Hello, 

I've been researching by Latvian side, from Rezekne. 

I am told my relative, Moshe Shmuel Goldberg, was humiliated by being made to force to sweep the streets. He was then gathered in the town square with other Jews and murdered. 

I am seeking to find documents to prove his tragic fate. Any help on where to look would be great. If anyone has researched the Shoah in Rezekne and could share any info, that'd be much appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for the thinking it might be Varick. I tried a reverse search in the census for 1910, looking at both Varick in Brooklyn and Manhattan, but there was either no "120" or no Yurowitz at that address. The same was true for a different suggestion, NEVINS. I have not found the Yurowitz at that address either in 1910.

Years ago, I visited an office in PHila, and obtained several sheets of records for my father and others for the period 1935-45.

 

I can’t recall if there was a charge or “suggested donation”.  Somehow, I think there was.   The location of the records changed over the years, first to the Balch (sic) Institute, also in Phila, and then to Temple University Archives.  A Google or similar search engine search will give “you” the exact holders of the materials.  I believe that the LDS/Family Search have films, but I cannot quickly see if they are online.   I no longer live in Phila or nearby,  and Temple is closed due to Covid virus.

Dear all,

Maybe someone in the Toledo area can help me or other relatives...

I’m doing some family history research for my mom. I read a really nice article on the toledoattic.org website about the Birmingham neighbourhood and it's Hungarian heritage.

My mom was adopted in 1965 in Northern Michigan. She had however a Hungarian-Italian father (we think from Toledo). In 1965 he was 34.  His dad was Italian and his mom Hungarian.  From the paperwork back in 1965 it says he was a college graduate, a successful business man, had remodelled homes and sold them. He had very dark brown curly hair, dark brown eyes and a dark olive complexion.  He was a good swimmer, diver, generally liked sports and he was a good singer.  He had excellent health, worked hard and was enthusiastic. 

 

He would probably be 89 now. 

 

It’s a really interesting story about my mothers search for her father.  She started off looking for him after she found her biological mother (named Grace Schutte, pronounced shoot) about 20 years ago.  Her biological mother was 22 in 1965 when my mother was born and her father and her must have met 1964 prior and we think in Toledo, possibly at a bar.  They both liked to sing and Grace was an entertainer and possibly also a sales clerk.  Grace hasn’t told us much.  It says in the adoption paperwork that they were expected to be married and then he didn’t accept his domestic responsibilities to want to raise their child.  She showed up at her sister's house back in Michigan pregnant and then my mom was adopted. It was a closed adoption.

 

Since she’s started looking she’s done a few DNA tests.  50% came back Jewish heritage… probably from the father’s mother's side but a few generations back because on the adoption paperwork it says her father was Protestant.  I'm assuming they must have converted during or after one of the wars. Anyways my mom's DNA is on my heritage, ancestry and 23andme, if you want to look her up and compare feel free or I have GEDmatch and can use kitnumbers.  Ruth Skop is my mom's name.

 

Maybe you could help me out with some clues…probably a long shot but doesn’t hurt to try.          Looking forward to hearing from anyone!

What happened to Charles Smolenski #unitedkingdom #usa #germany

My greatgrandmother Sheina/Szeyna/Jane/Jenny Cohen nee Smolenski appears on the 1901 census with her two sisters Chayka/Annie Kalinsky nee Smolenski and Tilly/Matilda/Toby (Taube?) Bernstein nee Smolenski. I would dearly love to know where they came from. They lived in Liverpool and Manchester, England. It is believed they had brothers. The census states Sheina was 17 but her youngest daughter thought she was nearer to 14. On the 1901 census the three sisters state they came from Russia but Chayka's grandson told me it could be Memel which, at the time was East Prussia

Family lore tells of a brother "Charlie" who visited them from USA before WW1. On Ancestry, I found a Charles Smolenski who travelled from New York to Liverpool in 1912 aged 22 and originally from Germany which could seem to fit. However, I can't find his original arrival in USA nor his return after his visit

So what happened to him and where did he come from?
Any suggestions welcome. I have searched and searched for their place of birth but with no joy, hence trying a different angle and looking for "Charlie"

A few people out there might remember me when I was more active in all things Proskurov.  That was my mother's hometown and she and her family (miraculously) survived the 1919 pogrom.   I had always heard that there was a Proskurov shul in NYC but that it doesn't exist anymore.  And that it was established in the late 19th turn of the 20th century. Two of my mother's uncles managed to get out before WWI and that way they were able secure affidavits for the rest of the family in the 1920's.

In regards to the name of the town, I have always insisted that we only use Proskurov because as most people know renaming it Khelmnitzky was salt on the wound of the Jewish people.  Bogdan Khelmnitzky was one of history's most destructive anti-semites.  In fact within recent years the existing Jewish community has asked the town government to change the name back to Proskurov but they refused.

My mother was the fourth daughter born to my grandparents. She was born at the end of January in London, England, and the doctor told my grandmother not to bother too much about this child as she was sickly and not expected to live. My grandmother prevailed and my mother survived. Her birth was registered in April -- although the registration gave her actual birth date. So there's another reason for a delayed registration.

There were plenty of Jewish prostitutes all around.

Sholem Ashe's play "Got fun nekome" (The Gold of Vengeance) from 1906 is about a brothel in Poland.

New York City's Lower East Side was full of prostitutes.  In fact, my father told a the story of his first school day. Apparently his parents didn't have time to take him and had left him home so a neighbor volunteered to take him.  He much later found out that she was a prostitute.

A quick search or two on the Internet will provide plenty of information.

Fani Jurowics in NY with Berta Davidowitz : Ship Manifest #general

Dear Group,

My cousin, Fani Jurovits (born 1887), arrived in NY on the Bremen, 24 Sep 1913. Fani was my great-grandfather's baby sister. It was nice to see Fani's father as the last address in Europe. Moses Jurovics, her father, was my g-g-gf, and my namesake.

On the second page of the manifest (attached), Line 26 has Fani listed, together with her cousin, Berta Davidowitz, as going to some address that starts with 120, perhaps Nevins. I am trying to make out the name of her cousin that was her destination, as well as the address. The name is overwrittne. Can anyone read the destination?

The supposed cousin never showed up and Fani and Berta DAVIDOWITZ were released to the Clara de Hirsch Home (see the detained passenger list, attached).

I also checked the Bremen departure lists, but for 1913, they only seem to start in October, and there is a gap back to 1908.

I have found Fani's 1919 NY marriage to Jacob Zeisler, a widower. I would like to find out who this "destination" cousin was and, where was Fani between 1913 and 1919, and how were Fani and Berta related.

I am researching my grandfather’s town of origin which is now called Stalavichy.  I am unable to find much about the Jewish community there in the late 1800’s.  Any suggestions would be most welcome.  My grandfather and his brother were apparently somewhat educated before they arrived in the US.  Grandfather studied at Cooper Union and became a civil engineer.  Great uncle was a pharmacist.  Would like to know more about how Jewish boys would have been educated in Stalavichy in late 1800’s.

I will be happy to pay a fee for a search for Auerbach records. My great-uncle Abraham Auerbach arrived in Philadelphia from Belaya Tserkov, then-Russia now-Ukraine, in 1906. Sam Auerbach, a relative of whom I know nothing, had probably lived in Philadelphia prior to 1906, he signed from Abraham on his citizenship application. Abraham lived in Philadelphia all his life, his son Solomon was a pharmacist.

Hi,

There has always been a lot of movement between the South of Tunisia and Libya - my own grandfather, born in Tunis, spent a year in Tripoli at one point. And we have some MIMOUN/MEÏMON/etc. in Tunisia, which might match your MIMON in Libya. For the other names, they're mostly unheard of in Tunisia, except LABI which we generally think came from Libya in the first place... To me these names sound a lot more Libyan than Tunisian - with the small proviso that we are rather poor in BMD records for the Tunisian South bordering Libya, so I might get the wrong impression. But we do have tombstones indexes (in Zarzis and Gabès), and these names don't appear in them afaik.

Also, it seems quite an achievement to have arrived to the early 1800s in Libya, I would love to hear more on how you did this. But the brick wall in Tunisia at this period is at least as hard as in Libya, if not harder, especially for the Tunisian South. The earliest records we have are those of protected subjects of the French consulate in Tunis from the 1830s (see my book here, together with L. Nedjar: https://www.genealoj.org/fr/boutique/proteges-israelites-consulat-france-tunis-1830-1913), with very few Libyans. There is for instance a SERUSI of Tripoli (de Barbarie) in 1832, a couple of ZARD in 1850 and 1890, an AÏNOUS in 1846, a HASSAN in 1893. There are a few Libyan Jews in the archives of the French consulates at Tunis and Tripoli, held at the Centre des Archives Diplomatiques in Nantes, France, but mostly from the second half of the 19th century / early 20th.

From a late 1890s photo taken in BULAWAYO of six men there is my great-great Uncle MAX CLARKE/SZKLARKIEWICZ and my teenage grandfather SAMUEL CLARKE and on the back of the photo is the name ELLENBOGEN. I see several ELLENBOGENS on ancestry websites and note they were from near JEDWABNE where MAX was born, also had lived in LIVERPOOL, UK, as did our family in the early 1900s, and then some were in Bulawayo too, no doubt on the photo. I have communicated with one Ellenbogen descendant, who did not know enough to connect our families. It's a long shot but if anyone has any information, I look forward to hearing from you.

It seems that people get too hung up on "my work, my tree". It's not a contest of who has the largest or "the best" tree, though some seem to go that route. I think of it more in terms of uncovering the truth. 
Yes, you put in many years of research and built a well documented ancestors' tree, are you going to take it to the grave? What's the use of having it hidden or only shown in private to a few? It's your right of course to do that, but I would lighten up and think of it more in terms of researchers displaying/publishing their work for all to see.
I think that quite the contrary, having your research out in the open especially if you have done a great job with proper documentation, will correct errors that others may introduce now or in the future and will survive the test of time... This could be of particular interest when remote relatives bump into your research now or years later...
I for myself am very thankful to a couple of relatives that worked on their tree and made it possible for me years later to connect my research to theirs, many years after they have expired...
Obviously that's my opinion, quite a few seem to disagree.

A French investigation journalist reported on "Jewish white slave trade" in Argentina (1927).
 To be compared to Joseph Pulitzer,   Albert Londres (1884 – 1932) was a French journalist and writer. 
One of the inventors of investigative journalism, Londres not only reported news but created it, and reported it from a personal perspective.
He criticized abuses of colonialism such as forced labour.
Albert Londres gave his name to a journalism prize, the Prix Albert-Londres, for Francophone journalists (Wikipedia).
 Some of his most important "Reports from foreign countries" have been reprinted in 2017.

 One is "On way to Buenos Aires, 1927" and is dedicated to what was called "White slave trade", the old name for human trafficking of white women to countries out of Europa. Londres started his investigation with gangs from South of France (remember the movie "French connection"), how they take control of young women, how they cross ocean on a ship and how they organize their trade and live in Argentina. 

Some French young women tell their story.
Paper is 145 pages long.

 

As this trade was also organized by a lot of other international criminal gangs, 5 pages are devoted with "(Jewish) Polaks" title to the women concerned by our posts : how they were "negotiated" in Poland with a lot of promises to their families, and how they were exploited by their Jewish pimp in Buenos Aires.

 

These are the facts, not fake news...

 

Unfortunately to you, these pages are in French, nobody is perfect...

But I can scan them and send to you, ask by private mail.

 

In the same 2017 book, there is a large report "The wandering Jew has come home" (1930, 160 pages).
Londres traveled from Poland to Palestine and back, giving words to our "Vanished world" of Roman Vishniac's pictures.

The correct date is 8 of Heshvan which corresponds with the Secular date 14 October (Of that year)
12 is a misreading of the word "yom" which means day.

Je recherche une famille liée à Samson Brockman, a quitté sa famille en 1920 dans le village d'Opoczno, en Pologne, et immigré en Palestine. Après plusieurs années, Samson Brockman est retourné rendre visite à sa famille en Pologne, où il a rencontré Frida de la famille Rajswing ils sont retournés ensemble en Palestine et en 1924, ils sont mariés.

We are still looking for the origins of AKIBA (KIve) STEIN OR STERN, born in Nowy Sacz Galicia around 1805. He lived in Màd Hungary as from 1824 we think. We found the family in Màd thanks to the a lady called Marian Frank  but nothing about his life before he left Nowy Sacz or his origins, or birthdate. we found information that there was a big fire in his birthtown in 1854 which destroyed all documents.I tried the authorities in Poland but got no reply. We would be grateful for any information.

The comment refer to a civil marriage, but the marriage was also registered in the books of the Jewish Community of Vienna.

this is also the meaning of Russian -ov (and Polish -ow)
In your searching list MESCHER/MEZAK had decided to throw this suffix out. for convenience.
why another your family WEINER/VENER had changed W to V? for convenience. because they lived, I'm sure, in Russia and russian language has no W.

Hi,
I am looking for any information related to my background. I don't know much about my family. My father, Sulim Levites, had four brothers: Israel, Aron, Henrique, and Blandina. All siblings moved to Brazil, first in Bahia and then São Paulo. My grandparents' names are Enta and Shaia. I was able to find one record with the name Ienta Levitis (https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/jowbr.php?rec=J_MOLDAVIA_0070836). Not sure if she is my grandmother though and nothing about my grandfather.

Moreover, my father and his siblings were born in Otaci. I was able to find many records by looking for the Surname "Levites" and phonetically similar. How do I know if any is related to me?
