Re: Chasing a Mystery in Philly, and Looking for Puzzle Pieces: Abraham Louis Snader #usa

You can find the Death Certificate on Ancestry.   Date of Death, Feb 14, not the 17th, back then Montefiore records listed date of funeral...not date of death.  Use the name, Leah Fleysker, that's how it's indexed.

Re: How to make sense of two death records that don't make sense to me #germany

It's my understanding that it is very common for multiple family members to be named for the same ancestor. My mother has 3 cousins on her mother's side all named Michael for their grandmother. My great-grandmother and her siblings all had daughters named Jente for their mother. I've also seen numerous instances of children named for their siblings who died as infants. Repeated names show up everywhere and it can create a fair amount of confusion.

I will say it would be unusual for a man to give two of his living children the same name, even if the children have two different wives. But for two cousins to have the same given name, be in the same profession, and then name their children for the same ancestor wouldn't be unheard of at all.

Dear Fredel,

Thank you for your response. The document (VM82889) has apparently been mislabeled by (I just compared the document described there as Ernestine’s death certificate to VM82889 to make sure it wasn’t I who did the mislabeling.) As far as I knew, Ernestine’s only husband was Isaac Seelig, my third great grandfather. Perhaps she had a second husband. Thank you for letting me know the image is mislabeled. I’ll change the information accompanying the image on ViewMate.

Best wishes,

My father's written name was Udel (or it could be Jdel, hard to tell from the handwriting on a document). On other things, his name was Yehuda. His American name was Julius. His mother's name was Udlea (written). Her American name was Ida. Hope this helps.

To the original poster:

It may help to know that the last time Abraham Kaslick appears in the Boston city directories is 1924.

That may be of some help when searching arrival records of the Immigration Department of the Palestine Zionist Executive, mentioned by Alan.

I think the info for the city directories was collected the year previous to the date of the publishing (can anyone confirm that, or have better knowledge?)  If so, than Abraham may have left Boston in 1923.

I am looking for birth data for individuals born in and around
Flamersheim before 1850. I do not know precisely where these births
would have been registered Flamersheim is about 10 kilometers south and
east of Euskirchen, so that is where the registry might have been.

Help is appreciated... I am most interested in the Oster family and the

Judy Brandspigel

Burial records including pictures of most headstones from Montreal cemeteries are online at JOWBR (reached through JewishGen).
You can also do research at (Scroll to the bottom -<Research>-and click on Dashboard for links for numerous sites.)
Most (Jewish) burials in Montreal are handled by Paperman. I don’t know about now but in the past they sent me the Burial records that listed all the information about the deceased. They would have prepared this information to send to the government for the preparation of official death certificates.
You might be able to find what you need this way. But if you need official documentation the government of Quebec website is

Looking for information about the fate of Charlotte (Lotte) FRIEDMANN from Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland), who was a refugee in Scotland during the Second World War, living in Aberdeen.  The trail goes cold after 1945, though she doesn't seem to have married or died in Scotland.

Udel is usually a woman's name. I  have never seen it as male, although Idel can be. I have only seen Judel, Yudel, and Iudel for Juda or Yehuda.

"While researching names related to an uncle of my late mother I bumped twice  in into Udel BLASZ from Bardejov,Slovakia. Once it was identified as a male born in 1874 and next "he"

married in 1894 with Salomon FINGERHUT from Wisnicza (Nowy Wisnicz) whom I clearly located on JRI-PL. I know that Udel is a nickname of Yehuda. Any  ideaS?"

Depends on where, I think.   My great-grandfather on my mother's side was named (or the name was transliterated as) "Udel Tevelson [Tawelsoh, Toivelson, etc.]"; name became Hugh Davidson in English.  Oy, these names, these names!  What a pain!

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Thanks to all who responded so far. It seems that Udel is a female given name when and if pronounced properly.
Since I live in Jerusalem I am constantly baffled by contemporary  Israeli(modern) given names shared by both males and females such as : Hadar, Zohar, Tal,Chen, Gal and even the more traditional Yonah. We even have a joke: Tal Cohen and Yonah Levy got married. Who is the bride and who is the bridegroom?

How to Order Death Records From Quebec, Canada? #canada

Jacob Heisler

Hi everyone,

I have three gg-grandparents who died in Montreal, Canada, and I want
to order their death certificates. I'm hoping they will tell me who
their parents are. Unfortunately, Genealogy Quebec (which has images
of marriage records) only has a basic index for death records. And
I've had no luck figuring out exactly how I can order copies of the
death certificates.

Could someone please tell me exactly how I can get a copy of the death
certificates? I should mention the people in question died in 1929,
1935, and 1951, and I am a Canadian citizen but don't live there.

Thank you for your time.

How early do these arrival records of the Immigration Department of the Palestine Zionist Executive start? What's the earliest date available?

Re: Daniel Levy out west #usa

Molly Staub

I know it's a common name, but 40 years ago there was a Daniel Levy who had settled in Bay Shore, , Long Island, many years earlier -- long before the big development boom. I believe he had a grain store and was quite successful, living in a very large house. His wife's name was Ruth.. I am in contact with his granddaughter, if you think there's a match.

Hi Trudy, This is a longshot, but my maternal side was from Ukraine. My ggf Yishea (Yehoshua) Berenson was married to a woman the family knew as Riva the Midwife. After marrying him, she lived in Krasnoye, Podolia Gubernia, Ukraine.. I know she delivered the Loigman children in Krasnoye between 1892 and 1901.The family said she was quite successful and even lectured at a school for midwifery. Her grown children pictured in a 1904-photo I have are all wearing substantial jewelry..I have been searching for her maiden name for three decades! Might this be the Riva/Rivka for whom your relatives were named? Cousin? Molly

I obtained my grandfather’s birth certificate from the Lithuanian state archives and it shows his birthplace as Vidugora. I’ve never been able to find anything about this place - all I know is that it is probably near Pasvalys and/or Ponevezh.

Re: Lincoln Brigade and Spanish Civil War #usa

Judith Berlowitz

This is an important topic, owing to the high number of Jews who volunteered in the International Brigades.  I don't know of a genealogical study of the Jewish Lincolns, though Sugarman's list can be useful, despite some small errors. I initiated a project on which I hope will interest people.  Of course not all those profiled are Jewish.

One issue to consider is that since volunteers signed up through the Comintern, they went to Spain in defiance of US policy and on return many were victims of blacklisting and other types of persecution.  For this reason, some descendants may not be willing to have their relatives' names or noms de guerre publicized.

Shelly, here is your relative, listed among the volunteers on the ALBA website.
