Re: CONVOY 68 OF FEBRUARY 10th 1944 FROM DRANCY TO AUSCHWITZ #france #holocaust

Selma Sheridan

My paternal cousins, Cécile HERSCHER, age 16, and Odette HERSCHER, age 14, were forced from St-Privat-des-Prés to Poitiers to Drancy to Auschwitz on 10 Feb. 1944 (convoy 68).  Their parents had been murdered in 1942, Mathias (convoy 8) and Sara (convoy 40).  Their little sister Marguerite, age 9, was deported to Auschwitz (convoy 77).  The family had fled from Lens, Pas-de-Calais, about 1938, hoping that St-Privat would be a safer place.  Thank you for keeping alive  the memory of the victims of convoy 68, and all the others.

Thanks to those who've offered to help. I've confirmed what I
suspected - he is not related to me. His father was named Nochum
Jankiel, not Abraham.

Hello,
There is an archive in Montreal I believe called Canadian Jewish Congress as well contact the Jewish Public LIbrary in Montreal. They have genealogical information. I did some family research there. Also, there is a Montreal Genealogy society. Also, there is the Montreal Jewish Museum that does research into notable Jewish Montrealers.
Good luck!

The sentence starting  'In gleich.... '  means, "Please also copy,me in" .  it's a piece of office jargon.

Re: Carol Skydell z"l #JewishGenUpdates

Oh my, Carol was the first person with whom I worked closely when I started doing volunteer work for JewishGen all those decades ago. According to my archives, my first email from Carol was in June of 1999, when she asked me to develop something that now seems to be called the Wall of Honor -- which, I notice, dates back to September 1999. She was ALWAYS an absolute pleasure to work with, and she was always the first person to whom I'd turn to grouse about problems I might be having dealing with other people. She was unrelentingly cheerful, professional, and helpful. I haven't exchanged notes with her for some time, but now that she's gone I miss her just the same.

Here is an example of a reply that would be better addressed to the sender of the question (rather than to the group):

"You can also try Lithuania, where Kaunas/Kovno is.”

I, a reader, do not know what the question was. Maybe I don’t care, but maybe—given that I have ancestry from near Kovno—this answer might be useful to me IF I knew what the question was!

May I suggest that it would be useful, when submitting a reply like that, for the writer either to address the sender privately OR to include the original question?

Need assistance getting three vital records from Berlin #germany

Ruth Clarke

Is there anyone our there with access to Marriage and/or Birth records from Berlin Germany.

I would be looking for two marriage records of jewish survivors which occurred in a DP camp in Berlin, the first occurring in 1945, the second ca. 1947.   I don't know the name of the DP camp but is was in Schlachtenee.   Also looked for a 1946 birth record from same.

I am assuming, of course, that the marriages and births of Jewish DP survivors were registered.

I too would appreciate this.  However professionally, I do know that there are charges for webinars.  It would depend upon the meeting.  Maybe if you belonged to saya JGS, your membership would include all that JGS webinars and perhaps there could be reciprocal webinars.  Then perhaps a small charge ($10 or so) for those of us who don't belong to any JGS due to distance - or create a virtual JGS with an annual fee such as the $50 for a year of Legacy webinars.  If the webinar was not recorded or even if it was but no one could get the handouts (you have to take notes) perhaps that would protect the speakers.

Re: Jaffa 1903

Your family probably changed boats. Maybe in France. It was the time of the Ottoman Empire in Eretz Israel and our society has yet to see any documents of ships sailing from here. I do suggest you try a search of our collection which has some documents going back to the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. They may have had documents from one of the foreign consulates here.

Good luck,

Add a hashtag referring to the country you are interested in to your topic/subject. For example, it you are member of GerSIG (German SIG), you add the hashtag #Germany.
You can then select the postings refering to Germany by selecting "#Germany" frpm the Hashtags pulldown menu on the Messages page.

Re: Looking for descendants of Iosef Blaufstein (sp.) from Biala Rawska, lived in Israel

Valentin Lupu

Shalom Alberto,
The 75 testimonies found at Yad Vashem were submitted by at least 5 different people with the same name, Yosef Blaustein (Blustein and similar variations).
Most of them are about a large family from Lodz (by Yosef from Holon), There other testimonies about families from Staszow, Rowne, Warsaw and other places in Russia. There is no testimony related to Biala Rawska.

Re: Online Meetings

I understand what Ava is saying – of course it would have to be done with agreement of society and speaker. I was only thinking if a society is streaming a presentation ‘live’ to its members and/or community, they could put a link on this discussion group to enable others to join. Again, of course with full agreement of the speaker.

As to the point about an honorarium, here in Israel, in our society, all speakers are volunteers and do not charge for speaking to our groups, so maybe that is why I did not consider this point.

It was just a thought.

Keep well everyone.

Unofrtunately, there is one sentence I do not really understand. What I read is

Lieber Kusin,

ich verständige dich, dass ich bin jetzt befreit geworden  Bitte wenn möglich meine Angehörige zu verständigen. In gleich mich wieder verständigen. Dein Bruder David ist auch frei.

Translation:

Dear cousin,
I inform you that I am now liberated and I ask you to inform my relatives if possible. Inform me again immediately (?). Your brother David is also free.
