JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Re: Unable to find names on passenger lists

rhonda.post@...
Sadly, the naturalization applications do not always have the full information. My husband's grandfather Aaron Foreman (later name changed to William Aaron Foreman) applied four times for naturalization and I have all copies but there is no mention of a ship name. It says UNKNOWN. He was 7 years old in April 1904 which is arrival date obtained from naturalization application. It says they traveled from Liverpool to NY. The date of arrival on the 1910 census says 1905. I know he traveled with his mother Libe Katz. She married in June 1905 to Sameul Shenker in Boston, but died before she was naturalized. I have gone page by page on ship manifests on all dates in 1904 to the first half of 1905 looking for a woman with a 7 or 8 year old boy and have not been able to find anything.

Seeking information about Hillel Kivovitz and family
#belarus
lhcomac@...
As a result of my search for information about my paternal grandmother, I'v learned that she had a brother--Hillel Kivovitz--that I never knew about. According to the 1910 census, he was born around 1880, came to the USA from Derevna in 1898, lived in Bklyn. His wife's name was Mollie, and they had two children: Gertrude and Seymour. Would very much like to make contact with descendants of this family.

I have tried searching, using Steve Morse's gold form, for the town, and depending its size, one or more letters of the last name. I haven't found my relative yet, but it may help.

In search of Noam BECKERMAN from Ukraine/?Crimea
#ukraine
Peter Lobbenberg
Eugenia ZASLAVSKY was born in Kerch, Crimea (Ukraine/Russia) on 20 April 1903, one of eight siblings born variously in Kerch and in Genichesk on the Sea of Azov (also Ukraine/Russia).
On 2 August 1919 Eugenia, aged 16, gave birth to a son Ura (later George); it is not known whether he was born in Kerch, Genichesk, or as one family document suggests, Kharkov. Both Eugenia and Ura took the surname BECKERMAN, and Ura grew up to be told that his father's name was Noam BECKERMAN and that he came from Kharkov. But there is no further trace of Noam, and nothing is known about him. In particular it is not known whether whether he disappeared after getting Eugenia pregnant, whether they remained together and married, or perhaps something in between: or possibly he died young.
In the early 1920s Eugenia's brother Abraham ZASLAVSKY and most of his siblings, including Eugenia with little Ura in tow, emigrated seriatim to China: initially to Harbin and then, in about 1925, to Shanghai where Ura grew up. Noam - always assuming that was his real name - appears to have vanished from the scene.
Can anyone help trace Ura's father Noam BECKERMAN from this very sketchy outline, or suggest how and where it might be possible to make further enquiries?

17th century mixed marriages--Rhineland & Switzerland?
#dna
howard sachs
DNA records and Geni tracings suggest material religious-ethnic crossovers in the century after Luther in Southwest Germany & Switzerland,. Geni reports Vice President Pence has Weil ancestry with a Swiss cross-over in the 17th century (or late 16th). Y DNA connects my closest all-male line with a "Pennsylvania Dutch" migrant --early 1700s. Similar tracings have been noted. Any literature or comment supporting or rebutting this theory? I found this record on Ancestry, but I am having a difficult time trying to find the location; the town is not coming up in my searches on Jewishgen. A cousin has his birth place as Tiszadob, Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg, Hungary, but the record is different. I wanted to know if the places are near each other.

Hi Danielle
Yesterday I wrote a long answer with important information from some passenger manifests, but it seems it didn't pass. 1938 and 1939 Paul Parczewski (later Paul Parski) went twice to his brother A. My Press/Pres and Schneider/Shneyder families came from the same area and had been living there for at least 3-4 generations by the time of WW II. Have not come across Eisenberg in my research as yet, there seems to be few known records from that area. Please share other surnames linked to the Eisenbergs and do list yourself in Family Finder if you have not done so, already.

Re: Unable to find names on passenger lists

jennifer@...
OP said he believed the passenger arrived in the early 1900s. This is why I said to start by searching for a naturalization. Searching for a manifest without first searching for a naturalization in that era is not an efficient use of time. I was actually trying to answer the question at hand and be helpful to the person asking it. Had he asked for a lecture on the paucity of information in 19th century naturalizations, perhaps one would have been relevant. But I still recommend searching for them before searching manifests. Because limiting factors like addresses can give you more certainty you have the correct person.
And certificates of arrival were required by federal law after 1906. So for someone believed to have arrived “in the early 1900s” there’s a chance some reliable information can be found.

I have searched Bevis Marks records but can find no marriage between Solomon/Saloman da Costa and Leah (?), so it is possible that they were married in another synagogue, not Sephardi. It is also possible that in spite of her Jewish name of Leah, she was not Jewish and they were married in a church.
I will try in the next day or so to search through the BM records for the forename Leah and see if I can trace her that way. Regards Martyn Woolf

Hello,
I wanted to post a reply to a message. I can't log in. How does it work? Don't ask me to search in the FAQ questions, it's too complicated. I don't want to receive everyday a big list of topics. I just want to know if there are replies to the 2 topics I sent. Can someone help make it easier?
