Re: Who knows Moldavanski or Kushnir? #ukraine

My name is Dov Oppenheim of Israel.
My great grandfather from my mother side was Zvi Kushnir from Ukraine. He was born on 1887, his fathers name was Efraim Kushnir.
As far as I know he had 2 sisters that moved to Argentina with him at 1910.
I have no idea of other family left in the Ukraine, I do know that Kushnir is a very common name there.
Your great grandmothers name  Betya(Basya) Chaimovna Kushnir suggest that her fathers name was Chaim.
I will try to look at records from Polonnoye area.

Re: Seeking descendants of Dorothy (Dora) FINKEL + Maurice KRAMER #usa

Sherri Bobish

Hi Boris,

On the 1940 census there is a Dorothy & Morris KRAMER living in Brooklyn.
She is 30, born Pennsylvania, bookbinder in printing shop.
He is 36, born England, operator on ladies dresses.
They have no children.
Living with them is their niece Ethel GOODMAN, 17, born Pennsylvania, salesgirl in department store.

Perhaps knowing where they lived in April 1930, and that no children are listed as living with them, will help you figure out if the person you found on the manifest is the one you seek, or not.

As has been previously stated, Vetter is the ***German*** word for Cousin.
The ***Yiddish*** word usually transliterated as "fetter", does mean uncle in English

Re: Vetting family tree submissions to genealogy sites for data soundness #general

What program do you use for your tree on your computer?
I'd like to have mine offline.
I have been led astray by misinformation too many times.
People seem to copy other people's trees without checking - problem on Ancestry.
I don't know about other sites.

Re: Har Nebo Cemetery in Phila #photographs #usa

Josephine Rosenblum

I have a different opinion of Har Nebo.  Years ago, I paid a professional genealogist to discover where in Philadelphia my grandfather was interred.  I had his death certificate with the exact date of death in 1909.  When the researcher found my grandfather--Sigmund SEGAL--was at Har Nebo, I asked the cemetery for a photo.  Their reply was they did not have anyone by that name, so I paid a second researcher, who agreed that Har Nebo was correct.  My second cousins, who went to the cemetery office personally, were told they absolutely did not have Sigmund SEGAL.

My cousins have many other SEGAL relatives there and visited their graves.  They looked around, just in case Sigmund was there, but they did not see a tombstone for him.  They do not read Hebrew.  As they were leaving, they turned around once more, and there, on the back of a marble stone, was "Sigmund SEGAL" as clear as can be!  The front of the stone is all Hebrew.  He is interred just 2-3 graves away from his sister and mother, each with English lettering.

I contacted Har Nebo again, and their response was that their records show him as "Sigmund SAGEL", and they would not change their records, although the death certificate and stone clearly spell the name SEGAL.  Their reason--their record has been there since 1909, so they won't change it, even to correct their mistake.

Between Sigmund's grave and those of his sister and mother is a grave for a woman who has no relationship to any of them.  I thought Orthodox cemeteries did not allow that.  He had only one wife, my grandmother, and since he was only 29 when he died, this unknown woman cannot be related.

Since then, his stone has toppled, due to sunken ground.

This is why I have a negative opinion of this cemetery.

Seeking descendants of Dorothy (Dora) FINKEL + Maurice KRAMER #usa

Dorothy FINKEL was born in Philadelphia to Joseph and Sarah.

Maurice KRAMER was born in Manchester, England to Reuben and Rachel.

They married ca. 1930 in New York.

There are two ship manifests listing Dora Kramer & two children, Joyce and Michael Philip (1940 UK to US and 1944 US to UK) but I am not certain it is the right family.

Any leads are appreciated.

Please  help others by responding to the group and listing  all related names, conjectures, speculations, etc.

Missing Manifest for Joseph CAPSON (KAPSON) #russia

Rachelle Litt

I am looking for a missing manifest for Joseph CAPSON (KAPSON). Birthdate May 10, 1885. His Naturalization papers  in 1927 say he came on the ship named Main(e) from Bremen to New York on Jan 26, 1906. fro Sobolinka Russia. When researching this ship on the Ellis Island website, I found that the Maine did not sail internationally during that year. It was stricktly US based travel. His 1910 census says he came in 1904. In 1908 he was living in Newark NJ and in 1911 Cleveland OH. where his daughter Elsie Capson was born on March 5th.  I cannot find any records on the family in OH at all either.  His brother Julius Capson, came under the name Berka Balta per his naturalization record. I found his manifest listed as Berka Batta. He came on the ship New York Jan 15, 1905. from Sobolivka Russia via Southampton and is listed as going to a cousin Lewis Gross at 201 Charlton Street Newark NJ- same city where Joseph was headed.  I cannot find info info on Lewis Gross at that address either to see how they were related.  Any help on solving these problems would be greatly appreciated.

My ancestral surname is Kriwiatychi from ORLA, Poland. I know that a family member left Poland for Australia. His name was Aizik Kriviaticki / Krivyatitski, born 1906. He was in Camp Fohrenwald after the war, and departed Jan 6, 1948 for Fremantle, Western Australia arriving on Feb. 26, 1948. I believe that he married Miriam Rosenberg in 1949, and he was alive for the 1980 voters List for the 1980 election in Victoria, Australia. The last known address I can find is from Kooyong, Victoria.

Anyone know of this family?
Thank you,

Re: German Citizenship under Article 116 #germany

Peter Lobbenberg

I applied in June 2018 and was told it could take up to two years, although "in the old days" it used to be much quicker - but in the event citizenship took "only" 14 months and my new passport another two months.  That's from the UK and through the German Embassy in London, England, who were extremely helpful throughout.  Among other factors that I'd imagine could affect how long it takes might be (1) the country from which you're applying, (2) the backlog at any given time, (3) any issues or problems with the particular application or the supporting documentation, and of course (4) COVID and lockdown.

Re: Surname TAJWIJ #names

Tawil is a Sephardic name and there are many people with this surname. There are several such families with this name in NY.  Tawil means "long" in Arabic, and people with this name are usually  Cohanim.
