Re: Rabbi Adam of Rohatyn, about 1750 #galicia #rabbinic

Dale Friedman

Hello,

Regarding your request to fill in the gap between Rabbi "Adam" and his descendants until 1895 (and later) I would encourage you to join the Rohatyn Shtetl Research Group. There is definitely information about the Nagelberg descendants of Rabbi Adam discussed in this Google Group as well as a considerable amount about many other families as well as about Rohatyn and nearby towns.

Indeed, anyone with ancestors from Rohatyn and nearby towns should also consider joining the group as there is an incredible wealth of shared information on the site from group members.  To request access please use the following link to contact Dr. Alex Feller, the founder and website administrator:

Benjamin Shapin family #names

Paul Silverstone

I have been trying to find Benjamin SHAPIN and his family in the 1940 census or anywhere else.
He was born in 1898 in Russia, his wife Sarah/Sadie Silverstein was born in 1902 in Poland.  They married in NY in 1917, had four children
Benjamin, Meyer, Nancy and Shirley, born in NYC.
I found Benjamin Shapin married to Hilda Obod in the 1940 census in NYC.

The others do not appear in the census, nor in the draft registrations.
Perhaps the family changed  its name.  I tried Sha*

Can someone suggest an alternate search mechanism?

Israel Death Index - Anschel and Ida Katz #israel

dennis gries

Is there a searchable Israeli death index?

Recently, Rose and Theo have offered hints about getting death certs.  My targets are siblings of my maternal grandmother and their children.

I have looked at FindAGrave and BillionGraves, and there is one person close.

Precisely, the earliest pair is Ida (perhaps born Ides) nee Puretz, and married to Anshel  Katz.

Ida was born 13 Feb 1899 and this is a compilation of notes that I have on her:

per XX > in Koln married a man from Breslau.  In 1935 left for Palestine.  ( died in Israel)

Per YY > had one son, who died young - in his 20s.

Found some papers - 1966 from I. Katz,  Keren Kajemet 31 - Tel Aviv -

Per YY - this is Ida Puretz Katz . Also have 1950 receipts of packages to A(nschel). Katz and I. Katz at the same address (Blvd).

I see that there is a rather famous Asher Anchel Katz, and wonder if our Anschel had a first name not known to me.  My sources are long deceased.   I don’t know Hebrew, but can labor through, esp with machines translations.

Any help will be thanked profusely.

My uncle Max Fromstein married Bessie Leibowitz also spelled Labovitch and Laibowitz in Toronto. They had three children here. Might she be part of your family? Her parents were Louis Leila Leisle Labovitch and Jennie Kamenezky or Ramenezky. I do not have birth locations for them. Bessie was born in Russia, which as we know could mean anything.

Re: Central Death certificate DATABASE from ISRAEL in english is available? #israel

Andres Carciente

Thank you so much!

From the death certificate is there any information about his/her marriage if this happened outside Israel?

For example one who was already married in Hungary and made Aliyah to Israel in the 60s and the died in the 70s,is there any register ( from the Rabinatus?) were marriage records can be searched?

Re: Romania SIG #bessarabia #ukraine #lithuania (European Union) European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative Launches New Website With Surveys of 1500 Jewish Cemeteries #bessarabia #ukraine #lithuania

To clarify, as I understand the article at https://www.esjf-surveys.org/ , this project is about researching the cemeteries' history and documenting their needs for preservation. However, individual burial sites will not be photographed (except perhaps to show current conditions), nor will personal data be extracted from headstones or historical documents. In other words, this is a cemetery project, not a genealogical project. At first I feared they would be duplicating some work already done or in progress by SIGS or research divisions.

Wendy, you don't mention whether you've checked the JRI-Poland database for marriage, divorce or birth records for them. That would be my first thought. Good luck.
Also, the census taker may have assumed he was married at that time, or your relative didn't want to say he was divorced.

Pogrom Documentary Film #events #general

LeeAnn Dance

Two years ago my colleague Cliff Hackel and I released My Dear Childrenthe first-ever documentary about the anti-Jewish massacres in Eastern Europe following WWI.  Unfortunately, it’s a period of history that is little known or understood, despite the fact that pogrom scholars today consider these massacres to be a precursor to the Holocaust just 20 years later.  Just after the film’s release, JewishGen hosted a screening of My Dear Children at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC.  Now this award-winning film is in its second year of distribution to public television stations nationwide through American Public Television and has reached more than 75% of US TV households.  Yet we know many still do not know about this piece of history shared by so many.  Cliff and I believe this is an important story that needs to be heard loud and wide.

During the lockdown, we are offering a stay-at-home digital download of the film for just $10.  The offer will go away when the lockdown lifts.

Just this week, I received this email from someone who discovered the film while doing research on Ancestry.com:

"Thank you for one of the most extraordinary and powerful experiences I have ever had. The film you made is exquisitely done, and as a theatre professional (producer, dramaturg, director) and academic, I have the judgment to see how much craft as well as intelligence was used to shape an important story.

I'm sure many people have said what I’ll say: This is my history about which I knew almost nothing. It means a great deal to me to understand where my family came from, and to consider what it means to be Jewish. My family largely repudiated Judaism and I internalized their disinterest, or perhaps even repugnance. I know I will watch this film many times and will encourage my friends and family to see it as well.”   Susan Jonas

To see a 12-minute piece of the film and to get your digital download, follow this link:  https://www.mydearchildrendoc.com/screen-the-film/

That page will also link you to the little book that inspired the film.

And if you’re interested and want to get a group together, talk to me about a Zoom Q&A.  I know you will have lots of questions after seeing the film, and I hope you find it informative and meaningful.

Hannah STATNEGROSH #names

Searching for Hannah STATNEGROSH, probably from Teoofipil  or Kremenets area.  born 1854, married to Avram Wagner (or Vagner), in New York by 1895. Anyone familiar with the name STATNEGROSH, which is said to mean “not a penny” because her father had a krechma (saloon) and wouldn’t give peasants any credit; it also could mean a pauper.

Hello everyone,
I have hit another roadblock in my family tree. The Surname Dinerstein is in my family tree but i am unfortunately not able to go any further than my 2x great grandmother (Maternal side) Celia Dinerstein and her father's hebrew name Tzvi. Unfortunately I can't go beyond that. Supposedly she was from Lithuania Vilnus area, but I looked on Litvak for anything regarding her name and nothing comes up. Please help. Thank you so much.

Divorce Among Jews in Poland #poland

Wendy Newman

My research has revealed a new relative (by marriage) that immigrated to New York from Poland in 1921.  Shortly after, he filled out a Declaration of Intention, stating that he was divorced, and had 3 grown children who were either in NY already or would be joining him shortly (all born in Warsaw).  In 1927, his petition once again claimed he was divorced, yet on the 1930 census, he declared he was married and was living with his 3 children.  His wife is my interest, as she is the relation to my family.  I don't think she ever came to the U.S.  I never came across divorce before in Poland and just wanted to confirm it did happen.  And ask if there is anything I can do to further research the wife that was left by her family?

Thanks,
Wendy Newman

Re: Searching for my mothers lost sister from Belaya Tzerkov Ukraine: Chaya Gohfeld #ukraine

Yad Vashem's Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names (https://yvng.yadvashem.orgincludes a Page of Testimony for David Gokhfeld from Belaya Tserkov, son of Moisey. Possibly there's a family connection.

The good news: the Page was written in 2016, so the submitter, Bronislava Bank Gokhfeld (or Gokhfeld Bank?), may well be alive. Some challenges: she's in Moscow and wrote the Page (attached) in Russian.

The Page includes Bronislava's address. If someone translates that for you, you might try writing her.

Hi Sean,  your family seems familiar to me....my gm Ida Goldstein Goldberg Leibowitz(Lebowitz) brother Michael married a Bessie Leibowitz and had 3 children.   Bessie had many siblings with the names u mention above.
Her parents were David and think Mom was a Sarah or Rebecca...not sure of the name but Bessie's siblings were like above.   They lived in the lower east side of nyc and Michael and Bessie lived for many years
later in the Bronx.  If you see any connection, please let me know.  thanks
