Yiddish or Hebrew name for IDA #belarus #names

Marilyn Weinman

Hello all my fellow Jewish Genners !

I hope this finds everyone in good health and safe tonight.

I need some help figuring out my maternal grandmother's birth name. She was born Ida Jablonsky somewhere around 1873-74 I believe,in Pruzani, Russia, which I know is now Belarus. Not sure if town name is the same though. The question I have, that I'm hoping someone will know is,what may have been the Yiddish /or Hebrew name for Ida. I believe Ida was her given name prior to entering the U.S.,as it's spelled out Ida on the Declaration of Intention document that I've found.
Thanks for any help I can get :)

My grandmother's name was Ida Jablonsky, and my question pertains to her name. I'm assuming that Ida was her given name when she arrived in the U.S.,but does anyone know what the Hebrew/ Yiddish name would've been at birth ?
Thanks for any help I can get, and stay well :)

From what i have discovered, Jews were not allowed to live in these cities in the 19th century. If the did it wss because they worked for a wealthy or politically or military family.
Diane Jacobs

My reply:
My grandfather was a capmaker, unlikely to have had influential patrons. His second child (my mother's older sister) is recorded as having been born in Saint Petersburg in 1896. The family is also listed in the 1897 First All Russian Census as living in S.P.  The family emigrated to England in 1898.

Re: Given name Ksyel

Philip Heilbrunn

The name KSYEL – pronounced K’seal is an abbreviation of the name YEKUSIEL (Ykutiel in modern Hebrew)

YEKUSIEL minus the first letter YUD amounts to KSEAL or KSIEL

Brief Translation Request from German #hungary #germany

jzeisler@...

A cousin of mine wrote the following on his ITS card after the war. Google does a terrible job of translating it, so would someone please translate this for me?

Google translates it as "About two months ago, a reindeer fronter between the parquet dancer Grasen Henri Viglia and the reserve senior lieutenant Ladislaus Vècsey occurred in the city grove, which ended with two not inconsiderable injuries to Viglia." The problem are the words "reindeer fronter" and parquet dancer" which make no sense. And is "city grove" correct?

Thank you!

Jerry

I read once that in Sephardic custom, the parents don't name babies after themselves (the baby's own parents).  They only name their babies after other living relatives.

Samuel Stein #general

Karen <kgschneider@...>

Hi Stuart,

In case you are still searching for records of your grandfather Samuel Stein, I ran across a headstone on Jewishdata.com from Waldheim Cemetery, Chicago, that seems like it could be him.
Am attaching that image along with an obituary and links to more cemetery records from Findagrave.com for Samuel, wife Rose and two of their daughters.
Most provide information about other family members as well as a mention of Samuel's father, Chaim Lev Zvi Stein.

It also appears there are records available on Ancestry.com including naturalization and census.
Feel free to email me if this is indeed your grandfather and you would like more information and do not have access to that site.
Also if any of the attached links do not work.

Maybe it's not a voter list.  Maybe ancestry misidentified it.  I don't know.  Just guessing.

MyHeritage Offering Free Access to All US Census Records on MyHeritage #events #announcements

Jan Meisels Allen

Marking the decennial US census, MyHeritage is offering free access to searching and viewing all their U.S. Census collection March 29th until April 5th, 2020. They did not place a time zone cut off time so I would guestimate Central time.

To access the records go to:

https://www.myheritage.com/research/category-1100/us-census

Fill out the name, birth residence information and search. Be aware that due to those who keyed in the names into the database not being familiar with some of the names there will be misspellings. Once you find the record you want there is  a transcribed record of the information. Scroll down to the image of the census.  If you click on the orange “save record” above the image it takes you to save it on MyHeritage.  However, if you prefer to save it to your own computer, right click on your mouse and then when the list of options appears you can click save image as to your computer and save it to the file you prefer.

To read more see:

https://blog.myheritage.com/2020/03/free-access-to-all-u-s-census-records-on-myheritage/

Remember to fill out your census form on line by April 1st!  Go to https://my2020census.gov/  and use the  key code you received in the mail.

I have no affiliation with MyHeritage and am posting this solely for the information of the reader.

Researching family in Saint Petersburg, Russia #russia

<Jews were not allowed to live in these cities (St Petersburg) in the 19th century. If the did it wss because they worked for a wealthy or politically or military family. >
Generally, Jews were not permitted to live in the Russian Empire outside the Pale of Settlement unless they were classified as retired military, merchants, or residents of an agricultural colony.  That was the law, but there is always a gap between the letter of the law and what happens on the ground.  I have read that there was little enforcement of this law before 1880, and enforcement was stepped up between then and the revolution. No idea how effective enforcement might have been. The fact is that the larger the city, the greater the range of economic opportunities it offered, so there was economic incentive to ignore the law and, if caught, to try to persuade the official that you were an exception.

I believe if you use the clippings verbatim and cite the publication, city, date and page you can use the clipping.

You may also want to acquire the book, "The Moses of Rovno" about a German who rescued Jews in that town, Fritz Graebe. His son owned an apartment that I lived in, and Mr. Graebe was honored by being named a Righteous Gentile. He was the only German to testify against Germany in the Nuremberg trials. The book was written by Douglas Huneke, and while I was living in the flat a film crew came from Germany to do a documentary about him that was afterwards featured at Jewish film festivals.
