Song - Why don't they give a Yiddisher Boy a Chance? #unitedkingdom

de.cantor@...

Thanks to a brilliant member here, I now have the words to a Yiddish song sung by my Grandfather.  Stretching the memory again, I have recollections about a song (in English) bemoaning the habit of royalty marrying amongst themselves - instead why don't they give a Yiddisher boy a chance?  Search engine enquiries haven't come up with any results but if anyone knows the words or can find them, that would be marvellous.  The song probably originates in the UK.  Thanks in advance

Re: Jewish birth records from Kuty around 1905 #austria-czech #galicia #ukraine #poland

Svetlana,

You can also find three records mentioning the surname KLINGER and the town Kuty by searching Gesher Galicia's All Galicia Database, at: https://search.geshergalicia.org

If you enter KLINGER in the box for the "Surname", and enter "Kuty" in the box for "Keyword", you will get three results, two of which are property owner records from 1820. The third, though, is a record of the birth in Stanislawow on February 27, 1938 of Saba. She was the daughter of Jakob Moses KLINGER and Anna Chana ABOSCH. The parents had married in Kuty on January 31, 1937.

I don't know whether this record has any connection with your family.

Re: Understanding Russia/Poland #general #russia #poland

Dear Rachel

First of all, Russian-Poland refers to a large part of the Pale of Settlement  that operated under the Tzar for much of the 19th century.

The boundaries of the Russian Empire changed over time. Please refer to the(UK)Times Atlas of European History for maps showing the changes. There are also maps online.

The best way to find out where your ancestor came from is to look at the following records on the UK National Archives website, Ancestry or FindMyPast:

- UK Naturalisation records at the National Archives or on Ancestry. I found these for three out of four sets of my great grandparents, who all naturalised in the 1890s, having been in UK for 30 years.
- Using Census Records. My 4th set of great grandparents were not naturalised but I finally found their place of origin in the 1911 Census (it had not been mentioned in the 1871, 1881, 1891 or 1901 censuses). I also confirmed this through DNA testing with a 3rd cousin in USA who had a detailed paper trail, and information about a change of surname, reverting back to a patronym. This was also confirmed by JRI Poland. All the evidence matched up.

Searching for records of RUSSMAN from Pinsk #belarus #names

S.geller@...

Good day, based upon Canadian military records, Jacob and Ida (nee Karpman or Star) were married on June 21, 1918, in Pinsk Poland, and their son David was born on Dec. 10, 1919, also in Pinsk.  Any actual birth or marriage records would be appreciated, as well as any records of Aron Russman (father of Jacob) or Avraham Karpman (father of Ida) and their relatives.  Also cannot locate any records of passenger lists of them emigrating to Canada (they settled in Montreal, Quebec).

Thank you,

I'm interested in knowing who this researcher is.

Re: greek jews #sephardic

My DNA shows a small amount of Greek background.  I have not figured out the exact ancestor line.  I do know that we are descended from some Spanish/Portuguese who fled the Inquisitions, moving through many countries. I would be interested in having your contact reach out to me.
Thanks for your referral!

French Naturalization #france

Fran Stark-Hundiak

I am hoping someone with experience in French Naturalization can assist.

I have 3 different documents with 3 different dates for my family's Naturalization.

The first one is        Record of the 3rd of September 1899 which lists my great grandfather only. Numéro de décret: Bulletin Nº 3365 Décret Nº 57354

The second one is  Record of the 25th of September 1901 which lists my great grandfather, great grandmother and 4 children, one of whom was born in France.   Numéro de décret: Bulletin Nº 3548   Décret Nº 63216

The third on is        Record of the 9th of December 1901 which lists the 4 children only, including the one born in France.  Numéro de décret: Bulletin Nº 3561 Décret Nº 63580

My questions are: 1) Why are there 3 dates and apparently 3 files?
                              2) Does this mean if I want the files for the Naturalization I need to ask for 3 separate files?
                              3) I live in the USA and I read nor speak French. Would it be best for me to hire a researcher to retrieve these files?

Thank you in advance.

Re: My father seeking neighborhood friends from Bayside, Queens #names #usa

Hi All
Again I apologize for my dad has very little information. What I can assume is that they are my dad's age, which means born about 1943-45. They would be in their middle 70's. I apologize for not mentioning that in my original post. I have tried Facebook, but most people from my dad's generation are computer phobic so I don't think I will have luck with that. I had better luck tracking his army buddies a few years back.

Re: Emigration Routes to London UK 1890s #courland #latvia #russia #poland #general

Hi Carola,

The Hamburg-Hull-Liverpool-USA route was very common. There is a sculpture at Hull railway station that commemorates this.

A Chicago distant cousin of mine made a programme for the BBC's Coast series in 2008, as his ancestor made this trip in 1892.  His ancestor was lucky as it was the last trip out of Hamburg for some months, due to a Cholera outbreak.

Die Judenmatrikel 1824 - 1861 für Oberfranken - look-up request #germany

jlevy2008@...

Hello,

I was wondering whether anybody happens to have the DVD entitled "Die Judenmatrikel 1824 - 1861 für Oberfranken" and would be kind enough to look up the details of the people who adopted the surname OPPENHEIMER in Burgkunstadt.

These Judenmatrikel, like the ones for Unterfranken and Mittelfranken, were created in the course of the implementation of the notorious Bavarian Jews' Edict of 1813. I'm somewhat intrigued that it seemingly took the local government over 10 years to implement the edict.

Thank you so much for your quick response.  I have made an error on the link for number 4.  The correct link is:

This should be information about the death of a child.
Also, I would like the information of the addresses.  I am curious as to where they
lived and how often they moved.

Passage from Jaffa to LeHavre to Ellis Island #courland #latvia #russia

Roberta Lipitz

I have the ship's manifest that left out of Le Havre to Ellis Island July 1903 for My GGF Hersche Shore (together with his daughter/my Grandmother Fannie and a younger daughter. They were detained for LPC (a relative did come forward). He also might  have been questioned as to why he left the United States after having been here 1893-1896 ( I got this information from JewishGen which stated he may have had to leave for financial reasons, a victim of the Financial Panic of 1893-1897).

I realize this seems impossible, but my question is this - how could I go about finding any information of the 1893-1896 trip.  I do know that he originally came from Libau, Lativa, Courland, Russian Empire.

This information is now adding to a very complicated man!

Hi Anita,

On Ancestry I see two WW11 draft cards for Leon and Robert SAUNDERS.  Both say they were born in Troki.

In 1942 they were living in Norfolk, VA.

Harry L. Saunders is listed as closest relative.

Hope this helps,

Hi Elise,

Have you tried searching The Digital Archive of the Cleveland Jewish News?

http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Olive/APA/ClevelandJewishNewsFree/default.aspx?action=tab&tab=search#panel=search

I did a quick search of "Abraham Raphael Family" and got one hit.  You may find more by searching names of individuals.  Perhaps you will get some clues there.
