Subcarpathia SIG #Subcarpathia 1930 Czech census and research recommendation #subcarpathia

H. Shapiro <gumshoe2@...>

My wife's grandparents had a Jewish but not a civil marriage in the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a result, their children used the surnames of
the mother rather than the father. I can't find them listed in the 1930
Czech census in their town of residence. Does anyone know if such people
were allowed to be listed in the 1930 Czech census? Did Jewish people in
the Subcarpathian region try to avoid being listed in the 1930 census to
avoid the draft, taxes or for other reasons? If they were listed, were they
usually listed under the mother's or father's surname?
Also, can anyone recommend a researcher for the archives in Uzhgorod?

Thanks,
Howard Shapiro

Thanks to all who sent messages to the list and to me personally, in
response to my question re. earlier records (than 1864) for
Brzezany/Berezhany, etc. I've now ordered the corresponding LDS film
online and am looking forward to going through it.

The All Galicia Database has been updated (December 2011) #poland

Asparagirl <asparagirl@...>

Gesher Galicia is happy to announce that the All Galicia Database
(the AGD) has just been updated with new content. This is Gesher
Galicia's free public online multi-database search engine, available
at http://search.geshergalicia.org/ .

The following new databases have just been added:

- Grodek Jagiellonski School (1916) -- (now Horodok, L'vivs'ka oblast,
Ukraine)
- Husiatyn School (1912) -- (now Husiatyn, Ternopil'ska oblast,
Ukraine)
- Jaroslaw School (1919-1921) -- (now Jaroslaw, Subcarpathian
Voivodeship, Poland)
- Kalusz School (1911) -- (now Kalush, Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast, Ukraine)
- List of Rabbis in Galicia (1868)
- Nadworna Tax List (1932) -- (now Nadvirna, Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast,
Ukraine) -- our first tax list!
- Tarnobrzeg School (1915) -- (now Tarnobrzeg, Subcarpathian
Voivodeship, Poland)
- Tlumacz School (1920) -- (now Tlumach, Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast,
Ukraine)
- Zolkiew Jewish Death Records (1855-1870) -- (now Zhovkva, L'vivs'ka
oblast, Ukraine)

You might have noticed that a number of these new datasets are
transcriptions >from early 20th Century school records >from Galician
public schools. We'll have an e-mail update sent out soon about where
these new records came from, and how you may be able to find similar
school yearbooks for your own Galician towns of interest. The good
news: the original record sources were typed/printed (not
handwritten), they're already online, and they're out of copyright and
freely available! More details soon...

There were also major updates / record additions to these existing
databases:

- Lviv Jewish Birth Records (1805-1868)
- Lviv Jewish Death Records (1805-1870)
- Lviv Jewish Marriage Records (1801-1860)
- Zbaraz Jewish Birth Records (1815-1876; 1897; 1899) -- (now Zbarazh,
Ternopil's'ka oblast, Ukraine)
- Zbaraz Jewish Death Records (1804-1858; 1894-1907; 1912-1942) --
(now Zbarazh, Ternopil's'ka oblast, Ukraine)

Note that updates to the Lviv birth, marriage, and death records
databases are ongoing and will continue throughout 2012.

And there were minor updates to this existing database:

- Mielnica Jewish Marriage Records (1858-1876) -- (now
Mel'nytsya-Podil's'ka, Ternopil's'ka oblast, Ukraine)

There were also some code tweaks behind the scenes to improve the
loading time of the AGD website. (In geek speak, the PHP files are
now gzipped and I added some new .htaccess rules to manage "expires"
headers.)

This brings the current record totals for the All Galicia Database to
192,268 records >from 60 different data sources. Profound thanks go
out to all the transcribers, project managers, data donors, and
financial donors who helped make this database possible!

This will be the last content update to the All Galicia Database for
2011. We'll pick up with not only more content updates, but also some
very exciting new website features in early 2012. The source code
powering the website will also be released to the public in January
2012 as a new downloadable open source software project, so that other
organizations (or individuals) wishing to use or adapt the software
for their own projects may do so -- free! More details will come next
month.

I'm also happy to announce that I will be presenting a session on the
AGD code at the 2012 RootsTech genealogy/tech conference, which will
be held in Salt Lake City >from February 2-4, 2012. The talk is
formally entitled "Building an open source genealogical search engine
with Apache Solr" and it's on the developer track. I am hoping to
hear soon whether or not it will be livestreamed and/or video
recorded.

A very happy Hannukah and happy new year to everyone!

A new website which has just become available for Manchester cemetery
records is -
http://www.mdcs.org.uk/searchburials.aspx

Initial basic searches are free and you can get the first name, the surname,
the year of death and the name of the cemetery. For more information you
will need to click on the "view" option which is pay-as-you-go. This is
not cheap and in some cases there is very little extra information
available. The database holds about 30,000 records and is not
comprehensive - it is a "work in progress" according to the webmaster. If
anyone has a problem and needs to contact the webmaster, send me an e-mail

Subject: FW: GRUN ; GOLD ; MAURER ; STARYSOLER

My great-grandmother was Ruchel Kreince GRUN (1858-1936) married to
Chaim STARYSOLER (1856-1890) >from Tarnopol, Austria/Poland.
She came to London with her 3 children after her husband died c1891.
She stayed briefly with her sister Rebeka (1859-1901) and her husband
Max GOLD (1862-1919) and their family.
I have Ruchel (Rachel) father as Naftaly Hirsch GRUN with 2 different sets
of dates (1823-1879 and 1891-1970). The second set of dates are obviously
wrong, possibly belonging to a different Naftaly Hirsch Grun. Unless of
course I have the name of her father completely wrong! I do have her mother
as Leah MAURER (1878-?). On her UK ID card, Rachel gave her father as
Nathan GREEN. I do not know why she anglicised his name as I have no proof
that he ever came to London.
Can you clear this up for me and possibly give me brothers/sisters or
parents for Naftaly Hirsch Grun?
I have dozens of other Grun's I have located, but cannot link them up with
my tree!
Many thanks

I have two different trees. The one I can directly ascend to >from myself is

I have another tree with dozens of males and some members of their families

I am sure there are brothers and sons who link them up, but I can't find it!

Also, in that tree, we have two different SAMUEL'S : STARYSOLLER (1874-?)
who married twice and took his 2nd wife (his first wife's sister) plus many
children to New York (c1911). The other Samuel is STAROSOLER (1876-?) with a
different named wife who also went to New York.

They are both linked to CHAIM WOLF STARISSOLER (1858-1911) who was the son
of SCHULIM HIRSCH.

Question:
The STARSOLLA'S (or any similar spellings) >from TARNOPOL AUSTRIA]/POLAND

Can anyone link-up SUSSIE STARISSOLER (1831-1876) or descendents with
SCHULIM HERSCH STAROSOLER (1814-1879) or his descendents?

I have two different trees. The one I can directly ascend to >from myself is
to SUSSIE with only 6 males and some members of their families.

I have another tree with dozens of males and some members of their families
in the SCHULIM HERSCH tree.

I am sure there are brothers and sons who link them up, but I can't find it!
