Hi Bill,

I have a SHULDINER on my maternal side from Saukenai, Lithuania, who changed his surname to ROSENBERG. He came to Cape Town.

My husband’s Park paternal family: Beletje Betsy Elizabeth David BUIJTENKANT (1818-1882, father David Isaac. Mother Bloeme Levie KOEKOEK) who married Simon Hartog PARK (1814-1872). Their family left Amsterdam to London for a few years (cigar makers-sound familiar) then to Boston about 1862. Many stayed in England.
The extended PARK family that stayed in Amsterdam died in the Holocaust (over 250).

I have uploaded to Billion Graves a lot of PARK and BUIJTENKANT headstones from Amsterdam and Boston.
Other names BRUSKET, MOK, VOORZANGER, FRANKFORT, GOEDHART.

Moses Hyam or Hyam Moses - name reversal in early 19th century #unitedkingdom

jlevy2008@...

Hello,

I'm trying to establish the full names of the parents of Benjamin Louis HYAM, born about 1817 in London, died 1870 in Swansea

In the censuses of 1841 and 1851, Benjamin was recorded with his mother, Sarah, and her second husband, Cosman COHEN.

On 19th November 1856, he married Lucy, the daughter of Jacob HADIDA in London's Great Synagogue. The transcribed marriage record (https://synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=8176) shows that his father's Hebrew name was Chaim. This matches the inscription on his gravestone (https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Cemeteries/Swansea_Cemeteries/Burial_Townhill_A_293.htm) which gives his full name as Binyamin Yehuda ben Chayim. However, according to the 1851 Anglo-Jewry, his father was Moses HYAM (https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/c1851.php?rec=C1851C_0019985).

Now, on 3rd June 1812, a Hyam MOSES (Chayim ben Mosheh Shvab) married Sarah LEVY (Sarah bat Yehuda-Leib) in the Great Synagogue. See here https://synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=2273

My question is whether it is likely that Hyam MOSES reversed his names and became known as Moses HYAM, with his wife, two sons and future generations bearing the surname HYAM?

Regards,

Justin Levy

All this places : Moldova, Slovakia, Penza Oblast are far away one from the other  especially the Penza Oblast - check it on the map. If in the Penza Oblast Jewish community exist, it it possible they spread east to Moldova and Slovakia some years ago and the two branches of the family keep the original name with different spelling according to the local way of writing.

The male name Shapsei #names #lithuania

Jill Whitehead

I am seeking an English equivalent of the first name Shapsei who was the father of Samuel Servian who was a cousin of my grandfather who was also called Samuel Servian (ne Serwianski). Shapsei and his son were born in Kovno in Lithuania, whereas my Servians came from nearby Sejny in Suwalki Gubernia in NE Poland. I have come across Samuel as being a translation of Shapsei, but this seems unlikely as his son was called Samuel. Certain names are repeated in the Servian/Serwianski family (e.g. Mordecai/Max, Josiel/Joseph, Baruch/Barnet, Abraham/Albert, Jacob/Julius) but Shapsei is not one of them - could this be a pet name for another name?

There are several Samuel Servian/Server/Serviansky's (all cousins) in the same generation who lived in variously Liverpool, UK; Middlesbrough, UK (a rabbinical line who came from Vistytis in Lithuania which used to be in Suwalki Gubernia until 1919), Chicago, Pittsburgh, California, Grand Rapids, Toronto and New York. Most have two first names. My grandfather was Samuel Salmon (Solomon), and his Liverpool cousin was Samuel Henry (presumably after Hirsch?). Therefore it is possible Shapsei is one part of a two part name.

I would be interested to hear if anyone else has a Shapsei in their family and what the English version of the name was most likely to be.

I doubt they were relatives. Camenca, Moldova, is located some 450 miles east of Kamienka, Slovakia. If the last & given names are common Jewish names, there are good chances to find remote people with the same names.

"High Rabbi" in Poland, Ger Rabbi #poland #warsaw #rabbinic

Elizabeth Jackson

My grandfather, Hirsch Wolf Ingberg, moved from Warsaw to Minden Germany in 1913.  My mother was born in 1918.  She recalled her father making annual trips to Poland to visit what she referred to as the"High Rabbi".  I believe this may have been the Ger Rabbi.  Mother thought her Father saw him in Krakow.

Researching this, I find the following regarding the Ger Rabbi for this time period:

Rebbe Avraham Mordechai Alter (December 25, 1866 – June 3, 1948), also known as the Imrei Emes. Son of Rabbi Leib Alter. Gerrer Rebbe from 1905 to 1948.

I know very little about my grandfather so I am very interested in learning who this "High Rabbi" was and what would be the reason for the annual visit.

Where would this have taken place?  Am I right in assuming the "High Rabbi" was the Ger Rabbi?  How might I learn more about my family's connection to this sect?

Any help/suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Elizabeth Jackson
