My maternal grandmother is born in Wielkie Oczy in 1880; but I was unable to find her on the birth files of Wielkie Oczy of those times.

I'm a native russian speaker, but this is hard to read. I copied the part where the record talks about her parents. I would say it says she is a daughter of a tradesman Yankel Gersha/Gerta and <don't understand> born Orzhel (Оржель).

There is a lot of text! Are you looking for something specific? Maybe I can tell you which one is the one you need to have translated?

I don't understand what you mean by 'Please respond using the online ViewMate form.' but I can translate it for you here:

It's a record book of population census.

Record number 57
Name Moverman Iuhoyanhel (Иухоянхель) Zejvinovich (Зейвинович) - age (by his looks) 56
and his son Aron - age (by a document) 22

A quick search of these names in russian didn't return any results.

Unfortunately the right side of the book is not visible. If you give me the link to the right side, I'll translate it as well.

Residence or school records for jewish refugees in Vienna WWI #austria-czech

Svetlana Astakhova

Hello everyone,

I came across a record of my husband's father father being a refugee in Vienna during WWI, with his address of residence in Vienna:

1914/1915 Galicia and Bukovina War Refugees Address Directory, Vol. III (excl. Lwow, Krakow): "Klinger Juda, kup., Kuty, 4. VIII. 914. Wiedeń, XX., Karl Meissl-strasse 1. 4, d. 43. 7 os." My husband remembers that his father told him that the family went for vacation and got stuck in Vienna because of the war.

How should I go about searching for names of all the family members who lived with Juda Klinger at this address? One of them was my husband's grandmother and another one his father and we are trying to figure out his name at birth and his date of birth.

I looked up online records of Vienna residents in 1914, 1915, 1916, but didn't find Juda Klinger. Would refugee residents be mentioned in such records?

We know what my husband's father and his siblings went to school in Vienna. Would their names show up in school records of Vienna in 1914 - 1916?

Where else could I search for any records related to this family's residence in Vienna?

Thank you!

Carol, much appreciation for following up on my inquiry.  I am not sure though the entry you found was for the Beyla Levin, especially if  your record is a birth record.  My Beyla was born in 1855 and the record you show has a birth-date of 1891.  Also the father of Beyla that I am looking is named Efraim your entry is Efroim and I believe he is listed as grandfather. What do you think?

Jewish birth records from Kuty around 1905 #austria-czech #galicia #ukraine #poland

Svetlana Astakhova

Hello everyone, I'm new to this group.

I'm looking for birth details of my husband's father, Mocek (Moshe ?) Klinger. We know that he was born in Kuty, Poland around 1905 (that's the place of birth and year of birth he stated on his US immigration form in 1940). It looks like at the time Kuty was austrian territory.

There are a few of records, in polish/galicia and austrian sources, about my husband's grandfather Juda Leib Klinger (father of Mocek Klinger) who was a mill owner in Kuty. The records are mostly business directories from 1906 to 1926. However, we were not able to find any records of marriage for Juda Leib Klinger or birth of Mocek Klinger in Kuty (or any of his siblings).

Where should we look? Lviv jewish births archives? Austrian jewish births archives?

Thank you for any help!

Looking for Klinger, Kuty

I am Ashkenazi Jewish and need a bone marrow transplant to live #announcements Moderator note: Please Read #announcements

deblevstern@...

My name is Debbie Stern and I live in Buffalo, NY. I have Leukemia and am told my best match for a much needed bone marrow transplant would be from another person of Jewish Descent. For now, I am managed on chemo, but we don't know how long it will work for, and the only option for long term survival is a bone marrow transplant. I am asking you to please spread the word that I need any Jewish person between 18-45 to get a cheek swab kit from Ezer Mizion, the world's largest Jewish bone marrow registry, swab your cheek and send it back. You can get kits by writing ryan@... or calling 718-853-8400. There is also an office in Israel.

There are an inordinate number of Jews with bone marrow failure diseases, who need a bone marrow transplant to live., and the world registries are short on potential Jewish donors.  If you are a match for me or another Jewish person, the procedure is similar to giving plasma through the arm...that's usually it! They keep your cheek swab sample for years in case there is someone you match with down the line. It would be an incredible  mitzvah, and you could save a life!
I am asking you to please spread the word, and post this anywhere you can. If you are between 18-45 or know anyone who is, please have them reach out and get a cheek swabbing kit. You might be the one to save my life!
Any questions, feel free to write me at: deblevstern@...
I am very grateful for any help!

Re: Are ship manifests available from departing ports in Europe? #general

David Choukroun

Dear Jeffrey,

Without being 100% sure, I would say that the first step is to check here : http://www.frenchlines.com/en/
Then depending on the name of the ships, you may ask them to search for the ship manifest (I guess this is the list of passengers)

A second step here : https://www.ancestry.fr/search/collections/7488/

Sometimes, you have also some Archives in the port of registration of each ship (Le Havre mainly) - but this would be more about the equipage's names (Captain and others)

otherwise, Ellis Island records that you may already know are most of the time enough to complete a family or dates

hope that helps

Regards
David

It is a long time since you made this post. I hope you found photos and information that you were looking for. I am interested because my great uncle, Moisha Mikhail Friedland, moved from Odessa, I think in the 1910s, to Warsaw in order to set up/ work in a chocolate factory. I wonder if This could be the same chocolate factory. I’d be very interested to know more. I live in UK. He has descendants in Israel and France.

Re: Train travel Ukraine 19th-20th Century/ #ukraine

Regarding train travel between Kolomea and Czernovitz.
Travel from Kolomea was common enough because of the inability of Kolomea to produce enough grain to feed its people.  During the war, the train from Kolomea, by then a significant ghetto, was used to transport Jews to Belzec.

Nacham ZARCHI in Israel #israel

Felissa Lashley

I have come across some old letters that a deceased cousin had that were from Binya ZARCHI formerly ZATULOVSKY in Israel. He mentions a son, Nacham, and some other relatives. Binya must be deceased by now but he mentions having extensive photos and family trees of the family of which my great grandmother Fagga SATLOFF, formerly ZATALOVSKY belongs to. He mentions other names such as a Rabbi Lewis SATLOW, and a Rabbi Eliezer SATLOV as well as a relative that owned a bookshop in New York City, Moshe-Asher SATLOV or ZATOLOVSKY. At the time of the writing of the letters, Binya ZARCHI  lived at Nahalal 16.

I am in need of assistance please to find the ZARCHI family descendants so as to complete my family history. I have so much appreciated the wonderful help to find "missing" relatives before! Thank you all so much.

Bernard Stahl manifest found (and where I went wrong) #general

Sheryl Stahl

Thanks to everyone who sent hints and images for my ggf's manifest.

I realized that in addition to not documenting what I found, that I had put the arrival port as NY in my searches. Instead he went from Hamburg to England; from England to Quebeq; and then apparently traveled over land to get to NY.

So the lesson I learned is NOT to assume they took direct passages to NY.

Thanks again! you all rock!

Are ship manifests available from departing ports in Europe? #general

Jx. Gx.

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to know if ship manifests prepared at departing ports in Antwerp and Le Havre  between 1905 and 1920 are available somewhere online for ships that arrived at Ellis Island.  I'm hoping to match these documents with the manifests I have for my ancestors who arrived at Ellis during that time.

Thank you!
