Searching for Mario Toselli, an Italian who Saved Jews #austria-czech

Madeleine Isenberg

To all,

A few weeks ago, as a result of someone asking me about a Jewish
chaplain in the Czech Brigade in England, Alexander KRAUS, who was
with the Czech Brigade attached to the British 8th Army in England,
during WW II. (My father (then called Jindrich GOLDSTEIN) was in that
brigade, and this chaplain attended my parents' wedding in London).
I went in search on-line for whatever I could find. I came across
an article in the AJR (AJR=3D Association of Jewish Refugees in
Britain), dated November 1955, that involved Chaplain Alexander Kraus
and his involvement for recognition of "the Italian Hotel Porter."

I'm including the text of the short article here, because I had never
heard of this Italian man -- Signor Mario Toselli -- who seems to have
helped save 3,000-4,000 Jews. Yad Vashem doesn't seem to have any
mention of him among the Righteous Gentiles. If appropriate, and
people, or their descendants, who were saved could attest to this,
perhaps he could still get that recognition that he surely deserved.
I also tried to locate him and/or any descendants, but could not find
anything on-line to help. Perhaps readers will have some information
to help in this quest:

Here's the text of the article:

"The Italian Hotel Porter"

Memories are short. For us Jews, the fate of our nearest ones and our
own experiences after 1933 stand so much in the foreground of our
minds that we do not always properly remember and recognize the
brighter happenings of that period; we are apt to forget those who
helped us in our plight. Courageous non-Jews were not only among the
better known political and religious leaders -- it is the deed of the
humble and unknown which weighs even heavier. One of them, a modest
Italian hotel porter, Signor Mario Toselli, through whose work three
to four thousand Jews were saved, recently paid a visit to London at
the invitation of a former Jewish Chaplain to the Czechoslovak Army,
Mr. Alexander Kraus. At a reception, held in Signor Toselli's honour,
a joint presentation was made to him by the AJR and the representative
bodies of Jews >from Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland. The brave
actions of the guest of honour were recalled by Mr. Kraus who knew
them >from his own experience.

Nightly Passages To France

It happened in Ventimiglia, on the French border, during the months
preceding Italy's entry into the war on April 30th, 1940. Jews from
various European countries who had taken refuge in Italy, no longer
felt safe. There was no country ready to accept them. So, "Mario," as
he was affectionately called by his countrymen and his prot=E9g=E9s,
organised their "illegal" infiltration to France. Night after night,
fisher boats, and later on a motor boat, secretly left for a place on
the French coast. Once the refugees had landed without being watched
by the French, they would report to the nearest Police Station and
were granted asylum. Signor Toselli unselfishly carried out this
rescue work as a helper to his endangered fellow-men; those who could
not give him a modest monetary recognition were rendered assistance
without being asked for any remuneration. Repeatedly, the French
authorities who knew of Toselli's activities asked the Italians to
arrest him, and once, when bringing some belongings of the refugees to
France, he was imprisoned for some time. It was a most dangerous job
from beginning to end.
After the war, when Mr. Kraus tried to trace "Mario," he was first
assumed to have been killed, but at last, he was found. The informal
gathering, at which representatives of Jews >from the Continent could
meet this unassuming man and express their gratitude to him was an
inspiration for all who were present. They were strengthened in their
belief that, even in the darkest hours, the torch of humanity was not
entirely extinct and they were grateful to have met one of the unknown
helpers of the persecuted Jews. "

sebesta and schebesta and a question #austria-czech

rfc974@...

First, I want to thank everyone who pointed out that Schebesta is a
German transliteration of Sebesta. That was tremendously useful to
learn (both for this problem and going forward).

Second, does anyone have experience having videos transcribed and
translated? Some cousins were recorded by the USC Shoah Foundation --
but the recordings are in Czech, which I don't speak. The foundation
is fine with me having someone transcribe and translate the audio
track, and there are multiple companies that advertise -- I was
wondering if anyone has already tried this and has advice?

Thanks!

Craig
