Harold,

Build your family tree on Family Search's Family Tree site. This LDS collaboartive tree site is totally free and claims it's the largest family tree and still growing.

Pablo Libedinsky

Yefim,
I'm making a bigger effort in researching CHAMUDIS because I think it's an unusual name.   On the other hand, I've been told by Russians I know that LIBEDINSKY is a common surname.
There are many Libedinsky in Argentina. I met one of them who has an extended family tree and I've been trying to find the connection to my family but without success, yet.
My grandfather Paltiel Libedinsky came from somewhere near Odessa.  He migrated to Argentina, where Paltiel became Pablo and from there moved to Chile.

Thank you.
Pablo

INCORRECT:   McKiev bought FTM four years ago and supports it.

Older versions (pre 2017) are not able to sync with Ancestry.

Hi Etienne,

The information you have provided seems to be very helpful. I will give it a try indeed.

I have already contacted the mentioned archive in Brussels and I'm on a progress to reproduce a file regarding a family relative. Do you know if it can be sent by e-mail or just in hard copy?
In addition, I found on FamilySearch an immigration documents from Antwerpen, 1926, that with a careful guess I belive it also related to my family. What databases do you recommend for such documents?

Best regards,
Aviv

Quick Translation from German to English Please #translation

Carol Zinter

Just found this marriage certificate on Ancestry yesterday.  It contains the names of our 3rd great grandparents, Marcus Liebermann and his wife Rosalie Espen.  It also seems to contain the names of each of their parents, who have been unknown to us until now.  Would appreciate a full translation to include any and all names mentioned.  Thank you so very much!!

The husband of Ala Gamulka, who has translated many Yizkor books for JewishGen, has passed away. He was born in Kovel, grew up in Rokitno, and survived the war by hiding out in the forest with his mother.

I came to know Ala because she volunteered her help to translate the now-completed Kovel Yizkor book. Because of her husband's heritage, she did it as "a labor of love."

Researching meaning of surname from Ukraine #ukraine #names

abqsuttle@...

Hello. If anyone has a copy of Alexander Beider's Dictionary of Jewish Surnames from the Russian Empire I would be so grateful if you could search for the name MESCHMAR or MYSHMAR. My father's family was from Odessa, and we have no information earlier than the 1880's. The surname in Hebrew means guardian, jail or guard post. We are curious about in the required selection of a surname, how it came to be that a Hebrew name was chosen, rather than something more secular. If there is a possible meaning in Russian for the name, this might answer the question. All suggestions and thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you Allan for the thorough and entertaining information. One more question: is there an index of NYC Death Certificates for the years 1949-1968 (or any sub-period within that time frame)? Thanks in advance.

Sherri,
No, their mother was dead, and the father could not come to US, was already sent back in 1923 before they were born for a heart murmur.  I am hoping to find a marriage record, then maybe I can trace them.  I did a quick check on that and nothing turned up, but I will keep at it.

Thanks to all for the leads. It seems access to NYC DCs from 1949-1968 is in the courts since 2019. I just donated $25 to the cause. This is a travesty for NYC which is way behind the rest of NY State and many other states on this issue. I wonder if under the current regulations the Health Department would release to me a DC for my 3rd cousin, once removed who died in 1949? This event occurred 71 years ago. Ah well, on to more fruitful pastures..

I think there is confusion in that many MyHeritage trees were entered in Hebrew and thus it presents them as entered. It does not change any local settings.

Thank you, Rollie.  That is especially interesting because she also lived in the 17th century, and from the surname Weber I would guess it was the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

Geni is owned by My Heritage. My Heritage is owned by an Israeli company.

Geni is for those researchers who admire the concept of a World Tree of all people who have a name. Many comments above speak to duplicates. On Geni there are no duplicates. One person, one record, one set of relatives. If you add a person that is already on Geni you will get a duplication message and a request for a Merge.

Geni is also integrated with GedMatch.

Another benefit I have found from using geni, MyHeritage and Ancestry are photos. Many times an individual’s  photo will appear on only one of the sites.
