Munz (Ozora, Budapest), Berger (Csenger) #hungary

George Muenz

Hello, In the last 3 years, I have been fortunate to find family I did not know existed in Israel, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Argentina, and the USA. I have been fortunate to find out where my family lived and visited several times. The search is always on though as we all know.

I am still looking for Munz (Muncz) with connections to Ozora and Budapest and Berger from Csenger. Other names are: Csapkowitz, Abraham, Grunbaum, Laufer, Hatschek, Karpelesz, Valdhauser. Thanks, George Muenz, Vancouver, Canada

Re: Fisher Headstone Translation #translation

There might not necessarily be a "connection" between the names.  Often, people would have a Hebrew name and a secular name that are totally different.

That being said, if you are looking for his father:  The Hebrew name Tzvi often went together with the secular name of Hersh or Hirsch or similar.

And, if the secular date of death would be helpful to you:  The Hebrew date is the 24th of Tamuz, 5668.  This corresponds to July 22/23, 1908.

Re: Mount Zion and Mount Hebron Cemetery, NY #usa

I never thought of even asking a cemetery to take photos.  I have some relatives at Mt Zion and was planning to visit -  but thanks to the suggestion someone made, I did call them today.  The cost is $15 per photo - you must mail a check and explain what you need, and include your email address for the photos.

Re: Seeking descendants of eleven LIEBOWITZ children who settled in Toronto, New York and New Jersey #usa

seanagranov@...

my maternal great grand father was  Ben Lebow.    He was the middle son of 9 known children of Israel David Lebowitz and Freide Lazar who passed in 1918 ad 1919 respectively (both  buried in Washington cemetery in Brooklyn)  The kids were born in various locations ranging from Ukraine, Lithuania and New York. Freide and many of the kids emigrated in 1891. Israel and the oldest two sons must have come over earlier.   I have seen the family name spelled as Liebowitz and Lebowitz,  and then it was shortened to Lebow and Jacobs depending on the sibling.     Of the nine kids here are birth years and approximately where i believe they ended up:   Charles 1870 - ???, Morris 1874 - New Jersey, Bessie 1880 - Albany NY, Abraham 1881 - NY,  William 1884 - Waukegan, IL and Los Angeles, CA, Benjamin 1888 - Connecticut, Harry 1890 - IL and Los Angeles CA, Louis 1892 - New York, and Mae/May 1895 New York.

good luck to all in your searches

Suggestion:  Before doing a photo request for F-a-G, go to the Mount Hebron website [ http://www.mounthebroncemetery.com ], search the database, get the grave location (they recently have added a satellite image map that will pinpoint the gravesite), and specify it on your photo request.

That is a very good suggestion.  Go to the site and get the exact location they givee which is a block and reference number (that's the number on the gate) and if there is a line or grave number or section letter.

I have done a lot of the Find a Grave requests for both of these NY cemeteries.  Hebron is especially challenging because F-a-G shows over 1,000 requests.  What I have done is sort the requests to block and reference number to see if I was going to be in that area of the cemetery.  Too many of the requests are not clear or people instead of leading with the location information load in stories about the grave and why it is important or saying thank yous.

The only chance of getting those requests filled is to be very specific about the location and not hide it in the request with extra information.  You can look at the requests and see what I mean about the ones that are clear versus the ones that make it difficult to find the specific location.

There seem to be a confusion here -- the popular song is about Belz at the border of todays Poland and Ukraine. The Balti (Belts in Yiddish) is in Moldova former Bessarabia. And it is a rather large town (by Moldovan standards). See

These are the census page of my direct family . These are my g and gg grand parents.

Depending on records, names are  : Szames, Frydman, Rojzenman, Dzik, Ejchenholtz, Sztajnbok.

In case you accept, could you please translate main info by line number. What is of utmost importance are the town of birth (when it's not kozienice), profession, cause of death or any information about their life. I you could pay attention to the information in last column on the right hand side.

Thank you very much for your help.

Searching for info on GELLER families of Podkamien and Zlochev #galicia #holocaust

S.geller@...

I’m searching for any further info for my father’s family(ies) from Podkamien and Zlochev, in the period from the late 1800s until the end of WWII. So far, I’ve found some birth records, Yad Vashem testimonies, ship passenger lists, etc., mostly for my father Moses and his siblings (all presumed lost in the Holocaust) Rubin, Chana and Reisel (Rosa), however would like to have more details of his siblings spouses & children, his parents (Solomon/Shlomo) and Brane (nee Frischwasser) and their parents (Itsak and Taube Tanen).  Any help/guidance to finding records such as births, burials, business records, schools/universities would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Family Tree of the Jewish People #general

I use FamilyTree Maker 2019,  apaid-for upgrade from a disc of an earlier version. All the software, I assume,  is on my hard disc.
I'm wary of upgrading to a newer version., since several programmes that one used to buy one-off now have upgraded to versions  for which an annual subscription is required, Microsoft Word is the best-known example, but many other companies have adopted this policy. So if your income disappears, all hope of further work on the tree
disappears, even if the tree is still available to you.

My great-great-grandfather Khaim Izrailevich son of Zelig was born around 1860 in Kopyl, and lived later in Minsk. Around 1910-1920 he spent a few years in America to earn money for his family, but I couldn't find any information about his whereabouts during that period. I also couldn't find any information about relatives of his in Kopyl.

When I taught at Queens College CUNY before my Aliyah, I often would walk the 2 long blocks to the Mount Hebron Main Street rear entrance gate and take some volunteer Find-a-Grave photos.  I have had some photos taken by Find-a-Grave volunteers for me subsequent to my Aliyah.

Suggestion:  Before doing a photo request for F-a-G, go to the Mount Hebron website [ http://www.mounthebroncemetery.com ], search the database, get the grave location (they recently have added a satellite image map that will pinpoint the gravesite), and specify it on your photo request.

Looking for Ina ZAVGORODNY (born ~1940) in Israel #israel #russia

Adam Turner

Hello! I am trying to track down the family of Ina ZAVGORODNY, who apparently lived in Mitzpe Ramon, Israel when she submitted a Page of Testimony to Yad Vashem on her father Mikhail ZAYDENVARG. From what I can tell, the handwritten date on that page is 1992: https://yvng.yadvashem.org/nameDetails.html?language=en&itemId=1948268&ind=1

After Googling in Russian, I found that Ina submitted her father's letters to his family during WWII to a book compiling letters of Soviet-Jewish soldiers. Her father Mikhail, according to the bit of the book I just ran through Google Translate, was a Soviet prosecutor in Odessa who later served in the Red Army and went missing in action near Kharkov in 1943: http://holocf.1gb.ru/Editor/assets2/Cohrani_moi_pisma_1-155_edit1.pdf

By any chance, does anyone know contact info for Ina Zavgorodny or her family?

Thanks!
