Re: Seeking descendants of Dorothy (Dora) FINKEL + Maurice KRAMER #usa

Renee Steinig

Ancestry has an image of the birth record of Dora Finkle, born 30 Sept 1906 in Philadelphia to Joseph Finkle and Sarah Axlerod. This information is a reasonable match to Dorothy Finkel's on her 1930 NYC marriage record, extracted on FamilySearch: born 1909 in Philadelphia, parents Joseph Finkel and Sarah Axlerod. On the other hand, Dora Kramer on the July 1940 manifest does not appear to be the same woman: she was reportedly born in London in 1897; her husband (mentioned on the second page of the manifest) was Harry; and her son Michael was 10, so probably born before Dorothy Finkel married.

Also on Ancestry: the WWII draft registration card of Maurice Kramer, born 29 Jan 1904 Manchester, England; wife Dorothy; address 1647 Union St., Brooklyn. Possibly he was the Maurice Kramer, 39, 1470 Sterling Pl., Brooklyn, who naturalized in Eastern District court in Dec. 1943. You might want to order a copy of his Petition ($10) via NARA Order Online ( once service there is resumed.

Both 1647 Union Street and 1470 Sterling Place are within a mile or so of Prospect Place, the address on the 1940 census that Sherri Bobbish found. BTW, I found that census on FamilySearch after Sherri mentioned it; it didn't show up on Ancestry.

The Social Security Death Index lists a Dorothy Kramer born 30 Sept 1906. She died in Nov 1977; last residence: Brooklyn NY 11235. A Dorothy Kramer with these dates is on FindaGrave; she's buried at Floral Park Cemetery in South Brunswick, NJ. A photo of her grave is included (see attachment); father's name is hard to make out, but it doesn't look like Yosef.

Also in the SSDI: a Maurice Kramer who was born on 29 Jan 1904 and died on 14 Dec 2001; his last residence was also Brooklyn 11235. No Morris/Maurice Kramer who died in 2001 is on FindaGrave.

There are two ship manifests listing Dora Kramer & two children, Joyce and Michael Philip (1940 UK to US and 1944 US to UK) but I am not certain it is the right family.

Re: Other names for Yitzchak? #names

In addition to name variants, there were also pronunciation variants.  My maternal GGF, Leizar Wolf ROSENBERG had a first and then second wife, both named Leah.  By each wife, Leizer had a son named Itzaak (or Israel Itzaak).  The family pronounced the name of the first one "Yitzaahk" and the second one "Itzik."

Re: Jewish Prison Commander - Kharkov 1923 #ukraine

Dear Iryna,
I am writing to ask if you have any information regarding  records of birth or marriage in Kharkov between 1900 and 1920.
I am trying to trace my grandfather, Naum Beckerman, who was said to come from Kharkov, and who would have been born sometime between 1890 and 1902/3.
It is possible that my grandmother, Eugenia Zaslavsky  married him in 1918. What indisputably happened was that my father was born in Feb 1919, though that may have been in Kharkov, Kertch or Genischesk.
I would be so grateful for any information you may be able to pass on;
with many thanks,
Jane Beckerman

Re: Radziejow, Poland #poland

I have several ancestors from Radziejow, but do not know how to research them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My fathers grandfather, my GGG, (Maier Löwin Ordewer 1853-?, was supposedly one of twelve boys, eleven of whom became Rabbis. I am unable to find any trace of the eleven. Can you suggest a search path for me to use? I do not believe any of them emigrated to the U.S. I am a first generation American, having arrived as an infant on Ellis Island 9/1/1938 on the last safe crossing of the S.S. Saint Louis, prior to the 'Voyage of the Damned."

In addition I am searching for:
Löwin, Lowin, Lewin, Loewin, Ordewer, Wegener, Malz, Solomon, Kornberg.

Re: Who knows Moldavanski or Kushnir? #ukraine

My name is Dov Oppenheim of Israel.
My great grandfather from my mother side was Zvi Kushnir from Ukraine. He was born on 1887, his fathers name was Efraim Kushnir.
As far as I know he had 2 sisters that moved to Argentina with him at 1910.
I have no idea of other family left in the Ukraine, I do know that Kushnir is a very common name there.
Your great grandmothers name  Betya(Basya) Chaimovna Kushnir suggest that her fathers name was Chaim.
I will try to look at records from Polonnoye area.

Hi Boris,

On the 1940 census there is a Dorothy & Morris KRAMER living in Brooklyn.
She is 30, born Pennsylvania, bookbinder in printing shop.
He is 36, born England, operator on ladies dresses.
They have no children.
Living with them is their niece Ethel GOODMAN, 17, born Pennsylvania, salesgirl in department store.

Perhaps knowing where they lived in April 1930, and that no children are listed as living with them, will help you figure out if the person you found on the manifest is the one you seek, or not.

I'd like to have mine offline.

People seem to copy other people's trees without checking - problem on Ancestry.
I don't know about other sites.

Re: Har Nebo Cemetery in Phila #photographs #usa

Josephine Rosenblum

I have a different opinion of Har Nebo.  Years ago, I paid a professional genealogist to discover where in Philadelphia my grandfather was interred.  I had his death certificate with the exact date of death in 1909.  When the researcher found my grandfather--Sigmund SEGAL--was at Har Nebo, I asked the cemetery for a photo.  Their reply was they did not have anyone by that name, so I paid a second researcher, who agreed that Har Nebo was correct.  My second cousins, who went to the cemetery office personally, were told they absolutely did not have Sigmund SEGAL.

My cousins have many other SEGAL relatives there and visited their graves.  They looked around, just in case Sigmund was there, but they did not see a tombstone for him.  They do not read Hebrew.  As they were leaving, they turned around once more, and there, on the back of a marble stone, was "Sigmund SEGAL" as clear as can be!  The front of the stone is all Hebrew.  He is interred just 2-3 graves away from his sister and mother, each with English lettering.

I contacted Har Nebo again, and their response was that their records show him as "Sigmund SAGEL", and they would not change their records, although the death certificate and stone clearly spell the name SEGAL.  Their reason--their record has been there since 1909, so they won't change it, even to correct their mistake.

Between Sigmund's grave and those of his sister and mother is a grave for a woman who has no relationship to any of them.  I thought Orthodox cemeteries did not allow that.  He had only one wife, my grandmother, and since he was only 29 when he died, this unknown woman cannot be related.

Since then, his stone has toppled, due to sunken ground.

This is why I have a negative opinion of this cemetery.

Missing Manifest for Joseph CAPSON (KAPSON) #russia

Rachelle Litt

I am looking for a missing manifest for Joseph CAPSON (KAPSON). Birthdate May 10, 1885. His Naturalization papers  in 1927 say he came on the ship named Main(e) from Bremen to New York on Jan 26, 1906. fro Sobolinka Russia. When researching this ship on the Ellis Island website, I found that the Maine did not sail internationally during that year. It was stricktly US based travel. His 1910 census says he came in 1904. In 1908 he was living in Newark NJ and in 1911 Cleveland OH. where his daughter Elsie Capson was born on March 5th.  I cannot find any records on the family in OH at all either.  His brother Julius Capson, came under the name Berka Balta per his naturalization record. I found his manifest listed as Berka Batta. He came on the ship New York Jan 15, 1905. from Sobolivka Russia via Southampton and is listed as going to a cousin Lewis Gross at 201 Charlton Street Newark NJ- same city where Joseph was headed.  I cannot find info info on Lewis Gross at that address either to see how they were related.  Any help on solving these problems would be greatly appreciated.
