A man named Udel Berg, now deceased, was a member of the Suffolk County (NY) Bar Association when I had my law practice there.

Re: Looking for family of Julius JACOB who emigrated to Australia in 1939 from Willmars, Germany #general #germany

Rodney Eisfelder

Dear Dmjacobs,
Julius Jacob, born 5-May-1876, died 14-Jul-1957 is buried next to Berta Jacob (nee Rheinganum), born 11-Jun-1887, died 5-Jul-1941. She is presumably his wife.
You can do the search yourself from http://www.rookwoodjewishcemetery.com.au/
and view the headstone.
Several files in the National Archives https://www.naa.gov.au/  state that he arrived on the "NIAGARA" on 11-Mar-1939
however, I haven't found Berta's arrival documented. The evidence may be in one of Julius's files, which have not yet been digitized.

I hope this helps,

Re: parents as "cousins" on Ancestry.com #dna

Alexander Press

Just a quick follow-up regarding Ancestry.com. Going over my niece's list of shared matches, I was able to check several documentable fourth and fifth cousins, all correctly identified as such on Ancestry. From this I gather that a "4th-6th cousin" or a "5th-8th cousin" may be just that and not some phantasmic relationship. On the other hand, I have found 23 and Me virtually useless for establishing relationships. Whereas Ancestry sometimes understates them (e.g., a third cousin identified as "4th-6th"), 23 and Me clearly overstates them. Thus I would avoid lumping the two services together. Ancestry is actually so good that I wish it could be a bit better, but my hunch is that it provides enough information to allow a skilled codebreaker to cluster the matches along discernible branches even with the interference created by endogamy. One complaint I have is that there's a mysterious canyon between 90 cm and 60 cm, which customer service has been unable to explain.

Re: How to make sense of two death records that don't make sense to me #germany

Robert Hanna

My two Max brothers were Moshe and Mordechai.  Neither one of them came to the US, but their descendants Anglicized both their names to Max.  It took me a long time and several documents to figure out that they weren't the same person, but were, in fact, brothers.

Viewmate tombstone photo #photographs #belarus #translation

Harlan Weller

I have uploaded a picture of my ggm's tombstone from Svir as Viewmate # 82731 and asked for assistance in translating.  Two people have been kind enough to respond, but they were unable to read the material at the bottom of the tombstone.  Luckily, I have the attached picture from 100 years ago which shows my ggf standing next to the stone.  Perhaps that will help.

p.s. The newer picture was downloaded from a newspaper article about 5 years ago (I think it was in Israel Today) reporting on a college student trip to fix up the cemetery.  Imagine my surprise when I saw a photograph that accompanied the article and recognized it as a picture of my ggm's tombstone.

Re: Daniel Levy out west #usa

Sherri Bobish

Hi Carol,

This doesn't answer your question on what became of Daniel LEVY, but have you seen the 1902 newspaper article from The NY Evening World about Isabella Levy's will?  It lists her husband as Ernest, and names the other children.  None of those listed is named Daniel.

You can see the article by searching Isabella Levy (do an exact search) at:
www.fultonhistory.com
It is a free site.

Also, Daniel's birth is listed in the NYC birth index on 03 Jul 1861.  Parents Ernest and Isabella.

Good luck in your search,

Re: Can Udel be a Female Given Name?# names # hungary

Sally Bruckheimer

Udel is usually a woman's name. I  have never seen it as male, although Idel can be. I have only seen Judel, Yudel, and Iudel for Juda or Yehuda.

"While researching names related to an uncle of my late mother I bumped twice  in Familysearch.org into Udel BLASZ from Bardejov,Slovakia. Once it was identified as a male born in 1874 and next "he"

married in 1894 with Salomon FINGERHUT from Wisnicza (Nowy Wisnicz) whom I clearly located on JRI-PL. I know that Udel is a nickname of Yehuda. Any  ideaS?"
