JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

New edition of JewishGen Success! Stories
#ciechanow

Phyllis Kramer
JewishGen resources played an important role in these three
inspirational stories. You can access these accounts >from the "About Us" button on our website or by following this link: http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen/testimonials/ **Meyer Denn reminds us that time is running out for parents and children and brothers and sisters who were torn apart by the Holocaust to be reunited. He tells the story of a little girl who was placed in an orphanage in Russia in 1941, the father who never stopped searching for her, and the cousins who reunited the family after 75 years. **Paul Howard had successfully researched the family history for his adoptive family, the only family he knew. When he learns that adoption records were being made available to adoptees in Ontario, he sets off on a quest to learn about his biological roots. **Peter Vanlaw knew little about his actress cousin Eva Baruch. Through his research, Peter learns about Eva's fascinating life, including her narrow escapes >from Germany to Shanghai in 1938, from Shanghai to Australia in 1941 only days before the Japanese closed off the city, and >from East Berlin to the West just before the East Germans erected the wall. JewishGen volunteers (Editor - Nancy Siegel and Webmaster - Colin Mathias Justin) collect and post these stories. We encourage you to submit your own success stories to us at success@lyris.jewishgen.org . Phyllis Kramer, NYC & PBG, Florida VP, Education & Special Projects, JewishGen, Inc.

Yizkor Book Project, September 2017
#ciechanow
#poland
Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>
Shalom,
During the period of the High Holidays, many of us were quite busy in many other directions and still are, as it happens, as we enter the first days of Sukkot. I believe that as these holidays are frequently family occasions, our thoughts often return to our roots, thinking about the families >from our past, contemplating about how these holidays were celebrated a generation or so ago. This, in my opinion, is where the Yizkor books come in, providing us with an unparalleled insight into how, in the past, these holidays were celebrated in the various communities. The Yizkor books, in addition, provide us with unique information about all aspects of these communities. The problem? The stories and the information in these books are in languages not all of us know to read - mainly, Yiddish and Hebrew. It is here that the Yizkor Book Project comes into play, unravelling the text by translating it into English. Of course, we also translate into other languages to also allow non-English readers access to this material. This past month, for instance, we added in translations into Hebrew of the Yiddish articles >from the Przytyk Yizkor book, kindly presented to us by Esther Weinschelbaum. It should be noted that all the material in the Yizkor Book site is made freely available worldwide but in order to undertake the translations in the first place, we do need the financial support to pay for their professional translation. We are continually looking for such support in order to continue our mission and if you are able to assist, to any degree, to one of Translation funds, a link is provided at the end of this report to the list of projects. #Ciechanow #Poland New edition of JewishGen Success! Stories

Shalom,
During the period of the High Holidays, many of us were quite busy in many other directions and still are, as it happens, as we enter the first days of Sukkot. Your donation will not only benefit you and your family but also so many others with roots in the same communities. And now for details of all the updates and additions that were carried out in the Yizkor Book Project in September. Tarnow Jewish Cemetery restoration and transcription projects
#galicia
Howard Fink
Now that the long-awaited Tarnow Jewish Cemetery restoration project is
about to formally start I would like to provide details that have not been made public while agreements were being finalized by the project consortium. There are several parts to this major project, overseen by Adam Bartosz, the long-time Chairman of The Committee for Protection of Jewish Heritage in Tarnow. Work on the restoration of the cemetery grounds is already taking place under his direction, and a sample number of gravestones were photographed and indexed last year by Professor Leszek Hondo of Jagiellonian University and the Antyschematy Foundation. Funding is >from a combination of public donations and a European Community Grant. I am pleased to announce that the photographing and transcription of the thousands of gravestones will be carried out by the prestigious Foundation for Documentation of Jewish Cemeteries (FDJC), a key partner in the Tarnow Cemetery project. JRI-Poland has been keeping up with the development of this project through our close cooperation with the FDJC co-founder, Witold Wrzosinski. For Mr. Wrzosinski's remarks on the importance of our collaboration, please see: http://cemetery.jewish.org.pl/page/p_sponsors The FDJC will index and photograph every legible grave marker in the cemetery, including those already included in the sample project. The EU grant requires that a single organization perform this work on the entire site in a consistent manner. JRI-Poland has collaborated with The Foundation since 2014 to make their data available to the widest audience as well as to utilize the multi-faceted JRI-Poland search engine options to dramatically increase the potential for finding gravestones of interest to researchers. The personal details in the JRI-Poland search results will include a link directly to The Foundation's high quality images, which will include GPS location information. The data >from the Tarnow Cemetery will be added to both The Foundation's and JRI-Poland's databases in late 2018. You can read more details about earlier projects of the FDJC on our website: http://jri-poland.org/foundation-for-documentation-jewish-cemeteries.htm and on their own website: http://cemetery.jewish.org.pl/lang_en/ Howard Fink Tarnow Coordinator Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
