Jacob (Yankel) CIMBERG (or KIMBERG) #ukraine

Ted Kotzin

Jacob Cimberg came to New York from Kremenets in about 1895. Hi sister Shprintze (Sprinel), his twin, followed in 1898.  I am looking for their family in Ukraine.  Father said to be Samuel (Shmuel) Zenwal Cimberg (or Kimberg); I have no others that are confirmed.

Alexander Sharon

Hi Carol,

Word "Kretchna" for occupation should read: "Karczma" [ kahr: ch mah:] which translates from Polish as Inn, an related occupation is "karczmarz" - an innkeeper or publican. Inn services in additions to housekeeping (food and lodging) have also included  stabling and fodder for horses.

Jewish gauchos Argentina #latinamerica
From: Michael Sharp
A uncle of my mother was a gaucho in Argentina but moved to Manchester UK to find a wife. We don't know where in eastern Europe he came from but assume he lived in one of the Hirsch  colonies in Argentina. Does anyone know of any searchable databases containing vital records, census or immigration data for the colonies?

Hi there
As far as I know, there are no databases (neither lists) of Jewish colonists in Argentina.
If your relative came to Argentina, the only database of arrivals is located at
Notice it is 1.incomplete due to lack of some of the original books, 2. does not have Soundex capabilities.
This means you should search the surname with several spellings thinking like a Spanish speaking clerk in the 1900´ be creative.
Your assumption that this uncle was a colonist seems too vague, except if he came in the 1890´s
After the initial Baron de Hirshc efforts, thousands of Jews first from Russia and later from Poland came to Argentina.
Maybe he did economically well here, and had a business ? There are business guides, usually used by immigrants where he could advertise.
You dont mention if he came back to Argentina after finding a wife in Manchester.
Notice it is 1. incomplete, 2. at the end of the form there are several cemeteries listed, check in each one, 3. these cemeteries serve people living in Greater Buenos AIres city, NOT the numerous Jewish communities in the vast interior of the country and 4 the search engine does not have a Soundex capability.
Hope this helps

Spain Gives Sephardic Jews Extra Time for Citizenship Status #sephardic

Jan Meisels Allen

Spain’s government announced on May 14 that it will extend the deadline for descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from the country more than 500 years ago. They must have launched the process of acquiring Spanish citizenship but could not complete it due to the pandemic.  The extension is for one year until September 2021 and only applies to those who had presented their preliminary request for citizenship before the October 2019 deadline.

Applicants must sit for a mandatory test on their knowledge of Spain’s Constitution and culture that had been cancelled because of the pandemic and give them more time to travel to Spain for a required appearance before a notary.

In Oct. 2019, the ministry said that more than 132,000 people who claim Sephardic origins had requested Spanish citizenship since the law offering them the opportunity took effect in 2015.

"Mixed marriage" may be an unduly polite term.  Somehow typically Jewish DNA appears in "Christian" families.  Geni has each generation of the Pence family, with a line going back to  a prominent Rabbi Weil in Southwestern Germany. Assuming in this case that the genealogy is sound (occasionally true), the surnames allow a guess that a Jewish woman  was the mother of a Gentile child late in 16th century Switzerland.  "Common law partnership" or something else?  So Geni says I am a 17th cousin--a bit remote.  In my paternal line the DNA suggests an early abandonment of the Jewish faith by some fellow in the Rhineland in the 17th century. I have run into a smattering of such situations.  Is there any write-up as to unusual frequency in that area at that time of religious turmoil--or are my conclusions entirely unsound? Frank Finkenberg on JewishGen #general

Ralph Baer

Yesterday, I received a message from Frank FINKENBERG via the The JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF). It turns out that we are a match in the NORDHEIMER family of Memmelsdorf in Unterfranken in Bavaria, fifth cousins. My reply to him bounced. I assume that he has an old e-mail address on JewishGen. Does anyone have a current address? The one he used is a address.

Please reply to me directly. Thanks.

Advice on how to find information on schools: Germany - Primary Schools "Agricultural and Commerce" #germany

Good Day to Everyone,

I need advice from those more experienced than me in family research as I may be going about this all wrong. I have been researching my Germany family tree over the last few months and have found details on my 4th Great Grandfather. The information is from the archivist from Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Bavaria. Browsing Google Books, I found an Annual Report in German on the "Agricultural and Commerce" school which has my 4th Great Grandfather's name mentioned in it.

I am stumped to figure out which German Jewish Community he comes from before he left for the US in 1859. My family is not showing up as a part of the Jewish Community or Synagogue in Sulzbach in the time frame of 1817. Maybe we have the wrong "Sulzbach." Nathan's father married someone from "Floss," which is not too far away. There is a name change from the Fraenkel branch we believe is our branch of the family from Sulzbach. We have documents that state Nathan was from Sulzbach, and I thought if I can confirm where this school is, it would prove that indeed he was from this area.

Family: Neftelberger

Location: Sulzbach, Bavaria

Document Found: Annual Report on Primary School in Prussia timeframe with my 4th Great Grandfathers Name (Nathan Neftelberger) Dated: 1850/51

Notes: Nathan Neftelberger, age 14, From Sulzbach, Father: Handlesmann (Merchant)

Does not note: Where the school located

Fathers name: Wolf Hirsch Neftelberger (Unknown)

Mother: Fanny (Fradel) Boskowitz (Floss, Germany)

1837: Semmerl and Naftalie (Nathan) births

I tried many avenues to see if there was a historian or documentation on schools in 1840-1860. I've also emailed a German Genealogist in Sulzbach that specialist in the Jewish community there and still waiting for a response (Understanding that she probably has a backlog of emails). Any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Simplest & Best Way For Extended Family To View/Comment On Digital Photos? #general

Martin Kaminer

Hi All-
What have people found is the best way to 'crowdsource' knowledge about a collection of hundreds/thousands of family photos among several generations of extended family with widely varying (but on average low) technical ability?  We have basic metadata for many of the images, which span nearly 150 years, though there are many errors and omissions that need to be fixed.  I'd also love to allow for people to comment with their own stories and recollections even on photos we've fully identified.  What is the best, simplest but also most useful software/system/site for doing this?  Everything I've seen is either too complex or too basic. Welcome your guidance.

Re: another search for Karin #usa

If you are seeking help from others, it would be helpful if we had ages or years.
There are several Stephen Mintzs on FB for example. Is the son grown up already?
Have you tried contacting the Kibbutz?
Do you have the husband's name?
Detectives need all the clues you can provide.
