Rabbi David of Novarodok (Galya Mesechet)-19th century #belarus #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Researching family tree of the rabbi of Novarodok, during the 19th
century, Rabbi David be Moshe (of Klezk), also known for his book
"Galya Mesechet". One son, Moshe, married HOROWITZ from Minsk and
adopted the HOROWIT0Z family name. A son-in-law, RABINOVITCH,
published his above mentioned book.

One reply which I received in the past when asking for David's family
name, was TCHEMERINSKY but checking with some members of this family
they did not know of the above Rabbi David.

I have reason to believe that we are somehow related.

Seeking 1940 ship name and manifest Lisbon to Mozambique Portugal Lourenço Marques #general

Subject: Seeking 1940 ship name and manifest Lisbon to Mozambique #Portugal #Lourenço Marques #Mozambique #shipmanifest

My grandmother’s sister Rose PODLIASHUK, née KODRIANSKY and her husband Max fled Lisbon to Lourenço Marques in Mozambique between late-June and mid-July 1940. I believe their arrival date was on or before August 18. They were stranded there for a year after the ZamZam, the boat they were supposed to take to Palestine, was torpedoed by the Germans in the mid-Atlantic. They arrived in Palestine in mid-August 1941 by plane to Istanbul and then sea plane to Tiberias.

I am looking for the name of the ship they took to get to Mozambique, the manifest, and any other information about the route or the voyage.

Thank you for reading and responding to this.

Yom HaShoah 2020/5780 #JewishGenUpdates #holocaust

Avraham Groll

As we observe Yom HaShoah, we are sharing this message from Joyce Field – a devoted volunteer for more than two decades, and past Vice President of JewishGen. During her tenure, she established the Yizkor Book project, Burial Registry (JOWBR) and Holocaust Collection.
--
Observing Yom HaShoah within the context of the COVID-19 Pandemic has led me to somber reflection. The isolation we are experiencing has reinforced how important the bonds of community truly are, and that life’s meaning is intertwined with family and community.

But it also made me ever cognizant of the challenges and hardships that families experienced just 75 years ago during the Holocaust. While we are physically isolated, we have the luxury of modern technology to keep us safe, entertained, and in constant communication with family and friends.

In contrast, what strength it must have taken for Holocaust Survivors to endure long periods of isolation, permeated by fear and dread of the unknown, without food, water or anything to keep them occupied.

With these thoughts in mind, I am ever so grateful for having had the opportunity to actively participate in, and lead, JewishGen’s important work for so many years. Every moment was meaningful, infused with purpose, and it provided me with a tremendous sense of community. Most importantly, it allowed me to directly create projects and initiatives which, until this very day, help memorialize the Jewish people who were murdered during the Shoah, and their communities whose culture, customs, history and heritage was nearly eradicated.

The word “Yizkor” means “remembrance.” On this day devoted to remembering the Holocaust, and its victims, please do your share to remember our ancestors. Search the Holocaust Collection, or the burial registry. Read through the translations of Yizkor Books, and make sure that the richness of Jewish communal life before the Holocaust will never be forgotten.

Note:
We offer our resources as a public service to the Jewish community, and feature unparalleled access to tens of millions of records, search tools, educational resources and networking opportunities. You can begin your search, or get involved, by visiting

Age of majority was 24. My father had to wait for his 24th birthday in order to marry my mother, because his father did not give consent. He became 24 in October 27, 1939 and got married November 12

And I can't see any way to download it.  Is there a trick to it?

Thanks,

Leiser/Leisor/Lazar is male.
My Lazar was a Leo/Leon.
I believe Breine is the equivalent of Bruche. My Bruche was a Bertha.

Leiser/Leizer is a male name. It’s a short form of Eliezer. But he could have used any name in the “new world."

Cerne and Breine/Bryna are female names. No equivilants. My secular name is Barbara, but my religious name is Breindel (a diminutive of Brina. But I, my cousin Bina, and another cousin Ruth all have the religious name Breindel.

Re: Koltenon and Kamorannka - cities in Russia? Latvia? #lithuania #russia #latvia

Herbert Lazerow

There are apparently many towns so small or currently abandoned that they cannot currently be located. A relative of mine was supposedly from Kolpuki and and another from Komasic, towns supposedly in the vicinity of Velizh in the Vitebsk guberniya, but I have been unable to find them. Kolpuki does not seem like a far stretch from your Koltenon.

Pamela,

I once saw a NYC death cert for someone who "died at sea."

Have you checked the NYC death records?

Reinier,

Have you searched at JRI Poland database?

I searched for surname Wurzel and town name Tarnow.  I got about 200 hits.  You may find vital records for family members.
