perhaps most, European
names is lost in antiquity (or at least unknown to all but academic
specialists), because many of the peoples and languages that originated them
are also gone.

Your "Moritz" name is the "equivalent" of English "Maurice", of course. And
for all one can know, that's what he was called in the US. It is also
possible that he chose to call himself "Max" or "George".

Re: NYC Death Index/Wilhelmina KORN #general

Joy Rich <joyrichny@...>

I searched Steve Morse's http://stevemorse.org/vital/nydeath.html and got this
result on IGG's italiangen.org:

Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate# County Born
Kuhn Wilhelmina 999y Dec 30'21 1922 29 Queens 922 - 923

A search of italiangen.org directly gave this result:

Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate# County Soundex
Kuhn Wilhelmina 999y Dec 30'21 1922 29 Queens K500

Either a data entry or OCR error in the IGG database caused her age to appear as
999 years. That error forces Steve's program to miscalculate her birth year
because his program subtracts age >from death date. The error isn't that the
birth year results in a miscalculated age but the other way around.

From: "Sharon R. Korn" <s.r.korn@sbcglobal.net>

Thanks to the many people who have made suggestions to help with my search
for the death certificate of Wilhelmina KORN, who died in 1922. In the
course of looking for possible misspellings of her name, a listing turned up
for a Wilhelmina KUHN who died in December 1921. The NYC Death Index has a
typo which estimates her date of birth as 922-923 rather than 1922-1923,
resulting in her age showing as 999 years. In a previous search, my
great-grandfather Jacob JACOBSON's age was listed on his death certificate
as 56 rather than 66, so the death index was wrong for a different reason.
(The tombstone was right.) If you don't have success searching with a
person's age, you might want to eliminate that >from your search.>>

Yiddish Theater Material for Book #yiddish

Lawrence J. Epstein <epsteil@...>

Hi. My name is Larry Epstein. I'm the author of various books on Jewish
life including "The Haunted Smile: The Story of Jewish Comedians in
America." Currently, I'm writing a book about Jewish immigrants on the
Lower East Side. The book will be published by Jossey-Bass/John Wiley &
Sons and co-published by the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Arthur
Kurzweil, the eminent writer and genealogist, is the editor of the book.

I am currently seeking material >from the 1880-1920 era, and I'm hoping that
some members of the Yiddish Theater and Vaudeville Research Group might
have pertinent photographs, theatrical posters, and other items.

Please let me know if you do have such material and are willing to allow it
to be published. Unfortunately, there is no budget to pay for these
materials.

I can be contacted at epsteil@sunysuffolk.edu, and I thank you.

My grandfather, a US citizen, was living and working in Cuba in 1932 when he
died suddenly. My grandmother, along with my mother and uncle, returned to
the US with his body for burial.

Could anyone tell me whether any report of my grandfather's death would have
been made to the US State Department, and if so, is it possible to obtain a
copy of that report or any other information?

Unless you believe a response would be of general interest, you can reply to

Thank you for any assistance.

Searching CAHN from Denver - descendants of Bessie Cahn and Sophie Cahn #general

Martin Cahn <martin@...>

My grandfather's cousin, Bessie F. Cahn was born in 1895 in Denver. She married
a Kaufman and was living in Denver in 1988 when her brother Leonard died. I
cannot trace her. Does anyone know her family by any chance? By now it is likely
we are talking about grandchildren since I think she died in 1994 aged 99.

Her sister Sophie J. was also alive aged c 23 in 1920. I have no idea what her
married name was or where she lived or was buried, but she apparently didn't
make it to 1988. Has anyone come across her or her family by any chance?

With all the best

Searching: Chava COHEN, daughter of Musician Kurt Cohen - emigrant from Tel Aviv #general

Martin Cahn <martin@...>

Chava Cohen, daughter of Musician Kurt Cohen - emigrant >from Tel Aviv

My grandfather's cousin Kurt Cahn emigrated to Palestine in 1935 and married
a Pnina Merom - transforming his name to Cohen. He had a daughter Chava who
emigrated to the US at some point - Kurt died in 1970 and is buried in Tel
Aviv.

Can anyone trace Chava (unknown married name) by any chance. It appears that
Kurt was a musician and it would really interest me if anyone know anything
about him - since his cousin, my grandfather Martin, was also very musical.

Searching for GREENBURG/GREENBERG Prussia/NYC/Boston #general

Carolyn Lea <clea@...>

I have mostly given up on trying to locate any info on my gg-grandfather
Schwarzbaum's sister. The only info I had to go on was his obit (1897) which
identified a surviving sister, Mrs Greenberg, living in Boston. I have also
found a record for an Ernestine Schwarzbaum (commercial site) that came over
in 1851 - the same year as his brother, Moritz. I ordered the ship record
and they were listed on the same line - her name written above his -
illegibly!

I had given up on finding an Ernestine Greenberg in Boston in the correct
age range (b abt 1923 or so). When researching my Lewinsohn's I found that
my ggg-grandmother Ernestine was listed as Esther on about half of the birth
records (>from Elbing, West Prussia). The names were used interchangeably -
that is, her name is shown as Esther on one, then Ernestine on the next
birth, then Esther, and so on. I have just found an Esther Greenburg in the
1860 and 1910 census records. The birth year would be correct (I can only
est. >from brothers) and her place of birth is given as Prussia (my
Schwarzbaums were >from Posen). She is married to a Henry Greenburg, also b
Prussia, and is shown w/ 3 children in 1860 - Isaac, age 5, Clara, 5 mo. and
one name I can't make out that is mistranscribed - abbreviated in census.
They are in Boston but the children are listed as born NYC.
In 1910 Esther is listed with Clara and Isaac (both single) as a widow. Her
year of immigration is given as 1858 but this would not match with her
children being born in NYC - so is wrong.

So far I have not found them in the intervening years. I am wondering if I
should pursue this line of research - how common was using Esther/Ernestine?
If this is the right person the daughter would share a name with Ernestine's
mother and Isaac is her brother's name. Does anyone recognize this family
from their own research? If anyone has access to images of census records
and wants to make a guess at the other child's name that might help.
Unfortunately the 1910 census indicates she had 4 children but only 2 were
living. Still it might help find the intervening records. Unfortunately the
logs >from these early births in NYC that I have found do not give maiden
name for the mother. All suggestions are welcome. I have not done any work
in Boston other than census searching. Are their web sites that list deaths
such as Italiangen for NYC? Would a death certificate include maiden name?
Isaac and Clara are both shown in the 1920 census w/o Esther (both single)
w/last name misspelled.

Searching for GOLDSTEIN - NYC #general

Carolyn Lea <clea@...>

I have been fortunate to have had an unusual name (Schwarzbaum) for much of
my family research. If they had only married men with uncommon names I might
be able to find them. Sophie SCHWARZBAUM married Salomon GOLDSTEIN on 30 Dec
1888. According to the certificate Salomon (written Salomo but his signature
says Salomon) was 28 years old as was Sophie. His place of birth is given as
Wielern Russ. Polen and his parents were Joseph Goldstein and Auguste
Kantrowitz. They married in NYC (performed by Abraham Newmark). I have been
unable to locate them in census records. The one death record I ordered for
a Sophie (a guess) was not her. In census records prior to marriage Sophie
is listed as 1 in 1860, 12 in 1870, and 19 in 1880 (all Manhattan). Sophie
is the daughter of Isaac Schwarzbaum and Pauline Mozart (sp?).

I have tried searching first names only, etc w/o any luck. Hopefully someone
